Groin lump

Hi. I’m going to sound like a raving hypochondriac, I’m sure. I was hospitalised and on IV antibiotics with a swollen lymph node abscess ( size of a golf ️ ball) just after Christmas for 5 days-I’d had it for three weeks and had taken two weeks of antibiotics. I returned around   9 days later ( and after 9 days more of oral antibiotics) when it started to seep pus but yet again  an I and D couldn’t be performed as there was not enough pus. I was given an outpatients appointment for March 24 , 2019. While in hospital, I had blood tests, physical exams, ultrasound and upper body ct scan and they kept saying it was an infection though they couldn’t find the source, neither could I remember anything untoward happening. The time I returned the doctor took a sample of the pus. All the doctors i saw seemed perplexed by it and said that they are not usually as big as mine was. Slowly , the lump reduced but on the very night of the day I went to the GP to discuss another lump on inner thigh on other leg, the lump started to swell again. GP thought new lump was a lipoma but told me to tell consultant next week as it was on lymphatic system and gave me antibiotics for the first lump. They seem to be controlling it but it’s still there and it’s hard and itchy. Why I’m really worried is that three weeks ago I had an outbreak of what I assumed was eczema ( I’ve always had itchy skin). GP said it looked like an allergic reaction and gave me steroid cream. It’s better but I’m still itching and on parts of the body where I don’t normally get rashes. I’ve read about lymphoma and I’m really concerned about the persistence of the lump and the itching. I’ll wait till next week to see the doctor as an outpatient but I’m very worried, as I feel very well otherwise.

  • Hi Nh1,

Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry to hear about these troubles you've been having. I can understand there must be a lot of worry and concern here. It sounds like you are getting some good support from your medical team and it's good to hear you have another appointment booked.

It might be a good idea to make a small note each day about any changes you notice, so that you can use this to track any patterns and also as extra information for when you see your doctor.

Do make sure you ask any questions you have to your doctor and that you maximise the time you have with them.

I hope your appointment goes well. I also hope you find this forum a useful place to post, and hopefully some others will be along soon to offer some words of support, especially if anyone has similar experience.

    Wishing you the best.

  • Hi, just a query. I had my appointment with the specialist who examined the original swelling and the newer one on my other leg. He said my bloods, cultures and CT scans were fine and said it must be some kind of infection. I asked specifically about lymphoma and he said it wasn’t that and it is something looked for as it’s always at the back of doctors’ minds. He told me to come back and three months when he’d take a biopsy to find out the cause if it was still there. It’s been a month now and the swelling is still there though it’s small when I wake up but gets bigger during the day. He said it might fluctuate.  I told him about the rash I was having and he seemed unconcerned -perhaps I should have said itch- but I’m still concerned. I’d like to think if it were something very sinister he’d be more concerned or more scans, etc , would have been booked but I’m still letting it nag at me. Should I be so worried?
