what were your symptoms of lymphoma?

Hi I’m not sure I should even be on here but here goes,

I’ve had a swollen neck node since around May last year, I thought nothing of it until a few weeks ago. I started getting extremely tired so much so I’m falling asleep at dining table or having to go to bed for a nap. I like running but have found myself a little breathless and of course no energy to run like I use to. A few week ago I had a week of crazy night sweats which I put down to the menopause and my itchy skin I put down to dry skin. Got blood tests done at GP surgery and they’re all normal range, my gp isn’t concerned bout the swollen node and says tiredness is because I suffer from under active thyroid but I have this feeling something isn’t right with me, so should I push for another appointment with GP or just wait? Also what were your symptoms before diagnosis?

Sorry if I’m not on proper thread

  • Hi, I would wait and see what your ultrasound shows, they can usually tell if it's a reactive lymph node or if it's something that needs further investigation. If they are worried they will do a biopsy, this is really the only way to tell if it's lymphoma, that and a ct scan. If you are still worried, I'd push for further tests, I think this is the only way to go during this pandemic, don't let it go if you are still worried. Have you checked your neck and under arms for any lumps, I would check there as this is what my haematologist usually does when I go for my check up. Best wishes and fingers crossed it's a good outcome

  • Thankyou so much. I really appreciate your replying and I will take this on board.

  • Hey I have very similar symptoms to you I just wondered wether you have any further results? Xx

  • Sorry for the late reply, stupidly I ignored my symptoms since I last posted, thinking I was just overreacting... and it worked for a while but now I've come back to obsessing over my lymph nodes again. I think I now have around 7 all over my neck.

Finally I've plucked up the courage to call the doctors and I have a telephone appointment with my GP on Tuesday.

    Have you had any tests?

    Clarissa x

  • How did your appointment go? I'm having a very similar worry to yourself.

  • Hi Steve

My Dr decided to see me for an examination and annoyingly they couldn't feel the lymph nodes/lumps that I can feel, so they've said they don't think it's lymphoma but have ordered me an ultrasound anyway for about a month's time and a blood test which I'll do this week. On the bottom of the blood test form the Dr simply put "lymphadenopathy?" but they didn't mention that in the appointment.

Don't put off seeing your doctor. I feel so much better now, even though I have no idea what could be the outcome, at least now I'm on the way to finding out. I don't know about you, but I was just driving myself mad, thinking the worst but not doing anything about it!

    Hope you're ok,

    Clarissa

  • Thank you for the reply Clarissa and I am glad you are feeling better! I had to go to my GP this morning to have a blood test for my diabetes but because they only specialise in that field I have been referred for an appointment on Thursday morning, I know its only 3 days away (soon to be 2) but at the moment it feels like 3 years! My head has been all over the place today especially now I'm feeling a little bit of itchiness, not a big amount just an inkling on different parts of my body from time to time and there is a bit of redness and pain on my leg which whilst could be anything is also a symptom of lymphoma so I've already kind of accepted the worse outcome. The lump/swollen lymph node has been there since 2008 so it's strange why I've suddenly started stressing about it. Fingers crossed I can report good news on Thursday!

  • Hi Steve,

I've only just joined the Chat system today (01-02-21)

If you are any doubt, make an appointment with a GP.

I had a lump in my neck, not painful at all and not particularily solid, kept putting it off for over a year, until I noticed it had got slightly bigger. It took a further year of blood tests, Ultrsound and cell biopsy, and finally a Lymph node biopsy to diagnose that I had Follicular Lymphoma, a lymphoma typically seen in the age bracket 70+. I was 45.

I know that the worry can be all consuming, but the only way to tackle it, is to know whether or not there is an under lying cause. It may simply be that you are fighting infections. My lymph nodes increase when I have a cold etc, and they increase and decrease naturally over the course of a year. The body is full of lymph nodes, but you don't actively tend to examine yourself for them, and you only seem to notice them when you're under the weather - typically in the neck.

My Cancer is in the Indolent stage (slow growing) and have been on the Watch & Wait policy for over 5 years. My health hasn't really deteriorated in that time, so I could have still been here at this point and not known, however, the difference now, is that a have a great medical team behind me who are constantly monitoring my situation.

I can't do anything to change the situation, so I stay positive and try to live life as it should be lived - on my terms.

I hope you manage to get a review , and an answer soon.

    kind regards

  • Hi Scones,

Just reading your post, I have all the same symptoms as you & had an ultrasound on Tuesday where I was also told the problem was my thyroid. My GP had asked for a biopsy too but the doc who did the ultrasound said there was no need. Luckily my GP is brilliant & yesterday she said she's not convinced so has now referred me to Haemotology, I have an appointment on Monday.

I am scared & extremely worried but I am not going to let this go until they find out what is wrong with me as I know there is something

I hope you are doing ok? xx

  • Hi, what a great GP you have. I've read a lot of posts where they don't go onto have further biopsies with the ultrasound, they are usually good at telling if it's worth investigating. No doubt haematologist will want a biopsy, it's the only way to tell if it's lymphoma and what kind of lymphoma it is, there are literally loads of different kinds. Have you checked under your arm and round your groin are as well for lumps. I could see easily on the ultrasound the solid black lump on the screen, I watched while they did the biopsy. The second time round, it was only a pea sized lump but they still did the biopsy and unfortunately for me the lymphoma came back. But hey I feel good at the moment. My appointments are only telephone calls, just had one and she tells me to check these areas and how I'm feeling. I havnt lost weight and don't have night sweats this time so I'm sure I'm still doing ok.she is calling me again in 3 months next time, it's not ideal but I think I will know if things get really bad like my first experience with lymphoma. I hope things go ok with the haematologist, it all takes forever to get all these tests done, be patient, not all lymphomas get treatment if it is. That's now two years since I've been on watch and wait, but I'm happy with that, but I am vigilant, I know I can call my haematologist anytime, she is super. She is the only doctor you can do that with, even during treatment if you are worried about anything, they see you immediately. Fingers crossed for you. X
