Chronic Sore Throat

Hi All,

Just after a bit of advice, I've had a sore throat (especially when swallowing) for nearly 4 months now. Been to the docs numerous times, had 2 complete full blood tests (for all sorts), ultra sound of the throat/glands and also seen an ENT specialist who put a camera down my throat. All of which came back fine... But still the pain is there. Good old aniexty is 0telling me it still must be something serious although with all the tests which have been done i should be confident there isn't.

So question is, has any one had a viral infection which wouldn't shift/go away. Or could the anxiety just be causing this all along?

Many thanks all in advance

  • Looks like I'm not the only one suffering from this. I've been suffering from this for 15ish months to be exact. Start from December 2018. One day woke up from a nagging sore throat. No fever/colds. Went to the GP and they gave me antibiotics and it never worked, tired GERD tablets for 4/5weeks and didn't make a difference. Then went to the ENT put a camera down my nose and they found that one tonsil was bigger than the other.  They said I am going to need a tonsilectomy. I went with the surgery. 4/5 weeks after the surgery I went back as an outpatient for a check up and I still complained of the nagging sore throat. The ENT specialist just looked at my throat and said to 'Give it more time to heal'. Few months later before xmas 2019, went back to the GP and complained of a sore throat again. My GP tried to pull the anxiety card on me but booked for a bloodtest for Vitamin deficiency (I think) and Unereactive Thyroid. Results came back clear. So I went back to my GP and they refered me to the ENT which WAS due this april but due to COVID, it got canceled.

I can drink fine but when I eat solid foods I can feel something small scraping at the back of my throat. Due to this, alot of the times I do not feeling like speaking or going out because of the discomfort I am experiencing. I'm starting to feel very down and depressed because I have a feeling the doctor wont find anything and say its in my head. Will I have to live with this for the rest of my life? I know its not really anxiety because I went on holiday for 2 weeks and I was still in pain/discomfort.

I'm 21y/o never smoked and only drink on special occasions.

  • Your story sounds almost exactly like mine. Had mine now since March 2019.  Started as the normal cold, then once more turned into an infection - chest this time.  The 2 lots of antibiotics made me worse and I still to this day blame the Doxycyclin I was given as then things just started to fall to pieces bit by bit - the sore throat:  like you I was told it was reflux and given those horrible Omeprazole things which did nothing but cause weight gain.

Had ENT appointment and told there was NEVER any reflux but I had a lymph node and it did not look cancerous and to have some throat spray. Didn't work.  Had another ENT appointment in November to look more at the vocal chords: nothing wrong. Had a thyroid scan:  nothing wrong.

I was told I have anxiety as well (Which is true and its got a LOT worse as I am always worried about never being well and having no energy), and my Dr stupidly [prescribed me a course of sertraline - I had to get up to an emergency clinic 6 days after on a Saturday night as the pupil in my left eye went large and was told to stop immediately.  I have an eye condition called Pigmentary dispersion and should NEVER be given any sort of SSRI/SNRI pill as could cause glaucoma.  My Dr seemed to not believe me and there was "no record" of me attending this emergency.

More problems started to happen throughout last year, chest pains (which I went up A&E a number of times about as I could not breathe either), constocondritis (where my ribs were in AGONY), blocked sinuses.

I was eventually referred for a echocardiogram and that confirmed the ectopic beats and I had to suggest could it be hormones (as I am 48 and had 2 missed periods in Nov/Dec). Could not get HRT patches or even pills as there was a national shortage.  Never heard about them again.  I was meant to have another ENT referral for the lump I have growing on my septum on the right inside of my nose - but thanks to this bloody virus taking over the world, I doubt I will ever get seen and I worry if that's cancer too.  I have had awful smells in my nose (either burnt plastic, bonfire or really sweet perfume) for about 4 years and it's got a LOT worse in the last year.

