2ww Breast Cancer screening advice

Hi all...

I've never posted anything like this so please bare with me. I went to my GP a week ago as I was concerned about my left breast. Had a little fluid leaking out of nipple, the occasional ache/swelling but nothing else (no pain at all nor marks). Only taken me 3 months to have the courage to see go  . ( Silly of me really). I done all the usual checks and felt nothing. But when I asked my GP or a second opinion, she found a lump. Hence why I got a 2ww appointment.

Anyway my question is; What sort of examination will they do and would I get the results that day? I know biopsies take longer but would they still have an idea?

Feeling pretty nervous now. Thanks for your time xx

  • YYes Sorry to know ur GP felt a lump in ur breast. From my own experience u will be seen at the Breast clinic first and referred for a mammogram or scan to check the lump and maybe a biopsy if necessary.Lumps can be many things like cysts and benign lumps and not always cancer. So dont panic -see what the Breast Surgeon says. All will be well hopefully. All the best for ur appointment. Keep us posted

  • Hi there,

Sorry about the lump and other symptoms, totally get why you're feeling nervous.

Breast clinics do tend to differ slightly but at mine they can do physical examination and ultrasound.  If they want a mammogram or biopsy that is referred to the mammography department of the hospital. What they can or can't tell you on the day is entirely dependent on how your lump presents on scans etc.  At my first breast clinic ultrasound it obviously presented in a way that screamed cancer at them as I was rushed in for a mammogram and biopsy appointment the next day.  From the mammogram alone the radiographer told me it was at least stage 2, likely stage 3 (it was 3c) as he believed it was already spreading but biopsies would confirm/deny that.  However, for lots of people the lump may not present in an obvious or classic way and they are entirely reliant on the biopsy results.  Of course on the day they may be able to diagnose it as something entirely benign, if your lump has the classical presentation of a certain condition, it really just depends on what they see.

As you'll know there can be lots of reasons for lumps and fluid and the many things that go on with our breasts so please try not to let worry ruin your days, and you are now in the system and getting it checked by professionals so you're in the best position you could be in.

The waiting is the worst, but it will be here before you know it.

  • Hi

I went to the breast clinic yesterday,  although I was recalled after a mammogram,  I didn't have a lump.

My clinic did everything in one day. More detailed mammogram , ultrasound and then biopsy under x-ray control.  That was the most uncomfortable but even that wasn't bad. I'm not too sore today. Took about 3 hours for everything and everyone was so lovely and patient and explained everything along the way with plenty of time for questions.  I do have to wait a week for results but strangely I feel much better than I did before.

I was put as uncertain rather than suspicious or malignant so that might have helped.

Good luck, and try to keep distracted if you can. I found a lot of support on here.

    Xx

  • Thank you all for your response and support. I really appreciate it . I think what worried me was she said it was a hard lump. It also doesn't help that since been told by GP, I've heard so much about Cancer ( Even the storyline in Coldfeet). Husband's not taking it too well . Feels like his trending on egg shells. Haven't told no one else.  Wish TwinTwo and Nelliekate a speedy recovery and get lots of positive results  . Xx

  • Thank you

Try to keep distracted if you can and just get through one day at a time
