Pain under arm and in breast

Hi

im 43 yrs old abs for the last 4 weeks I have been experiencing a pain in my left arm pit which had now spread to a pain in my actual breast as well - it feels like sometimes it is going straight through the centre of my nipple/breast and is a sharp stabbing pain. I’ve also noticed pain in my right armpit but not as regular  the pain in my arm pit is like a burning pain and sometimes tingles

I can’t find any lumps in my arm pit or in my breast - I’m very flat chested so I can only feel the muscle/chest wall but both my breasts are really tender and sore - something I’ve never had at all even when I have my period

I’ve been to the gp but he didn’t even examine me and said it could be hormonal or related to a gastric condition that I’m currently having investigated (reflux or gastritis) so was quite dismissive

should I be worried? I feel like as I’m already being seen about my gastric issues that he thought I was being a hypochondriac

the pain in my armpit is worse when I reach out for something or stretch but I don’t think it’s muscular (I rarely exercise or lift anything heavy)

im worries if it’s something serious and should keep pushing to go back and see another GP?

any advice would be appreciated

thanks

Chalotte

  • Hi wondered had you got to the bottom of your under arm pain Cmackenzie? Im the same for nearly a year now

  • I am so relieved to see I'm not the only one with these symtoms.  my pain is horrid.  I've had 5 weeks & waiting for results from an mri i had yesterday  & awaiting a appointment from breast clinic but totally convinced myself of the worse.

I also have large breasts & wonder if this is part of the problem. I wondered about costacondritis.

How are things with you now?

  • Hi,

I had the pain over christmas and went privately to the One Stop clinic as my doctor said I had to wait 6 weeks.  The clinic were amazing and I got my results on the day.  6 months on I had my 3 year check on the NHS and got the letter today saying all clear.

The pain was excruitating at times, especially at night when lying down and I too have large breasts.   Its hard not to worry as I was worried sick and wanted answers immediately.  Waiting is horrendous and your mind will tell you the worst.   All I can say is try to stay positive and let me know how you get on.

  • Hi, I've just found this thread after doing the dreaded Google search for "pain in breast spreading into arm".  About 10 days ago I noticed I was flinching when my partner hugged me, and realised my left breast felt tender, but not on the surface. The pain got so bad it woke me up in the night. If then started to spread to my armpit, which aches but again I can't feel lumps.  I phoned the GP and as I was coming onto my period, she said she thought it was hormonal and asked me to hang on until this week. The pain did subside and yesterday it went altogether, but today it's back with a vengeance and also seems to be affecting my arm. It feels tingly and just generally strange. My breast also feels like it's burning inside but isn't actually hot. I'm going to see the GP tomorrow and I'm terrified. I've never posted on a forum before but I needed to try and articulate it. My sister died of breast cancer in 2019 so anything like this consumes me. I had a scare last year but it was a cyst, but the experience of going for the exam etc made me feel physically sick. I know no one can really say anything to help and I've just got to go and get checked, but maybe writing it down will help. I hope you are all ok after your posts. Xx

  • Hi

Im glad your going to the doctor tomorrow especially with the history is your family,    I know that waiting for an answer is one of the worst experiences and try not to google as you never quite get the answer your looking for to say everything is OK

I had a burning inside my breast and especially pain in my armpit on the left side.  It was excruiating expecially at night. I could not get comfortable

I wont say dont worry because you will but your doing the right thing by seeing the GP, let me know how you get on.

  • Hi all  Just reading through this chat and wanted to share my experience.  I had a lump (milk duct) appear under my armpit when my second son was born.  Had it thoroughly checked and nothing to worry about.   In 2019 I started HRT Femoston (not sure if this is relevant) 2 years ago I started having pain in that armpit, went to the Dr, said it was probably a hair folicle playing up and would disappear within a few weeks.  It didn;t..  A couple of months ago (I'm 49) the pain started to radiate down my breast towards my nipple, went back to Dr, my old Dr had retired, so was a new Dr.  He referred me to the Breast cancer clinic.  I had 2 mammograms and 2 ultra sounds.  Nothing showed up on the ultra sounds but on the mammograms they asked if I'd had any surgery on my breasts as it looked as if there was scar tissue.  I said no - I had not had surgery.  I was scheduled for a core bioposy the week after due to the 'cause for concern area' in my breast.  Today I had my results - it is the earliest form of breast cancer; DCIS.  (the following is copied from www.macmillan.org.uk/.../ductal-carcinoma-in-situ-dcis

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is the earliest possible form of breast cancer. It needs to be treated but is not life-threatening.

Breast cancer usually starts in the cells that line the lobules and the milk ducts that carry milk from the lobule out through the nipple. The place where DCIS starts is the terminal duct lobular unit. In this information, we use the simpler terms lobules and ducts.

In DCIS, the cancer cells are completely contained in the ducts and lobules. The cells have not broken through the walls of the lobules or ducts or grown into surrounding breast tissue. This is because the cells are not yet able to invade other tissues.

I asked about the pain in my armpit and breast and the breast care cancer consultant said this was not connected as you don't experience pain with DCIS!  I don't know - consultants aren't God and I have my suspicions that it is connected.  I'm sorry this isn't good news but as so many people were experiencing similar symptoms and having no answers, I wanted to write this, in the hope that it might provide some answers.  DCIS doesn't manifest as a lump in your breast, as it's in your milk ducts - think of it more like a tree, with branches.  That's how the consultant drew it on a piece of paper for me.  I hope you all receive answers and hopefully knowledge is power and if you can go back to your Drs and tell them about my experience and ask about DCIS they might take you more seriously.  Sending huge love and hugs to you all xx

  • Hi Tinkie,

I had pain from my armpit and upto my breast.  I had no lumps and going to the fast track breast clinic I was given the news it was inflammation of my chest bone.

It is always best to get it checked asap and its good to share experiences, knowledge is powerful.

  • That's interesting - thanks for the info.  What were you advised to do as treatment for that please?

  • Hi,

Its called costochondritis.  I had it a couple of years ago and it came back but this time it was all over the left side of my chest,  basically heat was the best way to treat it.    I also take Primrose oil which was recommended for me by a doctor as I went through the menopause quite early.

  • Thank-you and have a lovely Christmas.
