Breast Clinic Referral

Hi All

I found a lump in my left armpit just over a week ago. I thought it might just be a swollen gland as I had a cold, but it hasn't gone down and the worry was getting to me, so I went and saw the GP this morning.

She did a full breast exam and couldn't find any other lumps, but did seem concerned about the one in my armpit and that it may be a lymph node and has therefore referred me onto the breast clinic. I am now just waiting for a call to come through with a date and time.

Trying my best not to worry, but it's difficult. I'm 36 with a 2.5 year old daughter, so I'm scared. I know no one on here can tell whether it is or is not cancer, or anything like that. Just need somewhere to chat really.

I know that biopsies and aspirations are two of the possible tests they will do. Are they painful? Do they numb you/

Everything I've read suggests that results of scans are likely to be on the same day, but biospies will have a wait. How long is the wait, does anyone know?

Thanks in advance.

  • Well, I didn't get a call back from GP or from the clinic. I called the GP surgery back shortly before I left work (in case they tried to call whilst I was driving home) and was told that the GP had added a note to the system to say that if I still hadn't heard from the clinic by Monday, call back then and only then would they chase. This was different to what GP had told me on the day, as well as different to what is detailed in the leaflet she handed me. Soooo frustrated!

Then husband reminded me that we had BUPA cover in place and to check with them. And yeah, so I called last night and they will cover the initial consultation and tests, and if treatment was needed, that would all be covered also. So they have authorised the one stop clinic appointment to be done privately and I have booked an appointment this morning. So I am seeing someone next Wednesday at 1pm. So relieved to have an appointment!

  • Today's the day. Fingers crossed all is fine! x

  • Hiya. All fine. He examined both breasts and did ultrasound on them both. Nothing sinister. Just milk glands filling up still and sometimes bursting, causing inflammation and then the lymph nodes react to that. All linked to me producing high levels of estrogen and also why I get such heavy periods (and why the mini pill helped to reduce them). He has a video on YouTube explaining how to check breasts and to do it every month on 8th day of cycle. He was really nice and thorough and explained everything really well xxx so relieved! Xxx

  • Oh that's wonderful!!! I love good news.....now relax....and breathe.....well done Hun xxxx

  • Thanks Marlyn. I was very relieved! But I was also reassured that he did ultrasound as well as checked them. Otherwise I think I would've still worried. I hope your treatment is going well and you're not feeling too bad. Thank you for commenting, and for your support xx
