Getting a diagnosis of throat/oral cancer

Hello,

I was wondering if someone can point me in the right direction.

In November 2018, I started with a persistent sore throat and the feeling of having something stuck in my throat like a lump. I also had a few patches on the back of my throat. I went to the GP where they said it was a simple sore throat and it will go on it’s own, did a strep throat test which was negative and concluded that the patches were cobblestone throat and again would go on there own.

After 2 weeks, I returned to the GP with the same symptoms where they referred me to an ENT specialist. In Dec 18. He examined me and I had the camera up my nose and down my throat and he said I was suffering with stress and anxiety causing the globus sensation and silent reflux. Prescribed me with some lansoprazole to go away with which haven’t made any difference whatsoever. I noticed a small white patch on my left tonsil and also a small white/yellow patch on the side of my tongue (no bigger than a taste bud at the moment). I have visited the dentist also and mentioned these but get the same response of “it’s no concern”.

I am still suffering with the same symptoms, I have been back to my GP and have been told to have a fasting blood test in 2 weeks time. Has anyone had any other experiences of being diagnosed with everything before reaching the actual diagnosis and how long did it take? I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall when trying to explain how I feel and my symptoms.

I don’t know if it makes any difference but I did have high grade cells removed from my cervix in the summer of 2017 so now I don’t know if I am just putting 2 and 2 together

Sorry for my ramble lol

  • Hi there

I've had issues with my throat since the end of Jan and it's now the middle of September and I still haven't had a diagnosis. I had a sore throat that lasted a week then it went, came back then it went again (no fever) but overtime it worsened, it was painful. The pain has moved to different parts of my throat which is strage. It only affects my glands and ears now not the back of my throat or tonsils... but sadly tonsils still look awful and overtime I've got orange spots at the back of my throat which I think is flamantion maybe cobblestone?

When my throat wasn't shifting I contacted my GP and I was prescribed with penicillin for tonsillitis. Didn't work so  I thought I had an allergy to my cat as I've never had a cat before so I was prescribed with fexofenidone (think that's how you spell it). It definitely helped my sore throat for couple of months but then I stopped taking them in the middle of July as I was experiencing chest pains and shortness of breath. A few days later from not taking them my throat came back sore but mainly my glands and ears that were affecting me. I've nagged to my gp countless times to be seen, I've probably contacted them about 7/8  times throughout  this year and because of covid I'm not classed as an amergnacy. Like what do you class as an amergnacy these days...?!
Back to July time I contacted my GP, had to wait for my call consultation and I said "I'm done, I want this seen ASAP, sick of paying for precriptions every months for nothing to work." The doctor said she will requested an appointment to see an ENT specialist at my local hospital.
I received a text to fill out an appointment sheet which was fully booked, so I had to wait a week and if they don't contact me I have to contact them. I contacted them and the receptionist said I'm on the waiting list,  it'll be some time till I get seen. I waited 3 weeks and contacted them again and mangaged to get a consultation call appointment.

25th August) the doctor doesn't think it's an allergy so I've scraped the tablets and I was told in my letter that the doctor would like to see me for a face to face consultation in two months. He prescribed me with Omeprazole and a bottle of gaviscon for my chest pains. I mangaged to book another appointment as I had some questions (14th sep) The  prescription is working to a point but soon after my call in sep I'm starting to feeling a lil off again with my glands and ears but I can't complain as  I've felt much worse months and months ago.  He doesn't think it's serious but I beg to differ.. you can't tell over the phone!! But the doctor said the same thing as the last call which was he'd see me within two months... I'm loosing my mind like why is it taking so long?!!  After my spat with my GP in July I was told by a doctor that because I'll be referred to see an ENT specialist now that they aren't going to see me... so I lost my crap and said "I've had this for far too long, I'd feel more at ease if it was just looked at already" so she sighs and said she'd book me in to be seen. The doctor said she couldn't feel anything abnormal, was booked in for some blood tests by a nurse and they came back clear.

so now I'm at this stage id most likely be seen by the end of this year if I'm lucky... I'm only 24 and I feel like because of my age they aren't bothered

  • Hi all

well my husband was diagnosed with stage 1 throat cancer. If it wasn't for the doctor finally referring him I doubt he would've found out so quick.

His sore throat and ear pain went this is because the cancer had grown through the nerve in his throat apparently.
He had a 6 week intense course of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy which made him very ill. He has a tube into his stomach for nutritional drinks as he couldn't eat. He had lost his taste too which is a side effect. Bloods done weekly and at the hospital daily.
Now his treatment has finished and he hopes to get the all clear fingers crossed we should find out in October.

Please don't loose hope just ask too get a second opinion as this is your right to.

I do feel it is worse trying to get to see a doctor now than during lockdown and I do sympathise with people trying to get seen.

I will update on his next consultant appointment to see if the cancer has gone.

