Can I ask for further investigation?

I have been to the breast clinic twice regarding a lump I've had for a few years. I was always too scared to get it checked out and eventually got up the courage. It has grew larger in that time and has got harder.

They only done a physical examination back in January and told me to come back in a few months just to check it again. I was there a couple of weeks ago and they only done a physical examination again. They said it feels like a nodule and they don't want to investigate further. They basically dismissed it once I said I'd had it for years and been through 2 pregnancies, the woman said oh well, if it was cancer you'd have known all about it by now. She also said it's nothing 'because of my age' (I'm 26). I know this is pretty much crap because I know it's uncommon but people can have slow moving tumours and cancer doesn't choose based on age.

I feel like they're not really feeling properly in the area where the lump is. Both appointments I've had have also been just before my period started and my breasts are really swollen so you have to dig slightly harder to feel and they won't do that. The rest of the month it's right under the surface of the skin and feels solid. My whole right breast feels harder than the left, as though there is is some solidness under the skin (I don't know how to explain). I also get pain under my right arm and it feels swollen sometimes. I told them that too and they said that's nothing.

I have really bad anxiety and I've had PND since having my 9 month old. It took so much for me to finally get this checked and while I know it's unlikely to be cancer, I don't feel like my mind has been put at rest by a physical examination that the GP already done. The GP said the lump felt hard and irregular, which it does. I thought I'd at least have had an ultrasound/mammogram and that would have put my mind at rest more than just getting it felt.

Am I expecting too much? Is there anyway I could ask for further testing or would they refuse? They gave me a card with a number to call if anything changes so I don't have to go through the GP again. Am I able to go private just for an ultrasound?

There isn't a history of breast cancer as far as I know, I think an aunt on my dad's side. There is a history of cervical and ovarian cancer on my mum's side with quite a lot of the women having it.

Sorry for rambling on and thanks in advance x

  • Hi there ..

Well I'd deff get it checked and tell your G P you want to be refured to breast clinic for more tests .. they are right is is really rare in someone so young but not impossible... if you were older you'd have been sent for tests ... so it's ageism really ...

Yes you may have p m d ... but that will only get worse if they leave it .. years ago when I was having trouble with heavy periods my Dr was doing the same .. I knew it wasn't right .. so I saved and went private for tests .. it turned out I had pollips that were making the periods heavy and made me iron deficient too .. my Drs then took notice and I ended up having a hysterectomy... sorted ...

You could be fine .. I've had one lump that's been there for years and it's fine .. I also had 4 call backs from mamorgrams that were all o.k ... this last one was cancer .. so I know most lumps are benign... but better scented to make sure .. then you can really hopefully put your mind at ease ...

Let us know how you go .. Chrissie x

  • Do you think I'd still have to go through the GP when they gave me a number to call? I just don't think they'd agree to more tests when the doctor that's felt it both times doesn't think it's anything. It's just so hard to put my mind at rest when it's something I've been worried about and I haven't had any proper tests to confirm.

The lump is in my right breast and I've had a lot of issues with my liver the past year as well. I had a scan when I was pregnant because my liver function tests were really high but they couldn't see all the liver because it was squashed into my rib cage due to pregnancy. They said they may want to do a follow up scan later to check the rest but then said they'll just leave it, even though I'm still having right upper quadrant pain and my blood tests have still been off. I'm scared there may be some connection but they just said it's unlikely.

I'm considering saving for some private tests if they refuse to check it out.

I'm glad you went private and got things sorted. I hope you're doing ok now.

    Thanks for replying x

  • Totally agree with our chriss. Go back to your gp.....it's highly unlikely to be sinister but without proper checks ( i.e...just feeling isn't acceptable) how could they possibly tell?

    Let us know? Xx

  • I'm definitely going to try, I'm just worried they won't do any more checks. My husband thinks I'm just being paranoid but I just don't feel reassured with only getting the lump felt.

I'll update with what happens xx

  • I don't think you're being paranoid, when you get to see your gp ask them if they can give you 100% guarantee that the lump isn't sinister?

Hope you get taken seriously love xxx
