Pain under arm and in breast

Hi

im 43 yrs old abs for the last 4 weeks I have been experiencing a pain in my left arm pit which had now spread to a pain in my actual breast as well - it feels like sometimes it is going straight through the centre of my nipple/breast and is a sharp stabbing pain. I’ve also noticed pain in my right armpit but not as regular  the pain in my arm pit is like a burning pain and sometimes tingles

I can’t find any lumps in my arm pit or in my breast - I’m very flat chested so I can only feel the muscle/chest wall but both my breasts are really tender and sore - something I’ve never had at all even when I have my period

I’ve been to the gp but he didn’t even examine me and said it could be hormonal or related to a gastric condition that I’m currently having investigated (reflux or gastritis) so was quite dismissive

should I be worried? I feel like as I’m already being seen about my gastric issues that he thought I was being a hypochondriac

the pain in my armpit is worse when I reach out for something or stretch but I don’t think it’s muscular (I rarely exercise or lift anything heavy)

im worries if it’s something serious and should keep pushing to go back and see another GP?

any advice would be appreciated

thanks

Chalotte

  • Happy Christmas to you too.  xx

  • Hi everyone,

I've got a scan referral for January.

    I'm 33.

My left armpit area, is more pronounced then the right. I'd been experiencing pain in my shoulder and arm and so times hands. No lumps. GP a few weeks ago thought musculoskeletal and referred me to physio. I decided I wasn't happy with his answers and had another gp app today. She examined me and could feel something, but wasn't concerned as I'm due on my period, but has referred me anyway.

But no one can seem to tell me what this armpit swelling is.

Do they scan the armpit fat area? What should I be telling them. What sort of questions can I ask?

    I'm inside panicking.

  • Hi,

I'm not an expert, but have experienced armpit pain a couple of times.  The last time I  went to the fast track clinic in January this year, and went privately.  My doctor couldnt feel anything but the pain was intense, she put me on painkillers but it got worse over Christmas.  She said due to covid I would have to wait at least 6 weeks for the breast clinic NHS as I had no lumps.

I started getting pain when i laid down and it spread across my left breast.  I didn't want to wait.  I saw a consultant and had a mamagram and ultra sound and found I had inflammation of the chest bone.  (I had it before but not in my armpit).  I was reassured and in September a follow up NHS mamagram and everything was fine.   There are many causes for the pain, but you are doing the right  thing by getting it checked.  You should get a doctor who will examine your armpit and hopefully put your mind at rest.

Let me know how you get on.

  • Hi Natalie9289

A year ago I went in for a painless swelling in my left armpit. It just looked more puffy than the other side and my GP said it was probably a fat pad as I was carrying a bit of weight.  Nevertheless she sent me to the breast clinic and they ultrasounded the area and said it was fine.  One interesting point the radiologist mentioned that they were seeing a lot of people with the same problem and that they were pretty sure it was being caused by covid boosters.   Have you been vaccinated recently in that arm?

I had a mammogram at the same time as I was due one and I was shocked to discover I had an early breast cancer but that was on the other side!

Get checked out then you can have peace of mind.  It will probably be fine.  Happy Xmas.

  • Hello

I went for an ultrasound about 8 months ago. They mentioned about the covid jabs. But this time I havent had any jabs. Its sore and seems more prominent this morning. Seems to be peaks and troughs.

Hopefully I'll get some answers on January 10th.

I'm 33 with 2 little boys so hopefully my mind will be kept busy!!

  • Hi again Natalie,

I know what you mean, mine seems so much more prominent compared to the right hand side. Do you know if you can get lymph nodes when the armpit fat is, I asked my GP who said she didn't think so, but my lump within my swelling feels like a lymph node. It's so sore, my whole left breast, armpit and arm is painful and achy, I find it uncomfortable to have my arm by my side now and to sleep on this side. I hope I find out the date for my breast clinic referral soon.
