Chronic Sore Throat

Hi All,

Just after a bit of advice, I've had a sore throat (especially when swallowing) for nearly 4 months now. Been to the docs numerous times, had 2 complete full blood tests (for all sorts), ultra sound of the throat/glands and also seen an ENT specialist who put a camera down my throat. All of which came back fine... But still the pain is there. Good old aniexty is 0telling me it still must be something serious although with all the tests which have been done i should be confident there isn't.

So question is, has any one had a viral infection which wouldn't shift/go away. Or could the anxiety just be causing this all along?

Many thanks all in advance

  • Hello Mumma123! Everyone here has slightly different symptoms so i can speak for all, but for me it's always there 100% of the time, but some days it's extremely minimal to the point I can easily forget about it.

I guess it's more of a spectrum, where it might fluctuate between a 2/10 – 10/10 in terms of discomfort, but I can't remember the last time it was a 0/10.

Curious if this matches with others' experience.

Personally my #1 theory for myself is that it's environmental. I'm moving house in mid April so very curious to see if it gets better after the move!  I will post back here either way for posterity!

  • Hi everyone. Just joined this thread as I am worried about the really sore throat I've been suffering for nearly 6-8 months now.

I've suffered with ear infections for most of my adult life (I'm 49) due to a perforated ear drum and I don't want to have an operation to cover the perforation up as ENT say a sneeze could just dislodge it. I've also found my sinuses to be regularly blocked.

About 7 months ago I was driving and suddenly found I was having to swallow constantly to clear the back of my throat.

This has continued to carry on for months now and as a result I have got really bad sore throat and area around the neck glands.

Ive been on nasal sprays for sinus issues for a couple of weeks which have eased the nasal pressure and heavy ness around my eyes, but not the sore throat, which is incredibly sore and painful.

I genuinely worry that I've got something seriously wrong and would welcome any advice. Thanks

  • Hey Big.Fella! yeah i hear you, it's amazing how something like a sore throat can really ruin your health, even if everything else is OK.

Have you had any consulations with doctors? The first step is usually a blood/urine test, if that doesnt show anytihng then ask for a referral to an ENT who can look closer either with a camera and get some scans done if needs be.

I think the first priority is to rule out the serious stuff, at least if you can be fairly confident it's nothing super sinister then it might relieve some anxiety, even if it doesnt necessarily improve your quality of life in the short term.

Post any updates or information here though, there's a lot of people – inlcuidng myself – with similar issues and pooling our experiences might be help someone!

  • Thanks.

Believe it or not but the issue with my throat seems to be subsiding a bit.

ive been on this nasal spray for a couple of weeks now and it's made a massive difference all round to how my head is feeling.

  • Hi Big Fella

What is the name of the nasal spray?

  • Interesting! Sounds positive. How long did it take for the nasal spray to start working? Like, did you feel no difference for the first 1-2 weeks and then it started working, or was it just very gradual?

i tried nasonex early on but didn't feel any effect so I stopped after about a week or two. Perhaps I should keep trying.

  • It was Beconaze.
Still have a little bit of a niggle at the back of the throat but so far it seems to have done the trick.

  • Probably 2-3 weeks before I noticed the difference.

I can occasionally still feel a bit of an ache , but nowhere near what it was like before.

Not sure if it was all just linked together, if it was anything to do with Covid , or what caused it.

Oh, that's a pity.  I've been on that for years due to my chronic sinusitis, but it's not helped my sore throat.

  • I'll buy some Beconaze today and give it a go for a couple of weeks. I've tried every other antihistomine so I dont have high hopes, but def worth a try. I'll post back here with results in a couple of weeks.

EDIT: Update here. spoiler alert: it didnt work :(
