What low fPSA/tPSA and blood in urine could indicate?

Hi,

I have had this difficulty urinating for quite a number of years and tolerating the discomfort and also take Prozasin medication for it.

I had a blood and urine test and it was somehow worrying as it showed blood in my urine,  urine pH=5, fPSA/tPSA=0.1.

I have read this ratio is much more important than PSA on its own.

Has anyone further info and experience of such results/

Thanks for any advice

ttop-Time To Panic?

  • Hi ttop. Welcome to the forum.

I must start out by saying that I'm not a doctor, and we're based in the UK.  In the UK, our medical profession doesn't draw the distinction between fPSA (free PSA) and tPSA (total PSA), and I doubt that any of us here can pass comment on that ratio. If you have the individual values that might be handy to know. It would also be helpful to know your age since age and cancer are inextricably linked together.

The only thing I can say is that there has been some discussion recently over the significance of non-visible traces of blood in urine. In other words, blood that can only be detected by a test stick.  There appears to be a growing thought that in men under 50 this is rarely of any significance.  Many men (of all ages) who would otherwise be unaware of this symptom have a routine urine test and find themselves put on an emergency referral that ultimately finds nothing.

I suggest that it isn't time to panic.  There could be many reasons for blood in urine, and most of them are harmless. You'll no doubt be in for a ride as you go through the procedures of being tested, but try to keep calm and optimistic.  And DON'T PANIC!
