Four weeks ago i got a 14 day fast track to sort out two breast lumps, one of which is near my armpit and growing larger. I received my letter and was told theyd phone me on the 28th feb, they didnt so i phoned them the following day. I got told the clinic i was waiting to go to wasnt open as they had no consultants or technicians.  I waited and waited and then phoned back on the 18th March, and got told they had very high numbers of waiting patients and not to worry as theyd not forgotten about me........ Im still waiting ( 26th March) and am at the point where i dont know wether to laugh or go hide in a corner somewhere

  • Hello Shaz and welcome.  This sounds dreadful.  I am sure there are people here on this forum who will know the direction in which to point you but in your shoes I would give MacMillan Cancer Support a ring now (0808 808 0000) as they will surely  be knowledgeable about how to deal with this without further delay.  Please let us know whart they say as (sadly) others may also find themselves in your situation.   Annie

  • Wow, that's unacceptable! I wonder if your gp could pull any strings?? I'm at a loss ...really I am....

  • Hello Shaz

I am so sorry to read your story.  It is absolutely unacceptable.  The Government has pathways for ?cancers.  Hopefully, MacMillan can help you sort this unacceptable delay out.  Or as Marlyn rightly says your GP could try to do something - even if only to gently remind them of pathways.  Why do they think two week pathways were introduced.

Could you be referred to another hospital?

Let us us know how you are getting on.

  • Hi,

Been back to Drs, and she couldnt believe id been left a month, she sent a fax through on Friday and told me if id heard nothing by this friday to let her know. On week 5 now

  • Bless your heart.  It’s bad enough when everything gets done in a timely manner.  It sounds as though your gp is right there with you.

    Hi Shaz,

Welcome to our community. I am so sorry to hear about the wait you are having. Hospitals are meant to see you within a 2 week time frame for emergency breast referrals. I may be wrong about this, but I think that you are entitled to be sent to another hospital, if your local hospital cannot work within this time frame.

There is a gentleman on this site who has worked within the NHS and has a good idea of what people are entitled to. I shall contact him and ask him to reply to you.

I sincerely hope that you get seen soon. You must be climbing the walls after 5 weeks!

Do please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine, Thankyou , that would be wonderful, i must admit i feel a little better having reached out on this site, i feel a lot less left out in the wilderness so to speak. You all understand whats in my head. Thankyou all so much Shaz
  • Oh shaz, this is hard enough as it is isn't it?  Davek is a font of information.......you need answers ......thinking of you xxxx

    Hi Shaz,

I have been in touch with Davek who is offline for a while, but will swing by later. He has confirmed that this is the case in England, but that things are slightly different in the other home countries - here's hoping that you are based in England.

Dave is a font of knowledge in matters such as this. I'm sure that he can help you when he is in touch.

Meanwhile, never feel alone, We are always here to support you whether for information, advice or simply to moan. With your current situation, we all fully appreciatejust how stressful it is waiting to be seen at the breast clinic and, know that there will be another wait after that before you get the results of any tests.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Shaz,

The best bet would be to ask your GP to chaseit up. If you are in England, you are entitled to be referred to a different hospital Trust if the first one cannot meet the 2 week maximum wait. This is fine if you live in a city where there are several hospitals but not great if you live somewhere remote like Cornwall, Cumbria or Northumbria. This NHS website explains this better than I can and tells you how to complain to your CCG (who effectively pay the hospitals for providing services) www.nhs.uk/.../

CRUK has a guide to the 2 week BC referral process here

    www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../referral-specialist

CRUK also has a guide to the cancer targets in each of the home countries here www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../cs_report_cwt.pdf

Don’t worry about complaining - involve your local councillor and MP if you have to. The way you have been let down by your local Trust is appalling - you have enough stress wondering whether you have cancer without them delaying things past the maximum permitted time.

    I hope this helps.

    Dave
