Swollen lymph on left side of neck

Hi everyone,

my name is Charlotte and over the last few weeks I have been reading some posts on here and I thought I would join in and try and get a bit of reassurance/stories from other users.

Around 3 weeks ago I went to the doctors because I had 2 lumps on the left side of my neck, one hard and one quite soft, located directly underneath; my doctor ordered blood tests which have come back normal except for high bilirubin and low globulin which are being repeated in a month (full blood count, urea and electrolytes etc - don’t think there were any Tumor marker tests) and she also booked me in for an ultrasound which is next Tuesday. But I am really struggling to think of anything positive that could come from hard lymph with no other signs of infection, when tonight I was having a feel and noticed another node on the right side of my neck and I have gone into total melt down. I am on the verge of a panic attack, I’m terrified of dying and leaving my child and baby and I can only think of the worse. Positive stories will help or anyone in the same boat who can advice me. I know I can’t do anything to stop this but I can’t help but feel ‘dirty’? With these hard lumps in my neck, I just want them to go away. I will update as and when. Thanks for listening.

  • Hello

I'm awaiting an ultrasound for a raised neck lymph node, I've been referred on the 2 week pathway, after waiting and watching for 4 weeks.  I had a telephone assessment yesterday with ENT and I'm feeling so scared, I feel so anxious that I sense that I can't swallow, this came on suddenly (I've had this on occasion before when highly stressed). I don't have any signs of infection

    xx.

  • Hi Emily

I'm back home and emotionally exhausted. The ultrasound showed several lymph nodes but all very small in size, the one of concern measured 2mm. I was told that all nodes looked in the normal range and it was common for nodes to stay up once raised. I feel absolutely over the moon. This is unlikely to require any further intervention other than the follow up with the ENT doctor next week. I think we should both feel assured, sending love and prayers xxx

  • Oh Riley!! I'm so so over the moon for you!! 2mm is so so small!! So happy for you. That's such amazing news. What did they say about them staying raised? Apparently my mum said the one I have has been with me since a child and I was always very sick and it would always come up! Guessing it's been with me for life and I've just over thought it. Xx

    Hi Riley,

I'm delighted to hear that nothing untoward showed up on ultrasound and hope that all goes well with the ENT specialist next week.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Emily

The radiographer said that that some lymph nodes are raised during infection or a virus and stay up. He said that they usually investigate further if the node becomes painful, red in colour or increases in size. During the ultrasound they assess the architecture of the lymph's around the neck, checking for certain characteristics, they only consider further intervention if the node  measures on the ultrasound or 10mm/1cm or more. Its interesting that I had several show up, but they are not detectable to touch alone. Apparently this is common after a virus or infection.  I think we both should be reassured by this, I asked a lot of questions. Try to stay positive and reach out anytime xx

  • Thank you Jolamine and for all your support over the last weeks. Have you had the results of your liver ultrasound as yet. Please let us know how that goes, sending love and prayers xx

  • That's made me feel so much better that some can just stay raised! I use to have repeated infections and my mum said the raised one now  would always come up in my neck guessing it's one that's just stuck around but I'm just so worried!

  • Hi emily, Have you heard any more on the biopsy date?

I was wondering at what point did your doctor refer you for more tests? I've had a swollen lymph node on the right side of my neck for 5 weeks thats growing, then i've noticed four more on the other side in my collarbone and lower neck. Mentioned this to not my usual GP as they didn't have any appointments with my usual GP and only had a phone call appointment with the doctor saying it's "just some lymph nodes, you might just have an infection" although i've had it for weeks.

Was just wondering if i should push for more tests or leave it as it is? I've got a rash over my arms that's like pinpricks and has bruised horribly (doctor said "you must just bruise easily" without even knowing what the rash looked like), i've been so short of breath recently, getting a nosebleeds and extreme bone pain and i'm just really really anxious about it all.