I can understand why you feel so hopeless and worry that your doctor will think you are imagining it - that's all I ever get accused of.  I do smoke (I know I shouldn't!) and rarely drink. I feel so sorry for you, being only 21 as well.  I so hope you can get your problems sorted and thank you so much for the friend request too, which I accepted xx

  • Hi. I am currently getting similar symptoms and I'm convinced it's an overactive thyroid. Graves' disease can give eye problems, palpitations etc and I'm guessing if the thyroid is swollen it will be tender, especially swallowing. In 2016 I was really ill and thyroid results were very very close to the boundary between abnormal and normal. The doctors seem to just be robotic and if it says normal that'll do for them! I'm now awaiting retest results as throat is so so painful again. Try asking for or looking at your results (mine are online) . Hope you get some relief very soon.

  • Mine was "normal" but I questioned the results as thought it was slightly too high - that was last September, and the doctor has been off with me ever since, like how DARE I question her judgement.  I was due another test in April but no idea when it can happen now thanks to this lockdown.

Wishing you all the best xx

  • Hi there, been reading this thread with interest.

4 weeks ago I had quite a anxiety attack one night and ever since I've had a sore throat and the feeling that is a lump in my throat and constantly trying to swallow. I think for several people on here me included having health anxiety in these c-19 times is multiplying the symptoms and worry.

Normally you would go down the doctor/hospital and get checked out but everybody is too frightened

to touch these places as throat anxiety would just be replaced with covid anxiety.

One thing that I hope means it's anxiety based is I wake up reasonably ok but the symptoms build all day and the constant trying to swallow the lump annoys the throat and neck and causes the discomfort there.

There's several causes in these situations...anxiety/reflux/globus/gerd and of course in very rare cases cancer but I've also missed off probably 20 other reasons....

  • Well for me my throat situation is slightly diferent. I don't feel the need to swallow everytime but I have this weird rough feeling at the back of my throat. It feels like I have been shouting to the top of my lungs for an hour straight. I don't have anxiety. my doctors tried treating for acid reflux and never worked. I've heard of 'globus sensation' but that seem to be more linked to anxiety? I might be wrong. My doctors have even gone and taken my tonsils out and my problems still stand.

It seems like many people on this thread/forum are suffering from this mysterious condition and doctors can't seem to find anything. My nightmare would be if doctors can't find anything then start pulling out the 'Oh its nothing' or 'It's anxiety', 'Try these pills'. But I see Debs and few other people are already facing this issue.

  • I reluctantly did try antidepressants (Sertraline) and could only last 6 days on them as I not only felt like a zombie, but my left pupil in my eye dilated very large - I got an emergency out of hours appointment (111 said to IMMEDIATELY go to one) and was told to stop them.  I do have an eye condition called Pigment Dispersion, which can lead to glaucoma, and it matters not if its SSRI or SNRI pills - I am not allowed to take them as they are too big a risk. So I cannot take anything for my anxiety.

  • I tried Sertraline for the first time ever. The next day I had the worst headachne ever. It was like 5 time my worst hangover. When I read side effects could last for months I thought sod that.

Spoke to my doctor to thinks it's anxiety related. He said he would be concerned if you have a terrible hoarse voice not a very mild hoarse voice. Happy to have a look but then you have the anxirty of going to a hospital when c-19 is being treated and worry about catching that.

  • I would not want to go in a hospital now, and getting a taxi there too.  But I feel worried as have this thing that happens on occasions at night when asleep where my throat dries out and then have a choking fit and cannot breathe.  It is a dry cough and then once can breathe again, have to keep clearing my throat as it feels like swallowing gravel.  it is terrifying to go through.

I just hope its because I cannot breathe through my nose very well (due to this growth on my septum which I cannot get seen to as ENT not doing appointments).

I have had this occasional choking thing since last spring (2019) so hoping it's not coronavirus.

  • I think you would be seriously ill if you had coronavirus from the stories I've heard about people who have had it so do not worry it's that please.
