Random fevers, really worried

I have got myself worried sick from googling too much! (I have chronic health anxiety)

About 2 months ago I would randomly wake at night feeling shaky, nearly like I was too hot/cold at the same time. It was weird but only happened randomly so I never thought too much of it.

2 weeks ago I woke hot and sweaty and my temp was 38.2. I went to the doctor and she said my tonsils were swollen with puss on them and I def had tonsillitis (even though I had no throat pain) she put me on antibiotics. She took bloods and a throat swab. Bloods were normal and the swab was clear. Since then I dont see any puss on my throat and dont have any other symptoms apart from I keep getting random low grade fevers! I seem to go a few days with no fever then it comes back again, it makes me feel so uncomfortable and keeps me awake at night.

Of course google has scared me silly! I cant see a doctor for a few days and I'm trying to keep it together but its hard. Im currently on holiday with my kids and this is all I can think of. Everything I read online points to random fevers being a really bad sign. Has anyone experienced this? Im so scared :(

  • Do you have any other symtoms? I have fevers after doing little walking of 10 mins or housework of 39 sometimes 40 and when resting mostly 38 or 38.5. The only restbite i get is the mornings. My fever goes up throughout the day and seem to suffer in the night. I have excessive sweating due to the fevers. All my bloods are normal except slightly raised blood count and immflamatory markers were slightly raised not enough to indicate infection. Ive had urine cultures which negative. I feel tired constantly and i recently had a episode of chest pain which came on suddenly lasted about 10 mins. I have shooting pains in the neck and under arm on left side but no lumps tp be felt. I have had left sided flank pain since october thats where it all started. I had a week where i itched every where but after antihitamines i only itch on my neck all over now. No rash. Ive lost a dress size amd a half since october. Ive been by heamtology consultant who dismissed me because bloods were 'normal'. GP feels i am showing b symtoms of lymphoma. Hope it all gets sorted. I know this is scary but it could just be from the infection. It can stay in the system for a few weeks. Keep an eye on it. If you are getting ill more often and taking longer to get over the illness go to GP.

  • I dont have any other symptoms apart from the fever. I supposidly had tonsillitis 2 weeks ago even though my throat wasnt sore at all! I think the glands in my neck are up too. Im travelling home from holiday today and hope to get in with the doctor tomorrow! Are you checking your temperature constantly? I cant help but check mine all the time! Do you always have a temp or does it sometimes be normal? Mine was normal for a few days and now its up again. I feel drained constantly and nausous. Its stopping me sleeping as I wake up every hour feeling hot and sweaty. You must be going crazy with worry too! Are you managing to hold it together? Im really struggling :(

  • I am glad she isnt concerned at the minute, I just hope these fevers go away! She said to stop checking my temperature so often! Im checking it constantly, its become a bit obsessive. She said just to check it if I wake up at night hot and sweaty. Bloods tomorrow aswell, hopefully they'll be okay

  • Hi thats good shes not worried so you should stop worrying but i i  understand its not easy as it stuck in your brain all panick attacks or anxiaty attacks are slightly diffrent . But sounds exactly what went through if you wake up with the sweats remember its your body out of wack telling you your in danger so its setting all your functions to either run or fight its one our defence mechanisms and it can be very scary even for the strongest of us .next you wake up with sweats hold yourself together just sit there and say ime ok its a panick attack it cant hurt me eventualy they will tapper of and you will be rid of the dam things you cant say what does he know because i do as ive been through it so i understand and dont let anyone say pull yourself together because its not easy i thinks your docs doing the bloods just to be sure for you . Its only way to check for high white blood sell count as your body releases them to kill infections there the bodygaurds of our bods lol .regards paul

  • Yeh anxiety sucks. I will have to try and get it under control. When I wake up sweating its because I have a temperature though, its nothing to do with me panicking. My temp rises and that wakes me up then I take my temp and ive a fever

  • Ok but anxiaty causes heart to speed up and vains to narrow causing vascodialation a raise in body temp then body sweats to cool down . This is isnt me talking this is a quote from a medical journal . P ps this diagnosis of your poor mums not going to help either it would stree anyone out  when my liz was diagnosed wow did it effect me but being her rock i had to hold myself togetter for her sake but my goodness everything went south inside if the blood tests show no infection then it should start to bring the anxiaty down its all about heal yourself or live with anxiaty for the rest of your life not a pleasant prospect i i couldnt beleive anxiaty could affect me so much but it does so i read  up pages on pages about it and got rid of it can make you feel like heart bowle kidneys urine you name it does it . Just go onto googel and put in does anxiaty raise body temp its all about convincing yourself . P

  • Thanks for your reply Paul. I agree on how much anxiety can cause, im waiting to see a cardiologist because an ecg showed I have rapid heartbeat (tachycardia). Unsure if this means I have an actual heart problem or if its from my anxiety. But, on the other side, I dont want the doctor not to investigate something because I have anxiety and maybe miss a potential health problem. Ive read some cases of psychosomatic fevers but it seems pretty rare enough. I just dont want to assume its anxiety, iv had some crazy anx symptoms over the years but a fever has never been one of them. Fever usually means the body is fighting something and if that infection isnt obvious then it concerns me as to what it might be :(

  • Definatly get it checked i had arithmia missing a heart beat now and again they put a heart moniter on 4 24 hours handed it back in then they sent for me to do a treadmill test where they stick sencers from a cardio mashine and as i i walk they raised more and more so you were walking up hill and measured heart rate  the imbalace stopped under load so cardiologist said it was ok  well i hope you get sorted one way or another regards .paul

    Hi Smoores,

I'm glad that you got to see your GP today and that she didn't seem too worried. It's good news that your throat has healed and that she is following up with your bloods tomorrow.

I'm happy to hear that she hasn't dismissed you, but left the door open if you continue to have the same symptoms.

You should get your blood results through quite soon.

I sincerely hope that they don't throw up something untoward. Fingers crossed!

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks Jolamine, woke up hot and sweaty last night and my temp was 37.8 :(

  • Im really getting anxious about these fevers again. They just wont go away and the longer this goes on the more convinced I am it must be sinister. I feel sick with worry. Last night was the worst, I had a fever and woke up with cold chills, shaking  badly. I also have a rash that comes and goes on my stomach.

How is everyone else? Anyone else reading this with similar symptoms? I cant shake how scared I am right now, I have chronic health anxiety and feel like I'm falling apart. I cant stop crying :(

    Hi Smoore,

You might find it helpful to take a photo of your rash to show your GP.

It might also be useful to keep a diary of when these bouts occur and what your temperature is at these times. It doesn’t sound as if you are reaching high temperatures, which is good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