    Hope all is well! x

  • Hello!
ive not heard anything about the biopsy date yet at all! But i rang today to the secretary like I need to know what's going on. It was me who asked for the biopsy for peace of mind I've just read so much online that I've just convinced myself of the most awful thing possible! And honestly please push for your tests!! Don't take no for an answer it's your body and you need to know what's happening with it. Please don't take no for an answer! Xx

  • Hi Emily,

I will ask the ENT to repeat scans again to compare and contrast. Hopefully this will ensure that any changes are monitored. I think it sounds positive that you will be have the biopsy and I'm sure there's nothing to be worried about. The ultrasound would pick up any concerning elements xx

  • Hi, i think it would be advisable and of course for your peace of mind to be referred to ENT, these referrals are expedited under the 2 week pathway for prompt review. Of course this could be an infection or viral response but the key thing is to not prod or poke around as it causes the nodes to swell.  I would push for a referral at the soonest opportunity and whatever you do, don't try to self diagnose through google. It's a scary thing to do when anxiety levels are at an all time high. Please let us know how it goes. We are all here to support one another xx

  • Hi

thank you for responding! googling definitely has panicked me a bit so i stopped doing that, but i'm still just a bit worried as i just don't feel myself and this just doesn't feel normal for me.

i managed to get another phone call appointment today. i asked for a specific gp but got a different one. this new doctor i've never met told im "probably fine" but should make an appointment with the doctor i seen first as she was the one who was concerned about it. that doesn't make much sense to me and again, this doctor didn't ask to see the rash or ask any questions about it or the lumps. i feel like i'm being fobbed off repeatedly when i'm really panicked already. i've been so so itchy and i'm covered in rashes and bruises with now 6 swollen lymph nodes and no appetite at all.

im not sure how or if i should push for further tests and i'm getting so anxious as i just keep feeling worse and worse.

    hope you are well x

    Hi Av123,

I am sorry to hear about your concerns and would definitely advise you to stay well clear of Google, as this will only worry you considerably more and serve no useful purpose. When the doctor you spoke to today has advised you to see the doctor who was concerned about your symptoms in the first place, you should do this. Write down all these additional symptoms that you now have and ask to be referred for further tests.

Sometimes we have to push our doctors to get referred, but the only way to be sure that all is ok is to get things checked out.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Oh bless you, it sounds like you are feeling really under the weather. Does the GP think your symptoms are related to an infection. Interestingly I had a rash too, other than that I felt quite well? I think if it was me, I would push for a second opinion given that you are feeling so anxious and if nothing else it would help with your feelings of anxiety xx

  • I hope you're feeling ok av123 I know how awful the anxiety is but I think push for further tests because you're the one dealing with this everyday and you need to know what's going on! you've got this! xx

  • hi Riley

just thought I'd let you know my biopsy day is June 21st a little while away but because it's not urgent and I've paid to go private but I'll be so happy to have this thing out of my neck! I'm really having some dark thoughts about it had a cry with my mum yesterday thinking they'll send it off and find all sorts. However she's reasurred me it's always been there and she remembers me being sick as a kid and me saying my lump is there again in my neck and how sickly I was as a child constant sore throats coughs you name it.  But the lymph node has had no growth still same little pea size it was when I found it nearly 5 weeks ago Well I say 5 weeks but my mum says years but I had a night sweat the other night panicked and realised I had four cans of red bull and vodka that day so that was defiantly it but yeah been battling with my thoughts a lot these days but I keep reminding myself if it was something serious lymphoma in my age group grows very rapidly! Hope you're well and feeling positive!

  • Hi Emily

I have my ENT consultation tomorrow and I'm going to try to ask for comparison scans in 2-3 months time. Do you have private health insurance or is the biopsy affordable? My lymph is still the same with no change at all, although I do have a headache and sore throat, no doubt linked to the emotional rollercoaster this journey has been and a combination of work pressure. My friend is a doctor who used to be an ENT surgeon, he seemed to be assured by my results, which seem to be similar to yours. Is it too rude to ask your age range? It would be good to set up a WhatsApp group if that's allowed within the forum T's and C's xx

  • Hi Riley,

Sharing personal details, such as phone numbers, is not allowed on the forum but you can share such information via private messaging. To find out more and how to get started just click here.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you Steph, it's good to know that there is a private messaging facilitity, I definitely hadn't realised.  Also thank you for confirming the terms and conditions xx

  • So ENT follow up today, I was assured that I am in a low category for ENT cancers, I asked for additional regarding these risks and it is apparently linked to age, smoking and drinking habits. The Doctor said that my lymph node is fibrous and would never go down. He kindly agreed to follow up with a further ultrasound in a few months time. I've added a photo as I feel I've got to know you, I have also sent friend requests now I know how to do them. How is everyone? Xxx
