24, 6cm lump, breast clinic referral

Hello! Very surprised to find myself posting in this forum - but then, I expect everyone who finds themselves here feels the same. I only started doing breast self exams a few weeks ago, just shy of my 24th birthday, and thought my boobs felt different but didn't know what I was looking for. When I identified a part of my left breast that felt firmer on 2 separate self exams, I decided to get checked. I was in front of a GP within 2 hours and will be in a breast clinic within 2 weeks (5th March). Good old NHS.

But I'm scared. The GP said the lump was large, 4cm by 6cm, and now I know it's there I can't stop touching it and analysing the feel. It feels like it's under fat, which makes telling the texture difficult, but it's definitely quite firm. The GP said he 'thinks it moves' but didn't seem too sure. He also said he suspected fibrocystic cysts because of my age, but that doesn't actually fit my age or the size of the lump, which is either more likely either a fibro adenoma or very bad news. (I know, I shouldn't have googled this intensely).

I don't know what I'm asking really. Because of the possibility of a biopsy, my boyfriend is taking me to the clinic and will wait with me, but I think I just want some words of comfort or advice to carry me through the next couple of weeks. I know I have no more right to be told its not cancer than anybody else, so I think I also want to get out of my own head, and remember that this is something thousands of other women face every year.

  • Hi Busyhappy,

Sorry you're going through this worry, but great to hear you were able to get in front of a GP so quickly.  They've done the right thing in referring you to the Breast Clinic.  Although people often assume Breast Clinics are just for cancer, they are specialists in all sorts of breast conditions.

As you'll already know the vast majority of lumps turn out to not be cancer, and there is no reason to think you will be any different, there is every chance yours won't be cancer and that's what I'm hoping for.  I did have rather large fibroadenomas in my teens and 20s, but I do know other people that had large cysts then too.  It's an age where our breasts are still changing so much and lots of issues arise.

As with all lumps, it's most likely not cancer, but I realise that probably won't put your mind at rest, only the definitive news will do that.

If the worst does happen we are all here.  Let us know how you get on?

  • Hi. Just wondering how you got on with your results? I hope all is well. I'm terrified waiting for my biopsy. Sara
