Anxiety from waiting!!

Hi, I have found 3 lumps in the left side of my body & all within the lymphatic system/ breast tissue. I found one in my neck (just under my chin half way between my ear & front of jaw) around November 2018 but was unwell so put it down to general swelling. It hasnt gone down since then but thought nothing of it as it doesn't hurt & moves slightly, until Sunday just gone when I found a quite large lump in my breast. Again its hard & doesn't move much at all, I then also found a hard & lumpy lump closer to my armpit. I made an apt with my GP for Wednesday (yesterday) and she has referred me for tests at the Hospital ( breast clinic i believe) She said my Left breast & armpit tissue are vastly different to my right side. She is also concerned with the lump under my chin. I am only 23 and have a young child so am freaking myself out more than I probably should. So what can I expect from my apt at the clinic?

The lumps have been found alongside other changes to my breast that have been spotted over the last month/ 6 weeks. I now have a fold in nipple at the top which makes it point upwards, a swelling where the lump is situated & this goes right to my nipple. I also have noticed what I can only describe as a letdown pain you get when breastfeeding (my child finished breastfeeding over a year ago) and also nipple discharge that is very close to the look of early colostrum. The GP asked if I am sweaty/ get chills which I am always cold but recently I am ALWAYS cold like chilled to the bone throughout the day, this is coupled with cold but sweaty palms (something that is very new to me) but once i get into bed for the night im so hot all night.

I did suffer with secondary infections of the Lymph nodes as a child (called mesentric adinitis) almost every time I had a throat infection. So was wondering if this would increase my chances of anything sinister?

Sorry for such a long essay, I don't really have anyone to talk to that can help ease my nerves.

Thanks for reading :)

  • Okay so update: my GP called today to tell me I have an apt at the hospital on the 20th May. So a little over 2 weeks from the first GP appointment. As I am under 30 and no breast cancer within the family I have had to wait slightly longer even though the GP put in an urgent referral. (however I guess its only a little out of the 2 week guideline for urgent referrals)

So now we wait, and waiting is always the hardest part so if anyone could share their similar stories to help ease my mind that would be amazing and I would be forever greatful.

    Thanks for reading :)

  • Hi Nannydukes and welcome to the forum.

I hope this information I've found about what to expect at your breast clinic appointment will help to put your mind at ease but fingers crossed some of our ladies who have been through this will be along soon to share their experiences with you.

Good luck for the 20th May Nannydukes. We'll be thinking of you and hoping the lumps aren't anything untoward.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Steph,

Thank you for the reply & the link. Once I get a quiet 2 minutes I will definitely have a look at that.

Sorry to be a bother but im really out of my depth here & my family, although supportive, arent the best to get answers from. So I was wondering if anyone could give me some questions I should be thinking about asking at the appointment? I've got the usual ones like 'what is it' & 'benign or malignant' 'if malignant how do we treat it & if benign do we just leave it' etc but I really want to be prepared as I suffer with general anxiety &hospitals really set me off (as im sure they do most people) I just dont want to clam up on the day & not be able to ask questions I really need answers to

    Thanks again :)

  • Hi so sorry you are going through this, it is such a scary time. I was recently diagnosed with renal cancer and i am now nearly 5 weeks post surgery but i too was referred to a specialist with a list of questions (write them down as you think about them) i just want to say that they may not have all the answers you need at this visit, at this early stage they will probably need to do more tests. I expected all my questions to be answered at the first appointment and they couldnt and i was almost more upset with this than the original diagnosis. Dont worry about the type of questions you ask, they are no daft questions, if it worries you, ask! They will have probably heard it before. You may clam up on the day, you will most definately cry, hand them your list of questions if you cannot bring yourself to ask them. There will also probably be something you remember afterwards, i was given the number of a mcmillan nurse to contact which was useful.

I hope your appointment isnt too scary and you get some answers.

    Hugs x

  • Hi Riggers

Thanks for your reply, I am definitely going to write the questions down & take them with me. My best friend is coming with me so will probably just ask her to make sure I ask everything I need to.

P.s. I wish you all the best

  • Thank you, you too.

Im glad someone is going with you, an extra pair of ears is very useful xx
