I'm a 42 year old male who was referred just over a year ago on an urgent referral for quite heavy rectal bleeding coupled with constant cramping pain in my right side.
I had a quick flexi signoidoscopy which was clear and was told I the bleeding was from haemorrhoids. Ihave since had 3 banding attempts over the last year, none of which have stopped the bleeding which is quite constant and heavy i.e. large dark red blood clots and dark red toilet water, sometimes the bleeding doesn't stop for 20 minutes.
Over the year initally my iron levels dropped (ferritin) and in February I was put on ferrous fumerate tablets. I had a FBC done in June and I am now anaemic despite taking iron daily.
Had an appointment with my consultant yesterday, who has previously quickly dismissed any concerns I've had
This time though he came into the room not making eye contact and quickly suggested that he needs to perform an urgent colonscopy to make sure he hasn't missed anything sinister.
His reason was that it is very unusual to become anaemic from haemorrhoids (although not impossible).
His demeanour and the constant pain I have in my right side have now got me extremely worried and I was was wondering if anyone else has been at this stage who could reassure me a little?
