Chronic Sore Throat

Hi All,

Just after a bit of advice, I've had a sore throat (especially when swallowing) for nearly 4 months now. Been to the docs numerous times, had 2 complete full blood tests (for all sorts), ultra sound of the throat/glands and also seen an ENT specialist who put a camera down my throat. All of which came back fine... But still the pain is there. Good old aniexty is 0telling me it still must be something serious although with all the tests which have been done i should be confident there isn't.

So question is, has any one had a viral infection which wouldn't shift/go away. Or could the anxiety just be causing this all along?

Many thanks all in advance

  • Hi there. I have had the same thing for 6 months now.  All started from a normal cold and then a chest infection.

Had a few CBCs and all come back clear, as did infection markers.

They thought it was silent reflux and had 5 weeks of Omeprazole which did nothing.

Had the camera down throat at ENT and he said no cancer but had swollen lymph nodes and should be ok in a few weeks. This was June and it's still bad now.

Other doctors thought it was Glandular Fever, but 2 blood tests didn't confirm it. Was not strep either.

Now they think it could be my thyroid (been on Levo for 11 years now).

Got a throat ultrasound in a couple of weeks and done nothing but cry and cry for months as convinced I have cancer.

I so hope everyone on this thread is ok now and found out what they have.

  • Mine was "normal" but I questioned the results as thought it was slightly too high - that was last September, and the doctor has been off with me ever since, like how DARE I question her judgement.  I was due another test in April but no idea when it can happen now thanks to this lockdown.

Wishing you all the best xx

  • Hi there, been reading this thread with interest.

4 weeks ago I had quite a anxiety attack one night and ever since I've had a sore throat and the feeling that is a lump in my throat and constantly trying to swallow. I think for several people on here me included having health anxiety in these c-19 times is multiplying the symptoms and worry.

Normally you would go down the doctor/hospital and get checked out but everybody is too frightened

to touch these places as throat anxiety would just be replaced with covid anxiety.

One thing that I hope means it's anxiety based is I wake up reasonably ok but the symptoms build all day and the constant trying to swallow the lump annoys the throat and neck and causes the discomfort there.

There's several causes in these situations...anxiety/reflux/globus/gerd and of course in very rare cases cancer but I've also missed off probably 20 other reasons....

  • Well for me my throat situation is slightly diferent. I don't feel the need to swallow everytime but I have this weird rough feeling at the back of my throat. It feels like I have been shouting to the top of my lungs for an hour straight. I don't have anxiety. my doctors tried treating for acid reflux and never worked. I've heard of 'globus sensation' but that seem to be more linked to anxiety? I might be wrong. My doctors have even gone and taken my tonsils out and my problems still stand.

It seems like many people on this thread/forum are suffering from this mysterious condition and doctors can't seem to find anything. My nightmare would be if doctors can't find anything then start pulling out the 'Oh its nothing' or 'It's anxiety', 'Try these pills'. But I see Debs and few other people are already facing this issue.

  • I reluctantly did try antidepressants (Sertraline) and could only last 6 days on them as I not only felt like a zombie, but my left pupil in my eye dilated very large - I got an emergency out of hours appointment (111 said to IMMEDIATELY go to one) and was told to stop them.  I do have an eye condition called Pigment Dispersion, which can lead to glaucoma, and it matters not if its SSRI or SNRI pills - I am not allowed to take them as they are too big a risk. So I cannot take anything for my anxiety.

  • I tried Sertraline for the first time ever. The next day I had the worst headachne ever. It was like 5 time my worst hangover. When I read side effects could last for months I thought sod that.

Spoke to my doctor to thinks it's anxiety related. He said he would be concerned if you have a terrible hoarse voice not a very mild hoarse voice. Happy to have a look but then you have the anxirty of going to a hospital when c-19 is being treated and worry about catching that.

  • I would not want to go in a hospital now, and getting a taxi there too.  But I feel worried as have this thing that happens on occasions at night when asleep where my throat dries out and then have a choking fit and cannot breathe.  It is a dry cough and then once can breathe again, have to keep clearing my throat as it feels like swallowing gravel.  it is terrifying to go through.

I just hope its because I cannot breathe through my nose very well (due to this growth on my septum which I cannot get seen to as ENT not doing appointments).

I have had this occasional choking thing since last spring (2019) so hoping it's not coronavirus.

  • I think you would be seriously ill if you had coronavirus from the stories I've heard about people who have had it so do not worry it's that please.

  • Hi,lm suffering the same stress as you .

My life change 100%,the hospitals dont bother to.help as they cancel all the throat examens.

I have a bad pain in my throat and ear and l dont know what to do and  be the same person as l used to be.

So scare to.visit A&E again as they just said " sorry we can't help you " you got the virus !

  • Hi Debsy,

I'm in a similar situation - apart from what now seems chronic sore throat, feeling like things stick to it, phlegm I can get rid off  and difficulty swallowing (esp on the right side) - I also suffer with breathlessness, lightheadedness and have on & off chest pain.... These last symptoms seem to be the same as coved 19. In fact 4 gps have suggested to me I am suffering with post viral fatigue....that could be corona, but not necessarily....

I have other symptoms bloated stomach & pain/weight under left side of ribs & I'm referred an upper endoscopy & CT scan

  • Hi BPkr - sounds so similar, and yes I do panic about the symptoms matching that "plague" (as I call it) but how would most of us know we have it/had it without any tests, or reliable ones at that?

I have had Chronic Fatigue for 10 years nearly, but my doctors dismiss it and never help me.  I also have a constantly bloated stomach and digestive issues, which they all tried to write off as reflux, but ENT said I had no evidence of suffering it when he examined me.  But still there wasn't a name for what I have.  It could be hormone changes with me, but surprise surprise, there is a shortage of HRT so cannot even give it a trial.

My doctors haven't even called me in all this chaos - they know I have anxiety and all these issues going on, as well as being overdue for thyroid blood tests and the ENT appointment for the blockage in my nostril, but everything is now seemingly permanently on hold while this plague rages on and on.  I feel like giving up, as feel this will never be over and I will never get seen to, and it affects my already damaged mental health not knowing what the hell to do anymore.

I so hope you will get seen soon for your referrals. Best of luck.

  • Yes, you are not alone - the mental health issues are off the chart for me as well. I think many of us end up feeling trapped, powerless and alone. Weird times.  Some days are excruciatingly painful - mentally I mean, nevermind the physical issues. Today, I found out I had more energy to walk - so I walked and walked. I might pay for this with exhaustion later, but it helped. I'm also taking valerian  - it helps with anxiety & I much prefer it to antidepressants or beta blockers that doc gave me. What things help you with the anxiety?

  • I do some form of exercise each day, from a gruelling 3 hour workout in my room on a Mon/Tues, which takes longer for me as I ache and try to break it up with small easy jobs, an hours' walk every other Weds, do sit ups every day.  I sadly find that it does not really help me mentally. Music is the best thing for me, and been listening to a lot of it lately, but do that anyhow!  Trouble is, it brings back memories of happier and healthier times, so can be a bit of a double edged sword!

  • Im very impressed with your physical exercises - I'm feeling too run down for things like sit ups - but try to take a walk most days. You are so right about the pain of memories of better times - such painful, uninvited ghosts! I do wish you health and peace, :)

  • I have to force myself to do them and they really hurt me, but I try to do my best. I don't really go out much walking, even less now in the current situation, so you do well to do that!  Sending love and best wishes to you too x
