Chronic Sore Throat

Hi All,

Just after a bit of advice, I've had a sore throat (especially when swallowing) for nearly 4 months now. Been to the docs numerous times, had 2 complete full blood tests (for all sorts), ultra sound of the throat/glands and also seen an ENT specialist who put a camera down my throat. All of which came back fine... But still the pain is there. Good old aniexty is 0telling me it still must be something serious although with all the tests which have been done i should be confident there isn't.

So question is, has any one had a viral infection which wouldn't shift/go away. Or could the anxiety just be causing this all along?

Many thanks all in advance

  • Thank you Ben - I thought last year was bad enough but this one has taken an even worse turn and I cannot function at all it seems. I go for help and do not get any.  Thank you for your kind words though x

  • Absolutely nothing. My doctors are useless. I have had endless appointments but they treat me as a joke and also lie to me and twist things to make me look like I make it up. They thought my situation may be down to menopause starting, but of course, no HRT as there is a national shortage.  I have beeen up there with my husband on numerous occasions and get told to make appointments at the reception to follow up then they pretend they "are not allowed to do it", even though I was told by the doctor to. Then it's phone back next week, we do that and they then change it to phone on the day, and we did that and of course - no appointments available. I flipped that last time (a week or so ago) and my husband was so scared of my anger and talks of ending it all, that he called 999 and a paramedic phoned me and said she would try to get me an appointment - of course she failed as they are so useless up that doctors.  We did get an appointment last Tues with some girl who should not even be qualified in my opinion, and all she did was refer me to ENT - this could have easily been done over the phone.  I am wondering did she even do the referral? If I felt better I would change the doctors I am at.  Thank you for asking and hope you are ok x

  • Morning Debs

I just looked at your very first post and see that you saw an ENT specialists back in September. Surely you should still be under that specialist ? Have you tried yourself to make another appointment with him /her and say that since your last visit nothing has changed , if anything things have got a little worse .

I think that's the route I would take if you can . Give it a go .

    Hugs Ginny x x

  • Hi Ginny - I had 2 ENT appointments in 2019 - the first for lymph nodes and sore throat in June, and he said that it was not cancer and gave me some useless throat spray. It still persisted. Endless Drs appointments and then scan on neck/thyroid - nothing but a "small thyroid".  I also developed ectopic heartbeats (found on a visit to A&E) and got told to check it out sometime. These got worse and after months of begging to be sorted out at doctors, had ECG and then a 24 hour ECG and eventually this January had an echocardiogram which showed I had them but no other problem with heart.  The specialist (after another long wait for a follow up appt) said that no idea why had them and could be anxiety.  I said could it be linked to menopause (as I had missed 2 periods and last year they were all over the place) and he said possibly. We enquired at Doctors re HRT and there is none about to take. So it's just left hanging.  I did have another ENT appt in November, but it was a nurse who did it and said my throat and vocal chords were ok. Once more left hanging in the air.  Doctors say to stop smoking - I have tried to cut down but how my anxiety is over this illness never going and this coronavirus now in my town, it's hard to stop totally.  This other ENT appt I want booked is for my nose - I had another cold start 7 weeks ago today with a sore throat then the sneezing and coughing etc. Tried the Neilmed nasal rinse stuff as a few years ago it helped - it made it worse and the inner part of my septum is all blown out and red and blocked my nostril and I am terrified that it's cancer.  Yet that Doctor looked up nose and said she could not see anything??  Gave me a 5 day course of prednisolone which made me nearly lose my mind how it caused me to think suicidal thoughts and it did not reduce the swelling. Then all the stress about the appointments (which I explained in another post on here) and now just waiting.  Sorry this seems all garbled but I haven;t checked into this page a while and sorry not to explain more when it was happening.

  • you should definitely try change your GP if that's the case or go to a private clinic, since your current doctors aren't giving you the attention to need. Maybe a new GP could give you the help you want.

Btw have you ever had a CT/PET scan? If you haven't and your GP isn't letting you, maybe you should think about paying for one at a private clinic. It could be expensive, but it could relieve the stress you have.

  • If I could get this ENT thing done, I would change doctors, but there are not really any near me that I can go to. I do not drive.  Then this surgery would  "lose" my records and every hospital or place that I go to for treatments would get confused, and the chemist... this all happened before when I changed surgeries to one near me when I moved to the other side of town 9 years ago.  I cannot afford private health care - I just do not have that sort of money sadly.

  • Thanks for replying Debsy. Sorry to hear you are feeling so depressed aswell. I'm still waiting for appointment. Sometimes I am in so much pain with my throat. I just wish I knew what is causing it. Friends are starting to think it's in my head which hurts me that they think that. I just feel I am in limbo now waiting for ENT. Its definitely affecting my quality of life.

  • I HATE that, when people think you are imagining it. I have been accused of it as well, even from doctors.  Yeah because we want to pretend we are in pain hey?!  I am not sure if that referral has even gone through and if I ring up to ask, I will get snapped at and told that there are "other more important things doctors are worried about and busy with".  Hugs to you and so hope you get seen soon xx

  • Hi Debsy, my mother had cancer of the esophagus and died some years ago when the cancer spread. She had a sore throat for several years before she died and no doctor was able to help her. One with a liking for a natural approach suggested she eat raw garlic sandwiches which she did , I think it helped for a time. The thing is, she smoked. The nicotine and smoke will constantly irritate your throat surface and the doctors may be too polite to tell you that as long as you smoke it won't go away. Take it from me, my mother would not stop either, one excuse after another, "nerves" etc. but your throat will only be cured when you stop smoking. It's your choice. Learn from what happened to my mother, it only ends one way. Act now while you may. Stopping smoking may also help your heart. As a non-smoker when I try a nicotine chewing gum my heart races also. Could be a connection.

  • Hi just wanted to ask, if there any updates on the situation?
