Rushed through breast clinic

I'm just looking for some advice about where to go from here (if anywhere...)

I found a small discolouration on my breast around 8 weeks ago, after recognising this and looking properly at my breasts for (admittedly) the first time I noticed what looked like 'orange peel skin' that only occurred when I pulled the skin back - I've lost 2 stone recently so there's more skin there than normal! I wasn't worried but booked an appointment with the GP just in case. The GP told me that he wasn't concerned but would refer me to the breast clinic anyway, just n case. The nurse who was in the room also reminded me to lift my arms when self-examining from now on.

I went away without worry and glad that I had been referred. I then spent the next 6 weeks googling and becoming worried (as you do) and then I lifted my arms to self-examine and realised that there was a dimple on the same breast I was concerned about. After reading some stories of people whose first sign of cancer was a dimple, I was suddenly very glad I was going to the breast clinic.

I arrived 40 minutes early and was taken to see the doctor 35mins before my appointment was actually due. He asked me to explain why I was there and I did. "It all began with what looked like a spot..." as I was talking I realised he was paying less attention as he talked over me when I mentioned the dimple. During the examination (which lasted 30seconds at most) he guided me to feel what he described as a 'pimple' on my breast and I agreed that was normal. He said he wasn't worried and that I could now go home as he washed his hands. He asked if I had any questions before he left, I was angry at this point feeling like I had been treated like a silly girl who was worried about nothing. I said "What about the dimple?" He replied "I'm not worried." And then left.

Looking back on it, I feel I was rushed through and am worried that he thought I said 'pimple' instead of 'dimple'. Do I leave it and trust the professional? Do I contact my GP? I'm 28 so not eligible for breast screening. Any suggestions? Also if you made it all the way down to here, thank you for reading my novel!!

  • Hi there - if I were you I'd trust the Consultant - he's the expert not you so why not just believe him? You say you've never examined your breasts before so you don't know what's 'normal' for you. This probably is perfectly normal.

Googling, I'm sorry to say, is a silly thing to do. You can easily find you can have all kinds of weired & wonderful symptoms about all kinds of illnesses which just don't exist. Moreover, a lot of the stuff on Google is outdated rubbish & anything medical you read can easily be misunderstood by people like you & me who aren't doctors!! Stop doing it! ;);););)

Get on with keeping busy with your normal life. Hope this helps.:):)

  • Personally I would go back to my GP explain what happened and see what they say. I went with breast pain, got referred, saw a consultant and he said he couldn’t see/feel anything but he would refer me for a mammogram anyway.

You will drive yourself crazy if you don’t go back and discuss it with your GP.

    good luck.
