Chronic Sore Throat

Hi All,

Just after a bit of advice, I've had a sore throat (especially when swallowing) for nearly 4 months now. Been to the docs numerous times, had 2 complete full blood tests (for all sorts), ultra sound of the throat/glands and also seen an ENT specialist who put a camera down my throat. All of which came back fine... But still the pain is there. Good old aniexty is 0telling me it still must be something serious although with all the tests which have been done i should be confident there isn't.

So question is, has any one had a viral infection which wouldn't shift/go away. Or could the anxiety just be causing this all along?

Many thanks all in advance

  • I have had this for four months. Persistent sore throat, worse on waking up. I'm concerned about HPV because I already had HR HPV in the past and cell changes. Crazy that they don't do throat swabs for it!! I'll try the vitamin D someone on here suggested thank you for sharing your experiences.

  • I have had throat issues since 27th Dec 2019. the doctor tried 3 courses of antibiotics. no difference. referral to ENT. no reply. then thinks got so much worse and felt something pop in my throat. i had 3 referrals to ent and the doctor got the date for the following week sent to her and then 2 days later the hospital canceled it. after 6 months told nasal rinse and Gaviscon advanced as well as lanzoperole 60mg. still no different. after 9 months I had a face-to-face and camera down. he said GERD. referred to endoscopy who said esophagus good 12 biopsies taken. throat and voice box covered in ulcers. but no sign of hiatus hernia or GERD and roof of the mouth. referral back to Ent. that was the face-to-face that I had at 9 months. but now here I am April 2021 and chronic throat issues and now 2 months of front neck pain. I was supposed to have an ent apt again in Jan but covid. and the ENT was completely useless and tried to pass me off to anyone else but he does not want to check or gown up. and I am in chronic pain with it and dont know where else to go.

  • Hey Sds1959, welcome to the club (not sure anyone wants to be a member of this club tho!).

That sounds really awful. Were they able to at least treat the ulcers, even if they cant find the cause?

UPDATE: it's been 2 weeks since i tried @Big.Fella's suggestion of Beconaze. Unfrotanetly it hasnt made any difference. I'll keep going for another week or 2 just to be sure but not expecting much.

Something else I've tried in the last 2 weeks is I bought a massage gun (I got a Theragun G3 on sale, but there's plenty of other similar ones). I got it thursday of last week and thought I'd discovered something amazing. The next day i felt better than i have in months. My throat was still sore of course, but everything else (headaches, fatigure, congestion) was much better, so it made the throat less debilitating.

...however, it only lasted until Monday, and i'm writing this on Wedneday when thigns are back to the same. So i'm not sure if the massage gun did anything at all and it was just a coincidence (it's not uncommon for me to have a few good days randomly where most symptoms disappear temporarily).

ANyway thought I'd post it here in case someone else wants to give that a go and see if it helps them. There's a certain logic to it that if you have neck pain, it could exacerbate the throat pain too.

Next week i will be moving house, which I'm hoping will prove once and for all if this is an environmental thing (mould, allergies etc) or not. I'll post back here with results!

  • Thank you for coming back to me Koonga1

It was the gastro doctor that did the scope that ent requested and he saw erosive nasal passages and below the vocal cords but he referred me back to ent and I saw him which was the first time last Sept 2020 he did the nasal endoscopy and didn't see anything but the throat is so much deeper the gastro doctor said that was not his field which is why he referred me back. and I was supposed to have had another follow-up and nothing. the throat since Dec 27th, 2019, and the nasal problems since Oct 2019., and for the last 2 months, I have had so much pressure on the front of my neck right in front of where I get the pain inside. just don't know what else to do. I have lost confidence in the Ent man he had done his best not to look at all. but i had a blood test taken by the doctor for unrelated problem and now have low red blood cell count and have to have another blood test next week. but this throat and nose and neck stuff is worrying me now.

  • Hey Sds1959, how'd you get on with the blood tests? and i totally get what you mean about losing confidene with ENT. I went to one the other day and he seemed very nonchalont about everything, and clealry wasnt listening to me as he kept suggesting things that i already told him i'd tried not 2 mins earlier.

I do have a partial update on mine which i wanted to share in case it helps (chronic sore throat + congestion for 2+ years).

4 weeks ago i moved to a new house, completely opposite end of town. My symptoms have not disappeared but I'm having A LOT more good days than bad. Before I might have 2-3 good days before 1-2 weeks of bad days, whereas now things are flipped and i'm having mosting good days.

Too early to say if it's coincidnce or if my throat issues were environmental to my old house, but so far it's looking good. I'll have to give it a couple more months before i know.

One thing we found when moving out of the old house is that we had a much bigger rat problem than we realised. Clearing out wardrobes and cupboards uncovered some floor boards that had a gap in them and there was a lot of rat droppings. It's possible i was having a reaction to them, though i may never know for sure.

The only other unique thing about the old house was that it was a very industrial area with lots of factories, whereas the new house is quite remote in the hills out of the city.

Anyway, just thought i should post here for posterity in case it helps someone in the future. I will post another update in a few months by which time i should have more of a difinitive answer as to whether the move helped or not!

  • Hello Good morning

I have the same symptoms as you and this has been going on now for along time with the pain

I was just wondering if you have come to any conclusion or found and answers to you problem?

any advice would be much appricated

    Thank you

    Shane

  • Hi debsy is your throat and. breathless any better cause I’ve had the same for 15 months now mine started after a sinus infection and having to wear a face mask just makes it unbearable

  • Hi Skarlett, thanks for asking!

The throat seems to have calmed down - but the breathlessness comes and goes. OK for a few days and then it returns, and really struggle. Still not really been diagnosed and not seen the doctor as they have been hiding behind phones and impossible to get an appointment,

I have ectopic heartbeats and was seen about those in Jan 2020 but nobody could understand what was causing them, but told they were harmless. Think it could be post viral or menopause.  I tried HRT last year but had to come off it as it made me feel worse.

I too have real problems wearing a mask, and only do when have a medical appointment - I have an exemption but have rarely been out anywhere since this covid hell started,   I just keep my distance!  I have had both my vaccinations now (Oxford one).

I do have an ENT appointment this coming Friday (which has been put off since April 2020) due to a lumpy growth on my right inner septum.  I am dreading it.

I hope you will get help soon and can start to feel better, but it seems a long long road ahead sadly.  I wish you the best of luck xx

  • So glad I found this thread have had sore throat and post nasal drip on and off since January blood tests are negative awaiting a follow up doctors appointment but my mum died of oesophageal carcinoma so am very worried

  • I wish you the best of luck - I hope you can get that appointment - it seems to be very difficult to get to see someone at the moment, as it's all phone appointments, and they are pretty useless when you want someone to actually examine you.
