First mammogram recall

Hi everyone

I'm on here to look for some sensible answers. I had my 1st mammogram last week age 52. Have been recalled so immediately assume I have breast cancer. I phoned unit they say I have calcification but I find all sorts of messages online. What does it really mean?

  • Hi

glad everything was done on the one day,  which does make sense, as your not waiting for the next appointment, and it went well.

    regards

  • Thank you, yes I have nothing but praise for how easy it was. I felt a bit shaky after but they gave me tea and biscuits. I feel quite positive tonight.

  • Just found this forum and pleased to find others going through exactly the same!!

I went for my first routine mammogram (aged 52) 2 weeks ago and got a recall letter just before the weekend with an appointment for today at the centre. My stomach has been in knots all weekend and can't sleep for worry!

I have some very small microcalcifications on right. They did another mammogram, then ultrasound, then doctor said they wanted to do a biopsy. Thought I was going to have to come back another day but they managed to fit that in a bit later today - having had a liver biopsy, I wasn't really too scared about the biopsy itself. It was a piece of cake compared with that!!

But now the waiting begins again!! I have to go back next Thursday to get the results. They try to be up-beat and say 'it's probably nothing' but I can't help thinking they say that even if they know that's not the case and are just making sure before giving wrong information.

I'm a bit confused because the doctor who did the ultrasound said I didn't have breast cancer but that if the calcifications were found to be 'abnormal' then they would have to be surgically removed. Doesn't that mean they're cancerous? I've made the mistake of googling all this and am now even more confused. How I am going to stand the growing worry for 10 days I have no idea! :-(

  • Hi Alfeeee - So sorry you're going through this. They often say these microcalcifations are pre cancer. Do you know if they're in the milk duct? Mine were (DCIS). As I understand it, after biopsy they are graded low, medium and high.

Low and medium can often be left and monitered, but if the biopsy shows high grade then there is more chance of them becoming invasive and spreading. Mine were high and I had lumpectomy and radiotherapy. I'm absolutely fine now and cured.

With the advancements in technology they are finding these things much earlier and giving us all a greater chance of being cured.

Keep yourself busy and the time will soon pass. Wishing you lots of luck for next week. let us know how you get on - Irene x

  • Hi

You're at the same stage as me! They were very honest at my clinic and said it's uncertain,  but because of that they want to be sure. They showed me the form and I could see that there was no suggestion of 'suspicious '.

For me they are looking for DCIS like Irene70 says. It has an excellent treatment rate.

My calcifications were in a little line inside the duct.

I think they remove them if they are medium or low grade because they don't want them to become cancerous later on.

Keep positive and take advantage of the support on here,  it's helped me no end
