Chronic Sore Throat

Hi All,

Just after a bit of advice, I've had a sore throat (especially when swallowing) for nearly 4 months now. Been to the docs numerous times, had 2 complete full blood tests (for all sorts), ultra sound of the throat/glands and also seen an ENT specialist who put a camera down my throat. All of which came back fine... But still the pain is there. Good old aniexty is 0telling me it still must be something serious although with all the tests which have been done i should be confident there isn't.

So question is, has any one had a viral infection which wouldn't shift/go away. Or could the anxiety just be causing this all along?

Many thanks all in advance

  • Hi janelarambla.  Welcome to the forum.

I'm not a doctor and I have no medical qualifications.

It is possible to have acid reflux while sleeping and to be completely unaware of the symptoms. This might explain your sore throat.  I know because this seems to be happening to me.

You might like to revisit your GP and discuss the possibility of acid reflux and what you can do about it. Your GP might be happy to prescrible a Proton Pump Inhibitor to reduce stomach acid. Your GP may also suggest you raise the head of the bed, and make sure you have nothing eat or drink in the 3 hours before sleeping.  If you try these measures for a few months and nothing changes then at least you can tell your next consultant!

  • Hi and thanks.

I have been taking Omeprazole which is a proton pump inhibitor for a long time because I'm taking a slow release anti-inflamatory. I've never had acid reflux.

The view of my throat from the inside showed no soreness or redness below my arytenoids. If it was acid reflux there would be inflamation further down my throat.

I also have a swollen tongue, swollen lips, mouth ulcers and the roof of my mouth is raw and on fire.

I don't think stomach acid could bypass my lower throat but get as far as my lips. I'm sure I would know about this if it was happening.

Immediately prior (the day before) the start of this chronic sore throat, I was found unconscious in my house with very serious carbon monoxide poisoning and taken to hospital by firemen and paramedics. The hospital (empty) 'forgot' to give me oxygen.

Clearly the two things are connected. Hypoxia has caused very high red cell/haemoglobin/haemotocrit levels giving me polycythemia.

I would just like someone give me so advice or treatment or medicine to get this fixed and stop denying there is anything wrong when clearly there is.

  • Hi

I got same each and everything you suffering since April 2020 but no cure even after 2 antibiotic courses. Acid reflux medicine finally got call from ent but again given 4 to 6 weeks time for camra check so paranoid what it is have you got any update

  • Hi I’m in a similar situation, I’ve had an on and off sore throat since Jan which has worsened overtime. I think from the end of Feb/ March I called my GP as I didn’t know what else to do. Been on a few antibiotics which did nothing.... mentioned I recently got a kitten so I didn’t know if that’s causing issues with my throat... I’ve been prescribed with allergy tablets which seems to ease the pain so I carried it on for a few months. July came, I stopped taking them as I was away from my house and ligit after a few days of not taking them, my throat felt horrid, ears were sore, I had shortness of breath and minor sharp pains in my chest. I carried on taking them soon after as they did ease the pain by a lot from when I wasn’t on anything. The annoying thing is the antibiotics seems to have worn off a bit as they don’t work as good as they did as I still get the littlest sore throat everyday but I keep taking them as they do help. when I was away and my throat worsened being off the antibiotics, I immediately called my GP and said this needs sorting out now. Due to the current situation I’m not classed as an emergency so they still weren’t going to see me face to face which is stupid!!! The doctor said she’d send a request to see and ENT specialist but by the time I got home I called my GP again and said I need to be seen as I nearly took myself to A&E out of panic! I was lucky enough to get an appointment but the lady who specialises throats wasn’t in so i had someone else. She didn’t feel anything abnormal then booked me in the next day for a nurse to do some blood tests. Came back all clear... I’ve had too follow up appointments to see an ENT specialist as they are seeing those for emergencies first and are fully book. 3 weeks I contacted them again and luckily I had a consultation call. The gentleman doesn’t think I have an allergy to my cat so now I’m more worried as I dont have any idea what it could be as I dread to hear if it’s sinister but he said I should receive a letter within two months for an examination. By then it’ll be 10 months, 10 months too long I think... It baffles me that I’ve waited this long and I still haven’t had this sorted and looked at probably. I’m only 24, I feel as though my GP and the ENT specialist isn’t seeing me right away due to my age idk.. I definitely regret smoking occasionally on silly nights out after a few drinks with my girlies as that doesn’t help and I think that’s why I’m worried incase I’ve caused this on myself.
  • Since April this year  have had a sore throat.   checked in on the NHS  web site and answered all the questions including checking tempeture whilst on line.   suggested  I visit GP. which I did. checked throath and glands.

