Possible asbestos in home has been disturbed, not realised

We have artex ceilings in the hallway and under stairs. Survey report on house said asbestos may be present. For some reason, we never followed it up. The ceiling under the stairs has been disturbed from accidental knocks to it and where it was partially broken already, it crumbled more because of these knocks. I remember once breaking a part of it away, and it crumbling, before thinking I should stop, as it would be a pain to re-plaster. We even drilled into the ceiling to install a smoke alarm once.

A recent conversation made me think I should check the report on the house, which I have tonight. It's an old Victorian house, and that is when I saw again that there is a risk if asbestos in these ceilings. We will be getting an asbestos specialist in immediately to find out for sure. We have lived here for a year and a half. The ceiling was disturbed between a year and 6 months ago.

I know all might be ok, and only the specialist will be able to tell and then the GP can provide further medical advice, but I am now quite worried and I am just looking for some reassurance. If it is asbestos and we have well and truly breathed it in on two occasions, and then lived in it for a further 6 months - year, is this length of exposure a severe risk or low risk? I have tried searching for answers on how long the exposure has to be before it is harmful, but have only got vague responses of 'many years', but maybe it's not known. If anyone does know from experience or knowledge, I'd be very grateful for your thoughts.

Thank you.

  • Hi hope you don't mind but I've sent you a friend request so I can ask you a question

  • Hi. I have been driving myself crazy over recent exposure to asbestos from stupidly sanding part of our bedroom ceiling. Could I contact you for further info?

  • Hi. Please feel free to contact me, but I honestly don't know any more than I've posted already.  I was in exactly the same position as everyone else on this thread (which is how I came across it) so found some experts to speak to to reassure myself and my wife.

I then decided to share what I'd learnt on here to help other people.

However, if there is any other way I can help I'd be happy to!

  • Hi.  I have already posted all the info I got from the specialists, but if there's any other way I can help I am happy to.

  • I have been around someone on a night out and in close contact all night and he works in asbestos , I'm paranoid cos I went in his work van the day after and used his phone that I'm going to get these diseases and now anything o touch that I touched that night will release asbestos fibres and read them exact things on Google too , I'm so scared now

  • Hi I'm so anxious and getting myself into a state. I have lived in a house for almost 10 years with artex (popcorn) ceilings, along the edge of some of the ceilings over the years there was some settlement cracks which I filled in and forgot about I now have some paint slightly coming loose above a doorframe/ceiling its only when I googled that it came up as the ceilings may contain asbestos as it was built in the 70's they is also a tiny hole in one of the ceilings where a light fixture was changed before I moved in. I'm now imagining the worst and thinking me and my children's health may be affected because of this. I understand from reading your posts that there is only a small amount of asbestos found in ceilings. I think I'm just looking for some reassurance because Google has made me worry so much with their terrifying stories!

  • Sorry also forgot to mention there was a leak in my boiler cupboard ceiling from a problem with the roof so water had come through and dampened the ceiling obviously. The roof was repaired and the ceiling dried out would this also be releasing asbestos fibres? The ceiling hasnt sagged or crumbled just has left a horrible brown water mark. Like I mentioned this inside a cupboard so the door is closed most of the time. I've got myself into such a state about all of this and worried sick about what damage this could've done to mine and my 2 children's health and like I mentioned previously googling it has terrified me but this page seems more reassuring and people seem more knowledgable.

  • Hi

have just been reading you post. So feeling a little concerned, I have an 10x8ft outhouse connected to my house (build in the 1950's) we took a ceiling down as it was all cracked and breaking. The window was open but I did not wear a mask the second day and th room was full of thick dust the door to the outhouse was open. Since then I have been told it was most likely asbestos plastboards and to look for something similar to horse hair within it. Which I could not see , I have ordered a test but concerned about all the dust around the house. An given I have a week immune system and respiratory problems already. I was in and out of the room all day.

any advice would be much appreciated
