Swollen tonsil

Hi,

i have had one swollen tonsil now for around 2/3 days however there is no pain at all. It happened straight after I was eating dinner, I suddenly felt as if there was food in my tonsil but when I looked in the mirror there was nothing there. However when I looked the next day I saw that there’s a slight yellowish vein, a subtle white patch and the tonsil just looked red and sore, but as previously mentioned it doesn’t feel sore at all. I searched what it could be and all that came up was strep throat but I didn’t have most of those other symptoms such as a fever, sore throat, head ache etc, just the funny looking tonsil. I’ve tried to book an appointment with the gp however they can’t see me until next Monday however I’ll be in holiday by then. Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be or what I should do? Should I still go on holiday?

Thank you :)

  • Not a Dr but I get tonsil issues a lot and am going to get mine removed. Sounds like its most likely strep or tonsil stones. It could also be an abscess or ulcer. If you develop a fever then probably strep. I'd go to your gp if it's still swollen after a few more days. You could even try and book in to see a nurse at your local walk in centre if you're worried about being unwell on your holiday. They sometimes have more appointments. If it continues to grow you can see your urgent gp. If the tonsil swells to the point where it's impacting your breathing or you're dribbling and unable to swallow, go to A&E. I had to go to hospital when I got EBV and couldn't breathe

  • Hi if it happend to me i i wou go to a/e if you go to gp they take swabs then they send them off then you wait .at least they have the equipment to test straight away sounds like an infection to me but thats what i do its a wait i know but in the long run its much quicker especialy if your going on hols you dont want to get there a start searching for a dr . Where i live theres an urgent care dept if its out of hours you ring gp surgery and it transfers your call then someone takes your details etc then they give you an apointment and you go in and see there drs its great because its quick your earea may have it or not just ring your gp after 6pm and before 8am see if it puts you through hope you get sorted paul
