Could my Daughter have Lymphoma

Hi,

I'm new here and I'm not sure if I have posted this message twice because I cant find my first post if I have I'm sorry lol

My daughter is 16 found a lump in her armpit 6 weeks ago, went to the G.P the next day and there were a few in her armpit, groin and collarbone,  went for urgent bloods tests they came back the next day and doctor said they were all clear which is a good sign. Sent for glandular fever tests which came back a week later 2 negative and 2 positive results?? Which said could have had the ebv virus when she was younger used to suffer alot with her tonsils and had them removed 5 years ago so said could be an old or new infection. Did another examination that day and lumps are in both armpits, collarbone and both side of groin, was referred to hospital for urgent scans. When I rang the hospital for timescale to see if we could work around her exams bless she is sitting her Gcses at moment they said middle to end of June?? Even though urgent they are very busy so we have a private scan booked for this Friday 31st may. All G.P said was when scans come back clear come and see me and will retest for glandular fever,  when I asked what are they testing for he wouldn't answer me and i asked could it be Lymphoma if not what else could it be and he said Children get lots of lumps for lots of different reasons. Am i been paranoid or is my concern to be worried justified. Sorry if I'm babbling on would be grateful if you have experienced anything similar.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post

Xx

  • I have been through this myself with my daughter who was 5 at the time, they thought it was leukaemia at first but test showed all clear so then came lymphoma as her lymph nodes were up and very large, they even operated on one of the lymph nodes and removed it to see if it was cancerous, it’s the worst thing in the world not knowing what the outcome will be but sometimes it really is nothing to worry about as after all the worrying, hospital visits and sleepless nights she was fine! We still haven’t got an answer as to why her lymph nodes are like this but sometimes they appear swollen when in fact they are fine, hope this helps a little and wish you and your daughter the best of luck! Xx

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Hope you dont mind me asking were they in her armpits groin and collarbone.

  • They are hard, rubbery pea size lumps and lots of them x

  • Hi there, and sorry for all this stress and worry you're going through, and that your daughter is going through especially during exam time.

It's not that you're necessarily worrying for nothing, just that these lumps are incredibly common, the armpit, groin and neck region are the most common places to get such lumps.  I've had many over the years, at one point I had 8 around my neck (admittedly I never checked anywhere else!!!) no caused was ever found, decades later of them 2 are still there.  Doctors tend to tell us that swollen lymph nodes due to infection go down in a matter of weeks, but sometimes they do stay permanently.  I had the one behind my ear still from mumps 38 years ago.

All too often with lumps like this no cause will be found.  Often by the time the patient presents to the GP with lumps the cause of them, if an infection, has already subsided and can't be traced.  And that infection won't necessarily even have caused noticeable symptoms, some people are healthy enough that they can have an infection and not know.

They will test for lymphoma as it is sensible to take the belts and braces approach.  And there is no guarantee that we can give that it won't be lymphoma, but thankfully the chances are still incredibly small of it being lymphoma so please try and hold onto that.  It has become common place on here to have people on with swollen lymph nodes in those areas panicking about lymphoma, and I can only think of one case where it has turned out the cause was actually lymphoma.

So, you're not worrying over nothing, but it is definitely best to try and put the worry aside as statistically it is likely to be something far less serious than lymphoma, all the worry is doing is robbing you of your time, best not to let it do that.  Trust me, I know it's easier said than done!

Best wishes, really hoping everything turns out to be fine with your daughter and it's just 'one of those things'.

  • I'm even more hopeful, that is the exact description I would give of my neck ones.

  • Thank you so much I feel abit more at ease now

  • Hi sorry for late reply but they were very large in her neck at first then we noticed some in her groin and armpits and finally they came up on the collarbone, at the time she was also soaking her pillow at night with sweats so she had us all worried but it’s good that your doctor is being thorough as we had to go to 3 different doctors before anyone would investigate, to this day they haven’t gone down but she hasn’t had any problems since, stay positive (I no it’s hard) and I hope everything goes well for you both today! X

  • My Daughter had ultrasound today the ones in groin doctor seemed to think benign , collarbone ones wasnt sure but one of the armpits said they were very suspicious and abnormal was sent to hospital for biopsy this afternoon and took two biopsies and said to ring 2 weeks today. We have had a rollercoaster of a day and are taking things step by step and will deal with whatever we need to. Xx

  • G.P rang few hours after having the scan and biopsy to see him on Monday to discuss the scan, is there anything that our G.P would tell us that we dont already know from yesterday's Doctor who did the scan and biopsy.  Is it a formality that the G.P has to do. Feeling extremely worried and trying not to be in front of my daughter she has GCSE exam before the surgery appointment.

  • After my daughters surgery we went to the GP for biopsy results so maybe that’s why he wants to see you, I remember being extremely worried as the results came back so quick, everything goes through your mind and it’s completely normal to only look at it as bad as I no I did! One of her lymph nodes looked suspicious on the scan that’s why they removed it so again I wouldn’t look into that too much or u will just drive yourself crazy, I would go and see your GP as they might be able to put your mind at rest, anything you need even if your just having a bad day feel free to msg me as I didn’t have anyone to speak to who had been through this so I no it can be a lonely place, thinking of you both! :)
