Painful to walk & touch

I have been quite curious about lumps on my pubic area for some time now.. Although I have been continuously struggling with this, I still have not been able to find out what the problem is. I have recently (about a day or two ago) got a new painful lump on the left side of the area underneath the skin. It is about a size of a lid off a bottle of pop (or slightly abit bigger) and is putting me in extreme pain to the point where I’m limping and with a soft touch it starts pounding and getting hot. I have been coping these few days by putting sudocrem and Vaseline on with cotton pads on top so it doesn’t feel as uncomfortable. I have not bothered visiting gp as they always say they will only see if it’s an emergency and if not I’ll have to ring in at 8:30 am and they don’t give an appointment till 2 weeks later! Also even if I did manage to get seen on time, I feel extremely self conscious and uncomfortable showing this. I really do not know what to do and would love to know if anyone else is struggling with the same problem and how they are coping? I do not want to think of these lumps as cancer but please let me know if anything seems like something I need to be cautious about!!!

  • Hi Riirii.  Welcome to the forum.

To be absolutely blunt, this IS an emergency and you need to see a doctor.  Many patients think that "emergency" means that you're bleeding to death, or your leg is hanging off by a thread, or some such dire circumstance.  However, the reality is less drastic. An emergency is something that can't wait for a routine appointment.  To me, any uncontrolled pain or something that prevents you from functioning normally counts as an emergency.  You qualify on both counts.

The other thing is that when it comes to your health, there is no place for shyness. These lumps are causing you discomfort and they need to be seen. That means that your doctor will have to see them. Quite possibly you'll be sent for an ultrasound, so the sonographer will also see them.

As a prostate cancer survivor, I've had more fingers up the bum than I can count, and my naughty bits have been inspected by all comers. Just last year, my testicles were covered in gel and scanned! If I were shy then I might well be dead by now. I don't particularly like any of this, but I understand that it's necessary and the doctor doesn't enjoy this any more than I do.

So, please make an emergency appointment, and try to control your shyness.  By all means ask for a chaperone to be present during the examination, but don't put this off any longer.

  • Hi I've been thinking about your problem I don't know what it is but with most cancers you don't have any pain it just sneaks up quartly (I'm not medicley trained we learn from reading on here) it's possible you have a cyst or something like that. Don't panic get to the gp get checked out good luck.

  • Hi, I have just seen this, sorry for taking so long to reply. I really appreciate the advice you have given and I am going to definitely put my big girl pants on and have it checked. I should have not left it this long and it’s time I do something about it. Again, thank you and I hope you live a very well life!

  • Thank you for your good wishes, and I send my good wishes back to you.  Let us know how you get on at the doctor. Your feedback helps us to improve our answers to later questions.

  • HI RiiRii,

I agree with Telemando. Get it checked out so you can get some relief from the pain. And, let me tell you, health professionals are used to looking at our private parts.  I am a cervical cancer survivor and I have had multiple people looking and examining my most private areas!  Good luck and make sure to follow through with an appointment!
