breast clinic this evening

i have an appointment with the breast clinic today after being referred by my gp as i have a hard lump in my right breast. i havent slept and im really nervous i was wondering if anyone could talk me through what will happen today and how long you wait for the results or is it a same day thing?

thanks all xx

  • Morning, sorry you have found a lump, try and hold on to the fact that 8/9 out of 10 lumps are innocent.....

The breast clinic is a swift operation, this is my experience....

first had chat with doctor who felt for the lump and marked it with a pen, then it was off to have a mammogram ( they did 3 ) then off for an ultrasound, all along they told me it was nothing to worry about ( I think they say this to everyone) then I had to go back for a core biopsy....2 weeks later I had a phone call to come in for results...it turned out to be cancer but I am now on a treatment plan and getting it sorted...

Try not to read too much into anything....there is a protocol to follow, try and take someone with you for moral support.....

goodluck.....and let us know how it goes xxxx

  • Thanks for the reply!! im so sorry about your diagnosis i hope that youre treament plan is going well and that youre feeling okay within yourself! i think the idea of more waiting is whats stressing me out the most cause ive had two weeks waiting for today it just seems to be on my mind all the time! i will let you know how i get on just want it done now!! xxx

  • Yes, totally agree, it's the waiting that screws you up as it gives your mind time to go freewheeling! Once you know what you're dealing with you just have to crack on with it...

willl be thinking of you Tonight xx

    Hi,

Welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with your breast. Waiting for results is always scary, but this should get a little easier once you get your results.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 9 years. My initial visits to the breast clinic were very similar to Marlyn's. I spoke to my consultant and told him about my findings. He then examined my breasts and sent me for a Mamogram. I was then sent for an ultrasound and had a biopsy. I went back a week later and got the result.

If there is something very obvious, your consultant may tell you of his suspicions there and then, but you still have to wait for the results to come back to be certain.

I hope that your appointment goes well for you. Do please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • just back from the clinic now, the doctor examined the lump and took family history ect, and agreed with my findings that it felt quiet hard but she didnt scan it today but instead said i will need to come back for a biopsy at the end of this week and to wait for an appointment in the post in the next few days and that i will have a meeting with her on the 8th of march to get results. does that sounds all normal? she didnt tell me not to worry and didnt really say anything to lean to it being positive or negative i know im probably reading too much into it but thats the latest!!

    thanks again xxx

    Hi,

I'm sorry that you didn't get your tests today, but am glad to hear that you will have a biopsy by the end of the week. This sounds perfectly normal and, I am glad to hear that you will get your results on 8th March.

You will probably feel even more scared after you have had your biopsy and before you get the results.  This is the stage that most people describe as the worst stage of their cancer journey. Although I have had cancer for 9 years, I have recently been diagnosed with melanoma on my face and am due to have surgery a week today. Despite having come to terms with 2 bouts of breast cancer, this has come as a bolt out of the blue and, I cannot claim to be as accepting of this as I should be. Most of us tend to look at the wort case scenario  as our minds work overtime. Fortunately, this seldom turns out to be the case.

I am hoping that , by 8th March, we will both have some good news to celebrate. Are you taking someone with you to your consultation? It is always a good idea to take someone to all of your appointments, especially when you are expecting to get results. It is also sensible to draw up a list of questions for your consultant before each appointment.

    Fingers crossed for 8th.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

I am so sorry to hear of your situation that must be so distressing and such a rollercoaster of events and emotions, sending all my love and i hope that the sugery next week goes as well as it can go!! Yes, my mind is definetly running away from me the thing that seems to be haunting me the most is that if it was something i would have to tell my family and how that would afffect them. I will bring my partner to the appointment on the 8th as youve suggested i think thats a good idea and i will try to think of as many questions as possible its just hard to know whats sensible and whats irraitional at this stage as it still could be anything! xxx

  • Hello, straight in with biopsy then, I had a core biopsy and it was completely painless and quick, I think it's good to go straight in, there's no waiting for mammogram results, you will get a definitive answer on the 8 th....fingers crossed Hun, let us know? Xxxx

    Hi,

Your questions will change from one visit to the next, as you learn more about the type and grade of your cancer. Try to involve your partner in drawing up your questions too, as he may think of questions that haven't occurred to you. Don't worry whether they are sensible or irrational for the moment. All this is new to you, so anything that comes to mind is important to you.

Cancer is always a rollercoaster ride. I am just keen to get this surgery behind me and, to know exactly what I am dealing with this time. I won't know this until my results come back from pathology.

Will be thinking of you on 8th and hope that it all goes well.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi again Jolamine and Maryln, i went in for my biopsy today and when the lady did the ultrasound she told me that my lump was of a funny/irregular shape and actually showed me it on the screen it sort of looked like a kidneybean. anyway she pressed on and did the core biopsy but i cant shake the emphasis that she placed on it being an irregular shape, is that bad news??

Thanks to both of you lovely ladies for all your help and hope youre both keeping well

    xxx