    Take Care

  • Hi there

I'm so sorry to hear, I was hoping it wasn't anything serious but I'm glad he's been looked at probably and he is in the right hands. It's good that he was seen sooner rather than later and I hope the treatment has worked, fingers crossed. Wishing your husband all the best and I hope you both can recover from this,  keep fighting! <3

It's difficult trying to get seen... I had hoped I was seen by the ENT specialist already but with everything going on I've been pushed to one side and I feel like my age plays a big part in this. I'm trying to stay positive but I do have the fear that it is also throat cancer.  My current doctors have done everything they could so they've passed me on to see an ENT specialist at my local hospital so it's down to the hospital now. Everything is done via call consultations before a doctor decides to see you which I think is ridiculous because you can't be diagnosed over the phone... I've wanted my throat checked probably since March, so it's been a long wait when this all started in January. I'll be calling the ENT reception on  Monday to see if I'll get seen within a month like I was told but I have little hope.

    Take care!

  • Hiya, I'm wondering a year and half down the line what happened with your symptoms and how you are?
I have the cobblestone throat, It started as patches initially then bumps appeared. I also have awful holes in my tonsils that appeared earlier in year and getting awful tonsil stones (gross I know), but on top of this I've also found a big growth on side of my tongue and noticed red dots on roof of mouth.
I'm terrified, I got diagnosed with ME at the start of the year as I suffer with awful fatigue and intolerance to chemicals that got has got really bad in the last year.
I went to see the dr and she was really dismissive, said she thought it was silent reflux causing the cobblestones but didn't explain the variety of things going on and Dr Google not overly helpful

  • Hi

have been having sore throats and it is difficult to swallow. I am not sleeping because my nose is so stuffed up. I have looked online and I think its is an infection. I also have a swelling at the right side of my neck.  I have had blood tests and hope to hear early next week. My dr has referred me to ENT.

Have also had absences when I drop off, but can hear everything around me. I can't move or respond for abt 2 mins. This might be something else! I am lucky that my dr has seen me, but I have been telling her for ages.

I hope everyone has the right results so that they can have the right treatment.

Symptoms online show either strep throat or symptoms of the meds I am on. I have gum boils as well.

  • Hi there.

So after doing research and waiting months and months to even try to be seen,  I thought my symptoms where cobblestone too because the photos online looked the same, I noticed orange bumps on the back of the throat and under my tongue... I think the look of my throat worried me more than the discomfort I've been in because the look of my throat worsened but the pain when it all started in January eased ish overtime... I'm in less pain but have more discomfort from time to time. I nagged to my hospital that I wanted this properly looked at since I've had this problem in Jan and luckily after I  was eventually  seen in October. It was a waist of a journey, I was there for 45mins to have a 5 min chat with the doctor I've had previous phone appointments with. He had a quick look in my throat with a light and said "nothing to worry about I've seen this all before." And basically said I have a small mucus retention cyst...

never in my life have I heard of that or explained well on what it meant, so I've had to google this all on my own. Before being told my some what "final diagnoses/not" I've been prescribed with tablets from the very beginning...  I was on penicillin for so long as I thought I had allergies to my new cat but in July I was getting shortness or breath and light chest pains. July onwards  I was waiting to have my first call from the hospital, when I had my call from hospital I was prescribed with omeprazole, I thought it was working but overtime made more problems for me. I was prescribed with gaviscon on top to help and also had a Avamys nasal spray. I think being on so many tablets overtime has caused more harm than good,  the symptoms haven't gone completely, ill still get chest pains from time to time, my nose feels heavy if that makes sense and my glands still feel irritated from time to time. After my appointment I was done with it all... I said to myself I'm not taking anymore tablets because it's costing me so much and it's not got rid of my actual problems. So I decided to keep using  my nasal spray instead and the "cysts" as the doctor called it has gone down and that was the first time I noticed something has changed since the very beginning. I still get sore glands especially in winter months... I have no idea if I have a sinus problem or I'm now a prown to infections because of that one sore I had at the beginning of the year that may have caused this all to happen idk...

My throat is still red as anything and I doubt that'll go back to normal. Again my glands get irritated easily which effects my ears a bit and my nose...

I'm still figuring this out on my own sadly as I've given up with my GP and hospital.  I've sadly ran out of my nasal spray which I'm lucky enough to get a repeat prescription but that's the only thing that has made a difference with the look of my throat which makes me think this whole thing could be down to sinus??
I hope this helps and sorry I've rambled aha! Stay safe!

  • Hey! Have you had any results with this? I'm experiencing very similar symptoms (cobblestones, tonsil stones, fatigue etc). Had it non stop since November. I've just had my bloods taken and waiting results x

  • Hi,

I have the exact same symptoms as some of you in here. I have a sore throat and I'm having difficulty with swallowing sometimes. I have swollen glands and lymph nodes all around my neck and have been getting such a sore neck. I have also noticed a lump in my nose which I think may be a polyp but I can now see a growth on the back of throat coming from that nostril and I was just wondering if anyone has ever experienced this and did you ever find out what it was?

  • I have all of these annoying and painful symptoms and it's been ongoing for about 6months now. I know it was ages away but did you get your bloods back? No dr will take it seriously. Thanks

  • Hi

sounds like your description is of me.. I had mri and was told I had bulges in my cervical spine C6C7 and pinched nerve. With degeneration of the disc. However I've now developed a lump in the back of my throat, antibiotics didn't work. So waiting for endoscopy.. I'm sure it's all connected, so try not to stress. But make sure you find time to go Drs. Your health is more important than anything else.
