Waiting for colonoscopy and scared

Hello all,

I'm 36/female and have been having abdominal pain since February. It started on the left side and it's now on the right one too. I have gone from 66kg to 58kg and my bowel movements changed - more loose and more often. I also have back pain, left hip & groin pain and nerve like pain in my legs.

GP wasnt concerned but has done CBC, CRP and stool sample to check calprotectin level, all came back fine. I then had a CT scan which didn't show anything in the abdomen but revealed a 6mm nodule in my lung which will be re-scanned in 3 months time. I also had MRI of the spine and neck, the results were back pretty quickly but I'm awaiting an appointment to discuss them. I am now also awaiting colonoscopy.

In the meantime I was referred under 2 weeks to a breast clinic as found a lump in my breast. This came back clear fortunately.

I know everyone has to wait and everyone gets stressed about tests and results but I am feeling very down at the moment.  I have two small children and sometimes I fell so unwell and struggle to look after them and enjoy my time with them. Every doctors appointment was a battle to get any tests done due to my age. So I'm also exhausted mentally.

I know the likelihood of having bowel cancer at my age is low and I was doing ok until that nodule was found on the lung. Now I don't only worry I might have bowel cancer but also that it has already spread.

Any advice how to deal with this horrible wait and anxiety?

Thanks.

  • Hi how did it go for you,? Please let me know , im waiting for colonoscopy and im scared

  • Hi A.B, I hope you are well and all at your end.

Did you get results for your biopsies for the colonoscopy?

I have similar symptoms to your self with abdominal pains which started on the left side and now on the right side too. I too get back pain and nerve like pain on my legs at times.

If I may ask what sort of pain was the one that you were getting on your sides?

I have a colonoscopy coming up and I am very scared as well due to reading the horror stories of painful procedures even with sedation and gas and air which had to be terminated.

I am feeling very low too and losing weight........

Also you mention CRP test what is that please?

I wish you all the best, lots of love

  • Hi Cutiee4.

The results of my colonoscopy were fine! I didnt have any sedation and opted for gas & air only. It was absolutely fine. It was painful a couple of times but the pain only lasted a few seconds and the gas helped a lot. They were talking to me all the time and it was over very quickly.

I am now awaiting endoscopy and am considering sedation. Will probably decide on the day if I want it or not.

As for the pain it was sort of in the middle between my hip and the lower rib. It was constant and sharp and hurt when I pressed that area. It lasted a good year and it's gone now and they didn't find any reason for it. It does come back occasionally but its rare now. I am going to have an endoscopy because I'm having stomach problems and pain there now.

CRP is a test which might indicate inflammation/infection within the body.

Don't read those horror stories about colonoscopies. People don't usually go online and comment if they've had a good experience so you will mainly find negative stories. It wasn't bad honestly, gas and air helps you relax if you decide to go with that.

Let me know if you have any more questions. I'm happy to help as I know how worrying it is when you don't know what's happening to your body.

All the best to you xx

  • Hi A.B, thank you so much for your reply,  I wasn't sure if you would reply as I think you had not logged in since a long time so thank you for replying I appreciate.

I am so happy that your colonoscopy biopsies came back normal. And also the test was not painful.

I have read on threads here about painful terminated colonoscopies where patients had been sedated and took gas and air as well who said they found it too painful

    Take Care

I cannot take pain at all! I have not given birth, never had an operation luckily not had drips put in to me. The Covid test brought me into tears as well.

So I am fearing this alot and what if I move about and get a perforation

I am getting the same sort of pains which started on my left side I get them on the right side too at times and sometimes across my stomach. I feel it also when I move and when I breath at times. I feel as as if there is something stabbing me there but when I try and feel it, I cannot feel anything. My pains are also constant.

Have you got a date for your endoscopy? I wish you all the luck with that too.

I did Google CRP, thank you for telling me about it. I will try and get the GP to request it for me. I don't think they have done it for me. I only found out about it reading your post.

  • Hi again A.B, I hope you are well and all at your end

If I may ask, what were the results of the MRI for the spine?

And how is the nodule in your lungs?

Its lucky you are managing to get certain tests done. It's really difficult with GP's even more so now due to Covid.

I only got the Colonoscopy as I went to A&E. That too I was referred for a Sigmoidoscopy however as my maternal aunt passed away with Bowel Cancer I thought its maybe better to have a Colonoscopy done where they look at the whole bowel as opposed to only the Sigmoid Colon.

Because if incase they saw something in the Sigmoid Colon they would refer for a Colonoscopy anyways so why not get it done once.

However after reading some of the stories on this site, I am very very worried. They cannot be lieng can they?

