Melanoma - waiting on lump biopsy

Hi all,

My wife was diagnosed with stage 1B melanoma four and a half years ago after checking on a suspicious looking mole at the top of her right arm. She had it removed via wide excision and has had regular skin checks since with no issues. Also no irregularities in her lymph nodes. She’s in good health. A couple of months she noticed two small lumps, one in her left buttock and one at the top of her leg (at crease with buttock) on right side. They are pea sized lumps, maybe slightly larger. The consultant wasn’t too concerned but to be on safe side they removed the one on left buttock for testing. When they removed it they ruled out lypoma (fatty tissue) so now our anxiety has gone up a notch. We’re now waiting on results.

I work at a hospital and managed to speak to one of the skin nurses. Naturally she said we won’t know until the results are through, but the location didn’t necessarily tie in with a melanoma re-occurrence based on where she had it before (upper arm) although she admitted it can’t be ruled out. I guess I’m just canvassing opinions from people who may have had similar experiences as to what our odds are of this being a re-occurrence as worried sick at the moment. Feels like we’re backed into a corner now that lypoma has been ruled out.

thanks all

  • Hi Andy,

I can well understand the worry you & your wife are going through - after one diagnosis of melanoma you feel that every lump, bump and pain thereafter is a re-currence.

I myself have had a few lumps and bumps removed since my primary was removed many years ago. Thankfully all but one were benign - the one that wasn't was a very large lump in my groin that was metastised melanoma (the same leg as my primary). However the location of your wife's lumps, as the skin nurse says, doesn't tie in with a recurrence. Hopefully they will be just benign lumps or, best of a bad bunch, new primary melanomas (which are better than a recurrence). Whatever the outcome, please remember that in the 4 years since your wife's original melanoma, research & treatments have moved on & continue to do so. So take heart. Good luck and please let us know how she gets on.

  • Thanks Angie, I really appreciate your reply and wish you the very best for the future and whatever treatment you are having. My wife has had a few moles cut out since the primary diagnosis and all have been fine. She didn’t have any blemishes on her skin near these lumps. No red marks or abrasions, which the skin nurse said can be signs of another melanoma. I know that it won’t all be clear until the results come through but clutching to anything which is positive right now as feel sick to the pit of my stomach at worst case scenario and what it might entail. Thanks again
