Any survivors/fighters of tonsil/throat/oral cancers?

Firstly I would like to point out that I am not diagnosed. I mean no disrespect to those fighting this terrible disease, I'm honestly here hoping for some advice seeing as my trip to the doctors has brought me no closer to understanding what might be wrong with me. I can feel there's something amiss, but my doctors are writing me off as a hypochrondriac.

To start, I'm not asking to be diagnosed by internet strangers, only writing some symptoms I have for those who might have had a similar experience.

I have had a chronic sore throat for 8+ months. I can swallow fine and it doesn't feel like there's something in my throat, but it does feel like a have a tight band around my neck and it especially feels sore above and around the adam's apple, so much that I'm constantly rubbing it for relief. I looked inside my mouth out of curiousity and there's no redness or noticable swelling of the tonsils, but I did look more closely at one of the tonsils which was different from the other at the very top. There's something that looks almost like a growth to me (like a pimple maybe) and has the texture of a scab, but it's hard to tell there's something there with where it is. (Doctor couldn't even see it.)

About a couple weeks ago, I realized I can't drink any carbonated beverages or mouth wash with alcohol because it burns my tonsils, particularily the right one with the suspected growth on it.

After seeing a doctor three times and having a sonogram done on my lymph nodes (no swelling), and blood tests (all clear expect high Iron.) I was finally referred to an ENT. I will be seeing them hopefully in the next few weeks, but it would be very appreciated for those of you who might have some advice for me.

It's probably obvious that I'm self-diagnosing myself with cancer, but I don't think it's unreasonable to think it, either. I don't have step, mono or tonsilities. I have gerd, but it's controlled with meds. The only thing -- unfortunately, that I can come to conclude is possible cancer or a very bad bout of anxiety. It doesn't help that I was a heavy drinker and smoker for many years.

Any responses would mean the world. Thank you to all who took the moment to read.

  • Hello,

I have been having almost identical symptoms to you - and I have a small lump behind my left tonsil. On top of your symptoms, I've had a really heavy jaw too. My ENT has seen me twice, we also did a CT scan and found nothing. The lump is still there, and I strongly believe it's the root of my pain but my ENT wants to discharge me instead of looking at next steps.

Anyway, I hope my situation reassures you that sometimes these things are potentially unexplainable.

  • Hi I am 8 month post radiotherapy for cancer if rightbtonsil with several lymph nodes. I had no symptoms what so ever apartbfrom a lump above my collar bone which was the lymph node collecting the deal cancer cells in beknown to me.

  • Thank you for your response. I'm so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I heard many people's first sign was a lump on their neck, or somewhere close to the area where the cancer started. It's scary to know that it's very common to be misdiagnosed, I guess that's reason why I'm staying determined to get an answer because if it turns out to be something like cancer, it's best to catch it in it's early stages. My family thinks I'm crazy, and I can't blame them. However, I always say that nobody knows your body better than you and if you feel like there's something wrong, there just might be. That and I really need to stay off google, let's be honest.

Anyway, thank you again for sharing. I will keep this updated!

  • Thanks for replying Healthanxiety. You have definitely reassured me some. It's good that they didn't find anything sinister, however that's a shame you're still experiencing pain. I know my pain is tolerable, but it's still bothersome and I would hate to have my ENT brush me off if he doesn't think it's anything worth investigating into.

Have you ever considered (or thought you needed) a different opinion?

I'm not medical expert, but it sounds like biopsying a sample of the tonsils isn't the worst idea when there's a strange growth on it.

  • Hi no worries good luck keep in touch

  • Hey, thanks a lot for replying too. I have been thinking about a second opinion for the past couple of days, I'm thinking to pay for a private appointment, but debating it still. I really hope your ENT appointment goes well, keep us updated.
