Breast indentation

So I never usually get changed in front of a mirror but check for lumps and bumps when in the shower. Due to decorating I was in bathroom last week getting changed in front of the mirror when I noticed my right breast had a lovely indent about the size of a 50p  under my nipple and my nipple is turning slightly downwards. I have no lumps or bumps, a little bit of pain but it's been there for a few months after hubs bit it so I put it down to that. I have breastfed 5 babies so my boobs aren't as firm as they were in my 20s and I'm now 36.

I had hubby have a peek and he called GP for an urgent appointment which we got for a hour later. I was thoroughly examined by the female gp and she said she was extremely concerned and filled out an urgent referral form in front of me. There was quite a few bits of information that it required but what really scared me was she selected urgent cancer care from the drop menu. I have no idea how long it's been there as I never look at my breasts really so I'm absolutely terrified.

I have my appointment on Tuesday coming and I've read up on what to expect and the hospital have sent out an information sheet on what tests will be carried out if they think it is something worth looking at.

I've tried to convince myself it's a stretch mark, all be it a deep one, that with my age it's possibly sagging but realistically I'm a size 8 and have very small breasts as it is. I can't stop worrying about that drop down menu. I've recently lost my mum to cancer and I've just helped my babies through that. All the women in my family have had some form of cancer which has taken them and now I'm the last female. I am absolutely scared as what to expect and I'm trying my hardest not to panic.

Has anyone had an indent that wasn't cancer? I've searched to see if it could possibly be anything other than cancer but nothing comes up

  • Hi

just read your post, and it’s made me question myself. About 2/3 weeks ago, I was getting ready for bed and noticed a fairly large indent on my right breast. I have recently lost quite a bit of weight, so didn’t pay too much attention to it. However, I do check it twice a day, to see if anything else has changed, but just seems the same. The breast is slightly saggier than the left, so I was thinking maybe that’s what’s caused the indent. I also thought it is probably stretch marks rather than marked skin, although the indentation is visible through a t-shirt (with no bra). I am in two minds whether to get it checked, as I can’t decide if it’s a proper dent or due to weight loss, and with all this coronavirus going on, seems rather unfair to trouble anyone, especially if it’s nothing.

Really don’t know what to do for the best.

    Thanks for reading

  • Hi and thanks for posting

Many people report changes in their breasts after weight loss but it's not possible to say whether this is the cause behind the indentation in your breast.

Although the GP surgeries are under pressure and it may be an initial telephone consultation, do ring the GP for further advice. They will be able to advise you whether to just monitor it for now until they are able to see you and examine the breast, or whether they will ask you to come in.

So do ring and I hope things settle down for you soon

    All the best

  • Hi

I too have found an in indent in left breast when bending over, I had an online call with GP today, who gave me a referral without sight of the indent.  I would suggest a consultation, they only way to know for sure is with a proper exam at a clinic.  I have an appointment on Thursday at a breast clinic, don't let coronavirus put u off, urgent matters are still being dealt with.

    Good luck, best wishes

  • So I had my appointment, mammogram and ultrasound were inconclusive on whats causing the puckering. Next week I have a breast MRI.  Consultant was lovely.

  • How did it all go?  Especially with the hospitals running differently due to corona?

I've been sitting on some symptoms through corona myself.  Before Christmas, I went to my GP with some eczema on my left nipple, but my GP thought it was due to my normal psoriasis.  Then, before lockdown, I noticed a strange angle on the contour of my breast.  Today I noticed an indent, so phoned the GP and had a video consultation.  She's referred me under the two week wait, but said it may take up to a month to be seen because of everything that's going on.

  • Hi

I went To a small private hospital for ultra sound, I was then referred for an MRI.  My consultant was convinced that something was causing the puckering and indent, which is why when the ultra sound didn't show anything I was sent for an urgent the MRI.  I was very lucky and she was very surprised that an indent like mine had no cause!! Hospitals are taking all precautions necessary to safe guard on covid.  Good luck x Dee

  • That's super news. I'm so glad you had a good outcome.

After reading through this thread, I was reading about Coopers Ligaments and now believe I have something going on with them, maybe perimenopausal changes. One of the examinations a website suggested was kneeling on all fours, looking for changes that way. Sure enough, I can see changes in both breasts that way, so I don't feel quite as worried as I did earlier.

  • Hi Macca, Can I ask how you got on. I’m actually the same as you! Worried and not. My H doesn’t see it but I took a pic and it’s clearly there!
  • Hi, I think you probably know your breasts better than anyone, and if you have noticed any change, you are right to get it checked. Have you shown the gp?

For me, I was referred under the 2 week wait but I was seen in less than 2 weeks. I had a physical examination, mammogram and ultrasound of both breasts and was thankfully told it was hormonal changes. Apparently milk glands change to fat as we get older, and my fat isn't being distributed evenly - story of my life!

So, go get it checked out, and be reassured that breast dents don't always mean the worst.

    Good luck x

  • Hi Sophia,

I have been watching it for the last 2 weeks just to be sure it's actually not from clothing.

I will be making an appointment with the GP on Monday as it's clear in pictures and still there.

I'm glad you're results were good-fingers crossed my fat stores are like yours.

    Thanks for the reply.
