Petechiae- very worried.

I am very worried due to me always linking petechiae with leukaemia

Hello

In January, a small patch of petechiae appeared on my leg nothing more nothing less. I went to the doctors and did a blood test and they said I was fine and it was nothing to worry about.

It went away however a month ago it appeared again but bigger, I also gave many dots on my feet and legs.

I am very worried any advice?

  • My wife has the same issue.  For those who don't know, petechiae are dots of blood which appear under the skin; they often appear with purpura, which are larger areas or patches of blood under the skin, rather like a bruise. They appear suddenly, then fade over time. Usually, the dot or patch is well beneath the surface of the skin, but just occasionally it  might bleed. The dots and patches can appear anywhere.

My wife has had a couple of blood tests but everything seems ok. It just appears to be something that has started as she's got older. It was startling at first, but our GP has reassured us that there's nothing wrong.

As a general rule, we advise people not to search for their symptoms on Google.  The problem is that if you follow any chain of symptoms far enough, you will always reach cancer or some other dire condition.

I think since your patches have reappeared you should revisit the doctor, who may want to repeat the blood work.

  • Hello it’s been a while.

The spots have faded away yet some single ones randomly appear and sometimes appear when I itch.

i have been to the doctors my blood is fine.

i have been referred to a dermatologist which I am going to next week.

however can I rule out Leukemia? I am so terrified! I have no other symptoms.

  • I should remind you that I'm not a doctor. However, I think if your bloods are ok then Leukaemia is very unlikely.

  • Thank you for answering. I really appreciate it. I will remain calm and keep in touch with the doctors.

  • Hi

i just wanted to ask you what the outcome was for you? I also get these a lot and have done for a few months. I have also had blood test which was normal and they haven’t said anything else. I’m getting more worried as it’s happening every couple of days and also happens when I itch aswell.

  • Hi!

Saying that ur bloods are fine is a very good sign!

So I had went to the doctors and they weren’t concerned about it and just ruled it off as maybe a reaction to an animal or just an overall reaction in my body .  They did say that my white blood cell level was just a tiny bit low but from there it has increased so I guess I’m fine now as I’ve had more blood test done and they said that there is no concern .

If you’re really concerned about it go to the doctors again but don’t worry as it might just be a reaction your body is having

  • Yeah that’s fair enough.. I am just worried because I haven’t got any pets or been around any particularly. I have been getting the dots aswell as bad bruising for a few months and had 2 blood tests that came back fine.. I did have blood transfusions before all this started happening as I had a stillbirth because of abruption (blood clot) so I guess I’m just scared it’s related to that and that something bad will happen when we decide to try and have another baby

  • I get this tiny red dots and really wish I didn't because they constantly worry me, I've been to the doctors twice and he didn't really know what they were or what caused them, he did my bloods which came back normal so said not to worry but I get sooo many of them! They just started on one arm and within 3 years I get them on both arms, back, tummy, legs, they don't seem to go either maybe fade a little but that's it, does anyone else think this isn't normal?

  • Mine turned out to be low folic acid after 6 blood tests starting from mid April this year... they said it was profoundly low and asked if there had been any changes to my diet (which there hadn't) and said to take folic acid tablets for a month and then get checked with another blood test. They said that and another couple vitamins can make you more prone to bruising if you get low...
