Urgent referral to ENT 1 enlarged tonsil

41 year old female ex smoker doesnt drink

I have have 1 swollen tonsil(right side) since 2nd June, throat always felt dry and felt like something was stuck in my throat no pain .

Went to drs mid June and was given 10 day course of antibiotics for suspected strep troat and nothing has change for the good, I have since developed ear discomfort same side and a feeling of fullness/heaviness in both the ear and throat along with aching feeling,

Been back to drs yesterday as I'm finding my symptoms distressing and its causing me anxiety,dr could see no change to tonsil and discovered a lymph node is up under my jaw same side.the ear itself is clear and the ear drum could be seen,

I'm now waiting for urgent referral from ENT within 2 weeks to rule out cancer,I'm terrified

I done the worse thing possible and googled my symptoms .

Could this just be allergies??? Dr did say something about tonsil polyp??.

Just want some peace of mind

  • Hi Kels,

Welcome to the forum although I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with the health concern at the moment. It's understandable that you're feeling terrified at the moment.

We have quite a number of members here on the forum who have been in your position and I can see that you've been chatting with a couple of them. I'm tagging one of our lovely ladies, [@RadioactiveRaz]‍ into this post in the hope that she'll see it and reply with a few words of wisdom. :)

Please try not to Google your symptoms. It won't give you any firm answers and only cause you to worry. Try to take each day at a time and keep busy between now and your appointment.

If you think it would help for you to talk to one of our team of nurses then do give them a call. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Kels and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Kels like Jen says please please keep, off dr Google. It’s automatic now in the n h s once you reach the main Alicante age of 40 the quickest way to be seen .like my dr said around 99% of urgent refferals are to rule  out  cancer not rule it in In my case lasypt May i was the 1% and tonsil cancer is 97% a male cancer especially if h p v 16+ positive which I was. So statistically I would have had more chance in winning the lottery so don’t worry. If yiu are like me there’s plenty of us on here to help.  But again if any consolation most if us on here with is haven’t had any pain just a swollen lymph node in the clavicle ie college bone area.

Plus my oncologist said to me don’t please google as if iPhone did he could diagnose himself dead within minutes too many untried facts on the internet.

    Keep in touch

  • Hi hazel and thank you,

    I'm sorry for late response,

I'm also currently dealing with my dad dying of esophageal cancer he's now receiving palliative care and it's looking like only days left,

my anxieties have been through the roof and I have now received my urgent referral appointment which is today at 2:30 needless to say my symptoms seem to be 10 times worse today than any other as it did all seem to subside for a few days but could be that my mind was taken off of it while dealing with dad so I'm sure a lot of it is down to my anxieties and what my dad is currently going through,

I think I may need to seek some kind of help for my health anxiety as the older I'm getting the worse it seems.

I just want to enjoy life and live it not just exist!

    Kels xx

  • Hi Kels

do sorry about your dad  my dad died with lung cancer n mum bowel cancer so I can relate to how you are feeling especially towards the end of life care.

Let me know how your referral went msrnding hugs hazel x

  • Hello hazel,

ENT went well by all accounts the doctor had a look at both tonsils  looking in the mouth around the mouth checked for glands in the neck jaw head and found no problem, he did say that because the sensation is accompanied with ear discomfort that he wants to do a CT scan and I will get the appointment in the post.

My symptoms I'm normally always there occasionally I can forget about them but yet again I woke up this morning with a feeling that something about the size of a golf ball stuck in the side of my throat I can feel the pressure if I have my arm upnear my neck when laying in bed putting pressure probably on glands I can feel a difference even when turning my head left to right I could feel that just turning it to the right puts pressure inside my throat this to stop.

    Now for another waiting game

  • Hi Kels

sounds positive to me I had no pain no throat problems at all just an enlarged lymph node which really didn’t think anything amiss. Just s thought my sister in law had something very similar and hers turned out to be silent reflux brought on by stress her mum my mum in law was dying of lung Cancer at the time she used to say a permanent feeling of a lump in her throat n earache ? Now on 40 mg of omaprozole sorted her. Not s medical opinion obv just passing a thought on

    sending hugs to your fsmily
