Cervical ectropion and colposcopy

I was first diagnosed with a cervical ectropion last year during pregnancy due to spotting. On two separate occasions during pregnancy two different doctors told me I had an ectropion and didn't seem worried.

6 weeks after having my baby i had my first depo shot. A week after that I have had light pink spotting on and off evey since. I went back to the doctors last week and said I have got myself really worried about cc. She offered to look at my cervix which I agreed to and she said the ectropion is definitely still there and bleeds on contact, and has referred me for a colposcopy. I am now worried sick that I am going to be told I have cervical cancer, but my last smear was in 2016 and was normal so surely things can't be that bad?

I've made myself so sick with worry that I have now been prescribed diazepam and a mild anti depressant. I just sit looking at my 2 young children and feel so worried. My youngest is only 3 months old. Cc was never mentioned during pregnancy. Really need some reassurance as my anxiety is through the roof.

Thank you

  • Hi

My daughter is 17 and after lots of pain and bleeding, many different pills, pain and bleeding after sex, they've just discovered she has an ectropian. Do they cause pain ?

The GP said not. We're waiting for a scan and a colposcopy. She's so upset and way too young to be worrying about this. She's also losing her hair, is constantly Ill with sore throat, awaiting a tonsilectomy, and chronic fatigue, low iron. I'm at a loss and trying to keep upbeat for her but can feel her pain and worry.

  • Hiya

Sorry to hear about what your daughter is going through. Contraception with certain hormones can cause ectropion. My doctor said even pregnancy can cause it due to all the extra hormones, but once you give birth your body then goes back to the normal balance of hormones...where as with regular use of contraception we aren't allowing our the ectropion to heal up...my doctor advised me to go for a pill that has one hormone in not two because it will lesson the chances of ectropion but i still haven't done this because I'm not good with taking tablets as I'll forget and don't wanna become pregnant.

For me, I had no pain with sex. I did lose a little weight at first due to the stress of it and I also weren't eating much. All I would see was streaks of blood when I'd wipe after sex at first and it did become more over time.

When I went for the colposcopy I couldn't help but to look on the screen and my cervix was gushing blood even by the slightest touch of the gauze pad thing and solution that they used to clean my cervix. It was a horrible sight...very frightening but is common with ectropion and/or hpv strains. In the end they did use silver nitrate sticks to help stop the bleeding and I never experienced the bleeding with sex since. The silver nitrate and other treatment can be an option for her with the ectropion if it is causing hassle to her daily life.

i had my year follow up on 1st oct this year which was just a normal smear and i am freeeeeee of hpv (CIN 1) so it cleared up by itself after a year and now I don't have to go back for a smear until 3years time.

Tell her to try her best not to worry, and to think positive as stressing will only make things worst.

Last year i did a lot of research to find out what I could do to treat the hpv from home using natural remedies whilst waiting for my follow up appointment and I found out that shiitake mushrooms are good for helping hpv clear up. I found these tablets at Holland and Barretts. They are called pukka mushroom gold organic which contain shiitake mushrooms. I took these almost everyday since my colposcopy last year. She can subscribe and have them sent out monthly and that way she will get a discount or she can look out the penny sale.

Also floradix liquid form is great for low iron as I suffer with low iron in general. Deficiency can also cause hair loss and fatigue so maybe requesting a full blood test would be good.

    is she getting much sleep?

  • Oh yes, turns out that the lump in my groin area was due to shaving and has now gone...weeks ago. Follow up results were negative so i got the all clear. Thank God!!

  • Thankyou so much, she was but now she's just so worried about  it all so having vivid dreams and struggling b to stay asleep.

Thanks for all your advice x

  • You're very welcome.
Kalms are also good. They are herbal tablets sold in supermarkets or chemist. That helps with short term stress and worries and sleeping problems. I took them together so I know its allowed but just for a peace of mind for you and her both still feel free to ask a pharmacist or your gp if they can be taken together before doing so.

Its a horrible feeling to be uncertain about something like this but I have her in my prayers. Please update me if she don't mind.

  • Hi Jody2020 and Kezzles07,

I hope you don't mind me jumping in quickly but I noticed shiitake mushrooms being mentioned so I just wanted to share some information we have about this.

Although there have been some promising results from the studies that have looked at whether mushrooms can help the immune system, there is still currently no evidence that any type of mushroom can cure or prevent cancer.

    Kind regards,

  • Hiya.
No that's fine. We are all here to help and encourage one another so everyone is welcome to add some input.

Where I researched it, it was there to help treat CIN 1...a mild type of HPV which does not generally turn into cancer. It wasn't stated that it can cure cancer. To my knowledge, HPV itself isn't cancer but a precursor to cancer depending on the type.

The young lady has what I have also cervical ectropion which can be caused by contraception and excessive hormones which I spoke a bit about my experience of.

By Gods grace she will be fine and it'll have nothing to do with the C word.

I just like to share anything that I feel helped me...and it's for others to then research further into it and decide whether they feel it'll be beneficial to them.

  • Thankyou so much for your kind words. All so helpful and yes I will get back to you. I do think it has something to do with excessive hormones definitely. She has all the symptoms

    Thanks again

    Sending love x
