Scary mole

Hi

This is my first post. I have been referred on the tww for a suspicious looking mole on my thigh. It is small but is red with red around it and I was expecting the gp to tell me not to worry. However he referred me urgently and I am now waiting to go and am petrified. I know it’s something sinister as these things don’t tend to just appear. I foolishly googled and found that I could have the worst case and potentially die why did I google?! Anyway I suppose I’m just getting this off my chest and hopeful that somebody has some calming advice to get me through.

Thanks in advance x

  • Hi i read your post and just wanted to reply. I had a growing suspicions mole removed from my foot under the two week wait. I had an appointment with a dermatology consultant who decided he didn't like the look of it under the dermascope. He removed it there and then and sent for testing. After a 6 weeks wait i finally recieved a letter saying that i was all clear. It was BENIGN!! So just wanted to say that even though they can look dodgy, melanoma is relatively rare and quite unlikely. Good luck with everything. Don't ruin your weekend worrying like i did for nothing. Take care xx

  • hiya

Thank you so much for your reply ( sorry mine is is bold I’m still getting used to this! ) I am so glad that was the result for you and I appreciate your good vibes its quite hard to stay positive during this wait as it looks very scary but hearing positive outcomes is lovely.

    Thanks again x

  • Aww bless you i know its really hard. However my mole had all signs from abcde and was totally benign. Xx

  • Hi Mylou34,

I know this is a scary time for you and the waiting is the hardest. My first piece of advice is DON'T DR GOOGLE! There have been huge strides made recently in the treatments of melanoma but Google is behind the times so it will only scare you. For more up to date and correct information look at this, the CRUK site, the Macmillan site, the British Association of Dermatologist site or the Melanoma UK site.

Secondly, dodgy moles can sometimes be benign, melanoma or dysplastic navaeus - these are moles that look dodgy, are benign, but they will remove them because they could turn cancerous in the future. So hopefully yours will be one of these. If it turns out to be melanoma don't panic - you will be treated quickly.

The best thing at the moment is to keep busy to distract yourself from the waiting. If you feel stressed and anxious try listening to a meditation CD or try yoga. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Angie,

Thank you so much for your response. I really do regret googling as it is quite worrying and has driven me slightly crazy today. I have been trying to be calm and think positively as much as possible and just having a place to talk here is so helpful. I feel much less alone.

Thank you again for your reply. Xx

  • Hi Lou xx

I was urgently referred for a dodgy looking mole. It could not have looked any more dodgy-er. I had always had it and known it to appear strange but....I casually ran it by my GP whilst there for something else and she was concerned....two colours....central black spot....blurred edges. As I couldn’t say if it had always been like that I was in with the dermatologist before I knew it.

It turned out to be benign (normal beauty mark and the blurred edges was a normal brown freckle on different layers of skin). So please don’t get carried away xxx because it might well be yours isn’t anything to worry about xxx

It is horrible waiting.....but the appointment will be there before you know it and you’ll know for sure what you’re dealing with xxx

  • oh thank you so much. It’s lovely to hear another good outcome. I can’t remember if this is new or old but I just know I have never seen it looking like this before! And the GP’s face looked so grim. But you’re quite right about knowing what I’m dealing with. I hope that’s soon

Thank you so much for your reply xx

  • Hi,

Thank you for your kindness x

  • Wonderful news. You can now breathe easy xx
