Help? Feel like giving up!

I started having constant diarrhoea about september time. I didnt think much of it as a lot was going on with my partner having a bad motorbike accident and then he had kidney cancer. Anyway, went to GP when I started noticing blood.... they checked for piles etc. More weeks of me pestering and they referred me for a colonoscopy. They changed their minds and did a flexible sigmoidoscopy. All clear. Biopsies clear. They took a stool sample which TMI ALERT was just blood and mucus but the doctor called today and said it's normal. Bloods are normal. I'm a bigger girl but have lost a couple stone in the last couple months. I sleep at least 16 hours a day and I feel so washed out. I struggle to eat as I have no appetite any more. Now the frequency of my visits to the loo are more and there's blood most times. I have told my GP who has given me Colpermin‍♀️

My question after that is.... can I safely assume it's nothing sinister? Is this just my lot in life now? I'm so frustrated and so sick of being well, sick.

  • Hi,

My name's Richard. I have a lot of experience as an Endoscopy Nurse and would like to offer some help.

Colpermin is generally used for the relief of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms. IBS is a functional disorder of the bowel, that is to say that the bowel is still healthy but the function of the bowel itself is affected. IBS doesn't cause bleeding. You can find out more about iritable bowel syndrome here

I am concerned that you say your symptoms are getting worse and that you are sleeping for 16 hours a day and feel washed out (especially as you mention no other medical condition etc. that may cause this).

I think it would be useful to get back in touch with your GP and explain that your symptoms are getting worse as opposed to better and that you are sleeping for 16 hours a day and feel washed out. If they don't take your concerns seriously, ask for a second opinion.

Without wanting to throw around diagnoses, because that's not what I'm trained to do, I have also linked some information about inflammatory bowel disease here. These are bowel conditions that can cause bleeding.

Best wishes and I hope you feel much better soon.

  • I have no other conditions that would cause the sleepiness and exhaustion. Only other (weird and almost certainly not related) 'things' that have changed.... I have a terribly sore mouth, dry and ulcers and wicked heartburn. I think I will take your advice and ask for a 2nd opinion as I've told them its getting worse but am being fobbed off x

  • Interesting... while it could be unrealted, mouth ulcers can occur in people with Crohn's disease (one of the types of inflammatory bowel disease).

Crohn's can affect any part of the digestive system (from mouth to anus) unlike ulcerative colitis which only affects the large bowel (or colon). Indeed, sometimes Crohn's doesn't affect the large bowel at all.

This is definitely worth mentioning to your GP too.

Hope you get the answers you very much need.
