Neck Lump(s) - Not always Cancer

I had a pea sized, painless lump on my neck, and I had other lumps come up and I was so scared, I was sure I had lymphoma. The Doctor said they were swollen lymph nodes and I've had the biggest one for over 2 months with mild abdominal pain and reduced appetite. I remember trawling through this forum looking for information desperately trying to find someone who had a neck lump and got a good result. I also googled my symptoms non-stop and terrified myself.

Today I had an ultrasound and I was so scared I was tearing up in the waiting room. After I had it the doctor said they didn't look suspect!! Then I had a follow up ENT appointment and he said he wasn't worried about them and they're quite common and they don't always go down. I'm still a bit worried but my mind is at ease. I told myself if I got the all clear I would post on here incase someone is going through the same thing I did. If you have a neck lump, definitely push to get it checked out properly just in case, but don't fret because its rare to have a cancer like lymphoma. It's more likely that you'll be absolutely fine! :)

  • Hi [@worried33]‍

Thank you for this, I've had lumps in my neck and armpit for about 2+ months (that I known about anyway). Along with chesty cough that won't subside, recurrent infections and fatigue. Having my ultrasound today and getting myself stupidly worked up!

Found a couple of people who have mentioned their nodes haven't looked suspect so it's calming me down now!

Fingers crossed all is fine

  • Hello I am a 16 year old male, past 2 months been suffering health anxiety badly. And during my health anxiety I had cramps in my neck and the back of my head and I though it would be something serious like cancer tumour. And I had self obsession on Google, and it brings the bad news and doom and gloom about cancer. So one day in December I felt a lump in my neck on the right side, and I had fears it's follicular Lyphoma or a type of lymphoma and I stated googling and it's been on my head. But I saw the GP today he felt it he said it's a swollen gland and I mentioned I have suffered from 3 cold 1 in October 1 In November and 1 in December.

He said sometimes they stay swollen due to a infection and he said sometimes it takes months for it to go down. But it's only one swollen gland that I can feel underneath the skin in my neck. But I maintain healthy all the time I go to the gym, I do boxing and I watch what I eat, sometimes for our dinners we cut down on carbs. But cancers come down do the lack of diet and exercise. And also previously I had a blood test, and my bloods were clear but my white blood cell count was quite low and I still had this lump in my neck back then. But at the time I was suffering a cold and a cough.

But I have fears it might grow slowly overtime and I have hypochondria, and I don't wanna see myself having cancer it's scary to think about. But I have no other lumps around the body it's only one in my neck. I have no symptoms linking to lymphoma so I just hope it's a reactive lymph node that hasn't completely gone down. But the GP said have a another blood test done and we'll see then.

Also when I was young my mum past away with stage 4 bowel cancer and it scares the life out of me if I could get it but it's my health anxiety and it lurks about at times. And I have cut down on Google search.

And it will be great if someone reads this message, and tell me there same experience of what I am going through

by the way my name is Vikram.

  • You've been through something that would be very traumatic for any kid, losing a parent so young. So i can see why you are over fretting about such things. It would make the best of us do that.

As someone looking in from the outside, i will say you have done the right thing going to the gp so at least you didn't just ignore it like many people do in the hope it goes away. However, it's a doubled edged sword. Even though you've been reassured, you're still in the same position mentally as you were prior. Health anxiety can be crippling. It can ruin your life just like any illness can ruin your life.

Purely going on what you have written and taking your age into account, I highly doubt you do have anything. Lymph node can and do stay enlarged long after what caused them to swell has long vacated the body. I have some enlarged nodes in my neck from when i used to get tonsillitis. That was over 3 decades ago. So yeah, once a node enlarges, it very common for them to remain more prominent than nodes that haven't swollen.

I think you need to speak to someone about your fears and why you have those fears (the loss of your mother). You are young, so do not waste your life worrying about cancer. I mean, you'd be in a state if you were ill, but you're living in that same fear even in health.  So either way, you have zero enjoyment.

Google is not a diagnostic tool. It will never ever tell you what you have or don't have. Only a physical appointment with an appropriately trained professional can do that. Google works on algorithms.  Algorithms that make them money.  Cancer being the main headline people seek out, it throws those results up. Why? Because, yeah, it's what the masses seek out.

Seriously, type "unexplained leg bruise" into google. BOOM you now have suspected leukaemia. Sore head? BOOM you now have a brain tumour etc etc etc.

Google is great for when you know what you are dealing with. It's a wealth of information, plus it puts you in touch with similar people. But it is not a diagnostic tool in any shape or form.

  • Thankyou so much getting back to me, my Dad knows I have health anxiety and he knows I worry about silly things but I usually go college 3 days of the week except Thursday and Friday and by staying in I have nothing to do and I am alone with my thoughts and that's how my health anxiety kicks in by not doing anything. But I am good at going gym, and boxing and I am a healthy person. As you said lymph nodes stay swollen for a while after an infection, but my health anxiety just pops the topic in my head CANCER  by Google.

And also since my mum passed it was hard I had a very close relationship with her we had close ties with eathother. But after she passed my Dad got into food awarenesses of maintaining a healthy diet get regular excerise  and also keep mindfulness up to date daily and I meditate every morning aswell. And also sometimes I get anxious going to the doctors and sitting there infront of the doctor and waiting till they say something if it's good or bad. But again it's the false thoughts that appear in my head.

  • Me and my dad also have a close relationship we talk all the time. And about my fears.
