Breast indentation

So I never usually get changed in front of a mirror but check for lumps and bumps when in the shower. Due to decorating I was in bathroom last week getting changed in front of the mirror when I noticed my right breast had a lovely indent about the size of a 50p  under my nipple and my nipple is turning slightly downwards. I have no lumps or bumps, a little bit of pain but it's been there for a few months after hubs bit it so I put it down to that. I have breastfed 5 babies so my boobs aren't as firm as they were in my 20s and I'm now 36.

I had hubby have a peek and he called GP for an urgent appointment which we got for a hour later. I was thoroughly examined by the female gp and she said she was extremely concerned and filled out an urgent referral form in front of me. There was quite a few bits of information that it required but what really scared me was she selected urgent cancer care from the drop menu. I have no idea how long it's been there as I never look at my breasts really so I'm absolutely terrified.

I have my appointment on Tuesday coming and I've read up on what to expect and the hospital have sent out an information sheet on what tests will be carried out if they think it is something worth looking at.

I've tried to convince myself it's a stretch mark, all be it a deep one, that with my age it's possibly sagging but realistically I'm a size 8 and have very small breasts as it is. I can't stop worrying about that drop down menu. I've recently lost my mum to cancer and I've just helped my babies through that. All the women in my family have had some form of cancer which has taken them and now I'm the last female. I am absolutely scared as what to expect and I'm trying my hardest not to panic.

Has anyone had an indent that wasn't cancer? I've searched to see if it could possibly be anything other than cancer but nothing comes up

  • I'm so glad i have found this reply........I think I have a small lump which I found in January, I now have noticed I have an indentation . I have a telephone appointment with my GP next week so I will go from there , fingers crossed all will be ok x

  • Hi ladies ,been reading all of your posts,I too am in a similar situation. Last night I was in the mirror looking at my breast and I lifted my arms above my head to check my breasts.i was really shocked my left breast  had changed  significantly. My skin was very puckered under my left breast an my nipple was indented, I had checked my breast  2 days before an nothing ?.I was shocked an worried .I have recently lost a big amount of weight an I assumed it could be due to that but why not the other breast as well. Rang gp this morning  an have a appointment  at 11 so fingers crossed. My big worry is that because all my maternal aunts have had breast cancer one of which died after a brave 7 year battle 2 years  ago.so try to think positively but shaking at the same time.

  • Hello Alliket and thanks for posting,

Breast changes often trigger a lot of worry especially when anyone has a family history of breast cancer, a lot of the time they don't turn out to be anything to worry about, but even so still need to be checked out.  I hope your GP has been able to help this morning.

If your GP wants you to go to the breast clinic try not to worry. These clinics see women with any sort of breast problems, not just cancer.

If you want to give us a call please do. Our Freephone number is 0808 800 4040 and we are around from Mon-Fri, 9-5.

    Take care,

    Julia

  • Hi everyone,

I'd like to say that this forum helped me a lot over the last few weeks as my wife found a large dent in her breast, 50cm long, and was seen the same morning by her gp and then given an emergency appointment at the breast clinic. She was told by her gp that it is a sign of an aggressive form of cancer and when my wife asked what else it could be she didn't give an answer.

I was so scared but she just carried on and said don't panick until we have to. Due to covid 19 there was and still is a back log in all departments of the NHS and the breast clinic is no exception. The emergency appointment was to be seen within 2 weeks but this turned into almost a month. During this waiting time anxiety was up and down throughout most days but she was so calm. We have two young children and she is only 32 and every scenario was flouting around in my head at some point. I did what most doctors tell you not to and googled...but I found this page. I read all these posts and it really helped my nervousness. I know it sounds slightly pathetic really because she was really strong and I fell to bits every time I thought about what might come.

So, we went to the breast clinic and she had the scans and everything was fine! Just a pull in the skin which has began to go back to normal now.

I found refuge reading the posts on here and hope that this little story helps others through the waiting period of uncertaintaty. I for one am not a fan of the waiting game, even with a happy ending. Good luck to all.

    Adam.

  • Hi Cat 1982 I'm wondering how you got on? I read your story but saw you replied a few times but didn't update on your news. I do hope it went well
