Bladder tumour scared

Hi,

I've been having urinary symptoms such as burning and stinging and pain holding urine since last sepetember, I had a full CT of my urinary tract in January which all came back clear. I thought I was improving but I finally had my cystoscopy last week which revealed a small papillary tumour in my bladder. I wasn'ty given any infomation on this ony told I'd be fastracked on the 2 week cancer referral for an urgent op to have it removed so they can see what it is.

I'm just in shock at the moment, I'm 35 I've never smoked and hardly drink, relatively healthy, I've got 2 little girls 2 and 5, I'm so worried waiting for the appointment, I don't know anything about bladder cancer or what the chances are of this thing being bad. I started googling but scared myself half to death as the first thing that came up said almost all bladder tumours are cancerous.

I know no one can tell me what I have until this thing is out but if anyone has had anything simliar or could just be here for a handhold it would be great, feeling quite lonely at the moment, especially at nights.

  • Snap! Same thing happened to me. In two days I'm having my pre-op assessment, and then surgery within two weeks.  I'm 65 so it's maybe more to be expected at my age, but I've never smoked and I haven't had alcohol for more than 20 years - not that I was a heavy drinker when I did drink.

One big difference is that I also had an early stage prostate cancer back in 2010 and had my prostate removed.  This is therefore my second brush with cancer.  I tell people that I enjoyed it so much first time round that I decided I wanted to go through it again ;-)

I imagine you saw the tumour on the cystoscopy.  Mine looked quite pretty but I estimate its size was less than 1cm and there was only one. I guess yours is similar.  Being an old hand, the first question I asked was: "How curable is this?" to which the reply was "Very!".  That's really reassuring.

So, we're both looking at a rigid cystoscopy with diathermy under general anaesthetic. Probably less than one hour.  Then follow up with more flexible cystoscopies for at least a year, possibly longer.  These things can recur, but it's perfectly feasible to have this surgery repeated several times if necessary.  We both hope it's not necessary, but knowing that it's just a possibility I find reassuring.

No one likes to have cancer, and it's a worry. Despite my upbeat attitude, I'm worried now.  But cancer is just a word, it's not a sentence.  This is just a blip on life's highway.

I'm going to finish this particular post with a word about Dr Google. DON'T GOOGLE.  You only end up scaring yourself stupid.  I made that mistake when I had prostate cancer, and I'm not going to make it again.

  • Thank you for you post, it made me smile. It's reassuring they said it was curable, I asked my consultant a similar question and they said 'lets see what the biopsy comes back with' which didn't fill me with confidence!

I actually though mine was quite pretty too. Kind of like a little clump of seaweed blowing around in the waves. It looked quite happy.

Best of luck to you with your removal, do come back and let me know how you get on and I will too :)

  • Hi Coco,

I have came through your thread when I was googling as I am so scared too.

How are you now? I hope you are doing well and healthy.

  • Hi Klqoo9. Welcome to the forum.

It doesn't look like Coco has posted anything for a year or so, which usually means that everything is ok and she no longer needs the support of the forum.

I had my bladder cancer removed last year and I'm having my second follow up cystoscopy in a few weeks - so I'm hoping that there hasn't been any recurrence.

You say that you're scared - Can I suggest you start a new thread and tell us all about yourself and why you're scared.  It is far better to start a new thread rather than continue an old one because you'll get more people seeing it and chipping with their ideas and experiences.

  • Hi Coco321,

How's everything going? Been reading thru your post. I'm of a similar age,and I too have a little girl who is my world.

How are you getting on with treatment now?

Did you have any other symptoms which made you go to the doctor's?
