Second biopsy

Hi everyone, I’m hoping one of you kind people can calm me down !

I had a routine mammogram a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday morning I opened a letter asking me to go to the Breast Assessment Centre at 10 o’clock. It’s over an hours drive so I set off straight away - on my own .

I was seen straight away so had no time to worry, had another mammogram then an ultra sound with Radiologist who told me I had a small area of micrcalcifaction (which can sometimes be a sign of early cancer ) and a very small mass of some kind in the same area. She spent a long time looking and said there was no sign  of anything in my lymph nodes - which was good.

I then had another more detailed mammogram, an X-ray, some core biopsies (3, I think ) and she left in 2 titanium markers. I then signed a consent form for a Mammophone Biopsy so that she could remove all the microcalcification . I was going to have it then, but when they came back in they asked if I could come back the next day at 12 instead - as I’d  come on my own and they were worried about me driving myself home. They want someone to come with me. I couldn’t do today because of work and because I’d have to find someone to drive me.

I now have to wait a week because they had no other slots available and I am really worried.

I couldn’t get hold of them today .

Is it normal to be told you have to have someone with you for a mammophome biopsy and/or that you shouldn’t drive?

I’m also worrried that she left markers in - having spent so long looking.

Any information/ advice would be very welcome - there’s only much I can in this heat to keep busy !

Thanks

  • Hi I had all this done and I was on my own, but to be fair I didn't know this was going to happen.

I don't drive, but I'm guessing it could be to do with the discomfort and your mental state.

Not everyone copes the same, and are perhaps thinking of your safety.

Good luck sending big squishy Scottish hugs

  • I had someone with me and was glad as i needed a bandage aftery biopsy so wouldn’t have been able to drive for 24 hours . Some people bleed more than others and was a slightly bigger procedure than I expected .. I can see it as wise advice .. also it’s always good to have mental support if possible

  • Thank you. I felt pretty calm throughout most of it but at the end my head was spinning and When I got in I ended up googling things that got me very stressed.

I hope everything has gone well for you.

    Thanks again

  • Hi Jo, I hope that you don’t have to wait too long for your appointment.  Late this afternoon I have an urgent breast referral at my local hospital after finding an enlarged lymph node in my armpit.  I am terrified and the thought of having to go back for further tests after today, well, I will completely go to pieces.  Wishing the very best for your second biopsy.

I am going back on Wed 31st .

The very best of luck this afternoon.

  • Hi Jo, well my tests were surprising.  Saw the surgeon, he was very nice, had the mammograms, then saw another doctor for the ultra sound.  The enlarged lymph node in the right  armpit looked harmless as was the breast.  However the left breast showed some benign calcification in one area and in another  area, that needs a needle biopsy.  He said on a scale from 1 to 5, 1 and 2 nothing to worry about, 3 needs further investigation and 4-5 probably cancer.  Mine is 3.  I am going back for the biopsy Wed 31st the same as you!  He said  a one week wait for results.  Hopefully it will be ok and I should be grateful that the innocent lymph node on the other side brought me to the hospital in the first place if it is not.  We seem to have the same symptoms but you are couple of weeks ahead of me.  I will be thinking of you and wishing the very best on Wednesday.

  • Hi Lyn

I think I was also told I was a 3 - I had completely forgotten that until I read your reply and it made me feel a bit better. I managed to get my appointment moved to lunchtime time today as my partner was also asked to come in for his op on Wednesday and I have to take him.

i have been away this weekend with friends - it was lovely and just what I needed. I’m feeling very nervous now though even though I don’t think I’ll get any results today.

    sending you positive thoughts !

  • Hi Jo I’m glad you had a lovely weekend and got some relief from all the worry.  I don’t suppose that you will here anything today but I will be thinking of you and I hope that you do not have too much discomfort during and after the procedure.  Do let me know how you get on

  • Hi Jo, I had my needle biopsies this morning, same day as your procedure. Everyone was very nice and it wasn't too bad.  I have to go back next Thursday, another weeks wait!
