Chronic Sore Throat

Hi All,

Just after a bit of advice, I've had a sore throat (especially when swallowing) for nearly 4 months now. Been to the docs numerous times, had 2 complete full blood tests (for all sorts), ultra sound of the throat/glands and also seen an ENT specialist who put a camera down my throat. All of which came back fine... But still the pain is there. Good old aniexty is 0telling me it still must be something serious although with all the tests which have been done i should be confident there isn't.

So question is, has any one had a viral infection which wouldn't shift/go away. Or could the anxiety just be causing this all along?

Many thanks all in advance

  • Hi to everyone on this forum,

I've been reading the replies to this for a while now, which probably hasn't done my anxiety loads, but for some reason gives me a little peace knowing there's others going through the same thing.

A year ago (May 2019) I had my first bout of serious tonsillitis leaving me in hospital on a drip ect. My throat was so painful/ swollen I struggled to swallow at all- treated with 2 weeks of clarithromycin and cleared up fine meaning I could go back to work. I ride racehorses for the day job so pretty physical. I then had another episode of the same thing in August, again clarithromycin cleared it up. I then had several more episodes of the same thing, in September, November and January. All treated with Clarithromycin. I had blood tests which just showed I was fighting an infection (antibiotics cleared it up anyway) and tested negative for glandular fever.

By November I had to quit my job and it's impossible to take so much time off and then get back to full fitness. Saw an ENT in January 2020 who said tonsillectomy wouldn't do anything as the problem Is why I'm getting the infections, not my tonsils which I agreed with. Had camera up nose down throat, NOTHING. I managed to then get back to work in February and a month in I then went very quickly downhill again. This time no sore throat but serious night sweats and pain in my collar bone and waist. Blood tested and everything showed inflammation (liver, spleen, kidneys ect) and then tested positive for glandular fever. Quit job again, THEN developed another throat infection which this time was treated with phenyl amoxicillin. Cleared up infection on back of the throat with 3 weeks worth, thought it was the end of it...

Lockdown due to COVID-19 aside, I have been stuck inside ever since March. The glandular fever obviously takes a long time but I am now left with this horrendous sore throat at the back/roof of my mouth which comes and goes every day. I also have pain in my jaw and ears, sesations of my glands being full but aren't swollen to touch. Antibiotics do nothing, paracetamol barely scratch the surface, I'm on acid reflux tablets to see if that's causing it, antihistamines to see if it's an allergy... NOTHING. I am so tired and fed up of all these sore throats. Been to doctors countless time's, had so many blood tests and nothing. At night is the worst. Eating I don't notice it.

starting to wonder if all the infections of last year have left me with permanent damage/ or do I actually have an underlying cancer of some sort. Pain isn't necessarily on tonsils anymore, area at back roof of throat/ nose is the worst and in my jaw.
this is all caused me horrendous anxiety and depression, and I know it's a vicous circle but I'm not getting any better! I'm 20 years old, can't work, given up my career with racehorses and having to live with grandma as lost my place where I lived!
    anyone any advice :(

hope everyone on here is feeling better and surviving better than me!

    many thanks

  • Hi Nataly_17

I am having the same problems as others here. A chronic deep throat rawness since Dec 19. and bloody nasal mucous since Oct19 and ear problems. my doctor has sent me to ENT referral and the first time no reply. she sent again in march and had a telephone consultation and I got dismissed. saying really we should put a camera down to look but that would not be good for us as we would have to gown up and not good for you. said try some medicine if no better return to the doctor and get a referral to get a camera down. well, the doctor did that 3 weeks ago. Monday 22nd June the doctors rang me with apt for today Monday 29th June to get a camera down and biopsy to check nothing naughty is going on. then Friday 26th June the hospital rang and said the clinic was cancelled and that someone would ring today with another apt. so this morning they rang and said as it is a new referral that the doctors had done it wrong and that I would have to have a telephone referral again as I did on 28th April and not an apt. I feel I am getting the runaround. my problem is no better than when it started and all they are doing is avoiding apts and so not to put a camera down. this was meant to be an urgent referral. and i feel the hospital is hiding from patients.

  • Hi Carey3

I am in exactly the same situation as you. started in Dec with the Throat deep rawness. and Nose Oct 19. and intermittent ear problems. 2 throat swabs negative. 2 courses of antibiotics. as I was under MAx FAX for mouth problems she prescribed Prednisolone for 4 weeks. slightly better came off and back to square one. ENT telephone apt. and double Lanzoperole and Gaviscon twice daily and nasal rinse twice a day. if no better in 6 weeks re-referral. did say I should have a camera down. supposed to have had apt today for tests that was arranged last Monday and the hospital cancelled it saying they would ring today with another apt. and today they rang and no apt have to have another telephone consultation. anything but put the camera down to see what is going on by the sound of it

  • Has anyone been checked for sleep apnea . That can cause soar throats .

  • Hi Pamela,

sorry to hear about your results but it does seem good to have the situation in hand and to work towards being cancer free in due time.

I'm currently awaiting the results of my throat biopsies & trying to stay relatively calm.

Do wish you all the very best.

  • Thank you for this information. It's interesting what vitamins can do

  • I have had a constant sore throat for 6 months now. I had a ct scan last week and within 2 days I got a letter saying I have to go for a face to face appointment to discuss the results. I wouldn't be so worried but we are in the middle of covid 19 and the ent department aren't seeing anyone unless it's an emergency!! My appointment is tomorrow I'm really worried !

  • Thank you for your post Smiles8181,

Many hospitals are getting back to near normal and some departments are now able to see their patients face to face. So try not to read too much into this, as I hate to say this, bad news can also be given over the phone too.

CT scan results are important and can often rule out cancer but if there is uncertainty then more scans or a biopsy may be needed. CT's on their own usually do not diagnose cancer.

Waiting for results can be really difficult so I hope you know more soon,

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

  • I had already had the consultation appointment and was told I would have another video call in 8 eeeks and the ct scan was just to rule out anything sinister. He didn't say I'd need to see them after he just said he would call me again in 8 weeks. I am on the vulnerable list for covid 19 so I rang to ask if it was necessary to attend the hospital ?. The receptionist checked to see if she could rearrange it as a video call, she said they aren't seeing anyone at the moment unless it's urgent so the department is pretty much empty anyway so I shouldn't worry about covid. Then she said "no the doctor has specifically requested a face to face". She said they aren't even seeing all people on a 2 week call back face to face so if he has requested to see me then he obviously needs to check something that can't be done on the phone so it's important I attend. It's just a bit odd because I got the letter to go in 2days after my scan. I had the scan on Sunday night and the letter was sent out Monday morning (received Tuesday) asking for me to go in today ! It's very very quick. And it's nhs not private that's some speed for nhs appointments! As far as I knew the scan was just a precaution and no mention of needing a follow up to discuss it or anything he just said he would call me in 8 weeks it's very odd !