Sent for blood tests .  Thoidrod and hot flushes 2 of the named blood investigations.  Results came back clear.

Pharmacist friend suggested  hayfever. Now taking Loratadine and nose spray.  I've never suffered wth hay fever before but theres always a first.

    Any suggesions

  • Hi there,

Just wanted to add another similar story as have been struck to the similarities between what I have read and experienced for the past 5 months. For the past 5 years of my life I have experienced brief instances where I would get severe throat pain. (on estimate 5 times a year at absolute lasting a maximum 2 weeks each time) Although the pain was very uncomfortable I always knew it would pass with adequate rest, vocally and physically and a soft, no solid food diet. Doctors said this wasn't abnormal and typically prescribed painkillers or throat spray and it always passed in time.

However, since May of this year when the pain sprung up yet again I have been completely unable to shake it. There is an extreme burning, uncomfortable sensation at the far back of my throat that I am always aware of and very rarely subsides, making swallowing difficult and speech not achievable without pain. To the point where not talking is the most comfortable but obviously restrictive option. It requires constantly drinking water to quell the pain at all. After multiple doctors visits and three endonoscopies, I have repeatedly been told the throat is red and like many others that this is likely due to acid reflux burning the throat itself. I have been prescribed Lansoprazole Gastro-Resistant capsules, Gaviscon, Nystan and completely removed all food and drink from my diet that would aggravate the reflux but still the pain remains as previous examples have also stated.

I do also feel self-conscious of the way others must percieve me for this situation as the doctors tend to act indifferently or insensitively and it's not something people can clearly see  but can have a massive impact on all aspects of life. At 22 years old, it's reduced my social life to being non-existent, made me have to quit work, losing my income and is having a massive impact on my current university course. I don't want to sound like I'm deriving satisfaction from the misfortune of others but I felt as if I had to post as finding this page has made me feel alot less alone in this struggle. I think it's really startling to realise how many people are having these issues during covid times. I really wish everyone on here the best and hope to hear any news back positive or otherwise on how you are all coping.

    Stay strong x

  • Omeprazole (similar to Lansoprazole) and Gaviscon don't do much to suppress my reflux.  I'm also not eating or drinking 3 hours before retiring, and I've raised the head of the bed, but the sore throat is still there.  It was really bad for about 6 weeks but recovered somewhat four weeks ago.  The only thing that helps at the moment are Vocalzone pastilles (recommended to singers and IMHO the best throat pastille out there).

More in desperation than in hope I'm awaiting delivery of a device called iQoro which is supposed to help reflux, but is eye-wateringly expensive.  I'll keep everyone posted on whether it actually does anything; I'm really doubtful, but I'm out of options.

  • Hi there iv sufferd with a chronic sore throte for over 3 years now been to see 5 ent doctors one of which was yesterday which I payed privert iv had barium swallow endoscopy mri scan with injection dye yet still no answer had cam up nose 4 times mine is a real harsh stinging burnig sensation it's that sore I can't help but swallow it hurts when I eat or drink yet when ent looked yesterday full exam and cam again  said all was normal this thing has took over my life the pain is so bad I don't want to eat cause it hurts started off not as bad but over the last few months it's got worse and worse now its on fire all the time not acid been on anti acids for a long time now even my tounge hurts I have had 3 years of not knowing what this is it's destroid me mentally feels like iv just eat the hottest curry and it's like that 24/7 mental health they put it down to thanks all anyone eles had pain this bad

  • Hi Joe83e.

Wow! I thought I had it bad, but you've got me beat.

I wouldn't assume that because you're on antacids you can't be suffering from reflux.  There are some people who think that antacids and Proton Pump Inhibitors actually make the gastric reflux worse, particularly when sleeping.

  • Hi there,

I have the exact same thing and I keep getting told it's acid reflux. My throat, mouth and tongue are constantly burning like I've eaten the hottest chillies  and no one understands how horrible it feels. Due to Covid no one will see me so GP diagnosed me over the phone and he just keeps upping omeprazole which isn't working.

I've had it since March every single day :(

My dentist referred me to oral hospital but it will take few months to get seen.