A couple of people said they had bowel stool tests done which came back normal however when they had the colonoscopy done it showed they have bowel cancer

There is the risk of perforation of the intestine and tears/cuts also if they remove any polyps or take any biopsies.

My anxiety levels are over the roof, I really don't know what to do.

They are not keen to do this examination on General Anaesthetic as well.

The Covid Test made me in tears as well....... I cannot take any pain at all

Never given birth never had an operation luckily, never had any drips or cannula fitted on me.

If I may ask please what stomach issues are you having now?

I already thought this too that I may have to go for an endoscopy as well.

I have been going through few health issues from December as well.

  • Hi Cutiee4,

I don't have the date yet for the endoscopy and I doubt it will be this year!

My spine MRI came back with some findings like a bulging disk and some other degenerative changes. They also found a large nodule on my thyroid which gave me many sleepless nights. It was meant to be monitored but covid happened. So it's been left.

Same with the nodule on my lung. Just left as its small and they won't even monitor it.

My sister had a very painful colonoscopy so I know these horrible stories are real but I would say majority of people are fine. And it's so worth doing it, the risk of anything happening is so small and you can gain so much. I think it's very important to manage the anxiety as stress can make it more painful. Gas & air helps with it. Honestly the 24h period prior to the procedure where you can't eat was much worse than the actual colonoscopy. And I heard many people saying the same.

As for the stomach issues I have pain under the lower left rib like a stabbing pain and also where the breastbone ends. I tested positive for helicobacter pyroli so they suggested endoscopy.

I'm 38 and have more health problems than my parents lol. I've never had any diagnosis though so I don't even know what they are which is giving me anxiety.

Yes I agree that GPs are not quick to offer tests but I lost 10kg in a few months so I think this made them want to look into it for me.

Maybe speak with your GP about managing your anxiety and fear as it's probably affecting your life in a negative way. I know it did with me.

Sending you lots of love and feel free to message me if you feel like it xx

  • Hope this eases some people of their anxiety. I had severe lower abdominal pain left side, loose bloody stool (a lot of blood), fatigue ct scan showed some structural abnormalities (due to unprepared bowel in hindsight) and I had loss of appetite I was referred to a colonoscopy scan which I dreaded and cancelled the first appointment however the bleeding and pain continued for 3 weeks and decided I would have the 2nd colonoscopy appointment regardless of anxiety. I am glad I did as it showed a healthy bowel no polips and no other structural abnormalities with just 2 grade 1 internal piles at the cave entrance. I needed to drive so opted for just entinox the procedure was copeable not as bad as what I read people describing with just a few short lived moments of cramp type pain as they inflate the bowel (they really are short lived so don't panic) the nurses were fantastic at easing the anxiety and distracting me whenever they noticed discomfort in my face and the entinox kind of makes you not bothered about it anyway although it does make you temporarily talk rubbish and giggle which is pleasant by the way and watching the screen really helped even though I didn't think it would it's quite hypnotic and fascinating they take a few biopsy samples which is standard procedure and you feel no pain maybe a light finger prodding type sensation. Honestly the worst part of the whole thing was google searches, the fasting, my own health anxiety and unfounded apprehension of the procedure. Also I've had a few endoscopy scans and other than a bit of gagging initially it isn't painful at all and is over with before you realise. And don't worry if they find anything 9/10 it's benign polip/s, pile/s , or ulcer/s and sorted during the procedure and extremely curable if not and found in early stages. Don't let google and anxiety ruin your well-being.  Symptoms put downs to bleeding piles, food intolerances and IBS. Oh don't forget to do a few massive farts after the procedure to get rid of the bloating and cramps it's normal to feel a bit tender afterwards due to trapped wind and prodding about and it's normal to bleed a bit too so don't freak out. If you need sedation to relax take it but it was not needed for me the nurses and entinox took care of that for me. Enjoy the hot buttered toast and cuppa afterwards it's the best you'll ever taste after fasting. In a nutshell it's not as bad as the dentist!

  • I know this was a while ago molla but just wondering how you got on? hope all is ok.

  • Hi Pinkystar

I had an email saying that someone asking me how I went on,  but i forget my pass and things , so I add 1 to my username just to get in , so I made "molla1" sorry just to explain, okay then , I went ahead with colonoscopy , I was almost going private as i was petrifiyed but Dr booked already so went and do it on NHS , it come all clear , nothing there , i didnt feel anything because I was put on drugs , I woke up to tell me that all clear , I was shoked , couldnt believe it , I had some preparation before that, I drink some thing to clead the colon, was okay, I was so soooo scared that now I have health anxiety , if anytbing hurt , i go into stupid conclusions , its unbelivable , if my finger hurt I vould think the worst , since the panic of colon c fear , Now I think sometimes why I let myself go to that state , I just used to search google all day non stop

    thanks God all clear
