Really worried - found lump under breast

Hi all,

So I noticed a small lump under my right breast near my rib and thought it must be something to do with my rib cage so left it alone. This was about 6 months ago anyway had lots going on in my life emotionally and although this is not an excuse I have not been checking myself. Yesterday I was feel bit rough so had a relaxing bath and because I had read about someone I knew having lump deep inside the breast tissue I thought I would do proper check. I was horrified to find the small lump that was a size of a pea is now size of a fifty pence piece. I checked it again before bed when I was laying down and then again this morning in shower as I thought I was over exaggerating it. I called and called GP and been to see her this morning to be told it is a lump and she’s referring me to breast clinic immediately and should hear from them within next two weeks.

I’m 48 years old and I have been to breast clinic before as had cyst previously in left breast. I’m hoping it’s the same but I’m so worried it’s not. Haven’t told my partner or family as don’t want to worry anyone as our family has been through enough lately. Also by not telling anyone it makes it not real in my head.

Any advice be appreciated

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, JoJoH, although I'm sorry to hear about the reason that brings you here.

I think we can all relate to how anxious you're right now but the most important step you have already taken, which was to phone your GP to get an appointment with the breast clinic.

It's not always easy to communicate these things with those who are close to us, is it? Often times we are left with the sense they wouldn't untersdand or we simply don't want to worry them in ways we find unnecessary, so I'm glad you decided to join our community as I'm sure you'll meet others here who can relate to what you are going through at the moment. Hopefully some of our members will come along shortly to give you the advice you seek.

Until then, post as much as you need, we're here to listen. And once you know more, come back and give us an update if you find a minute, we're keeping our fingers crossed this second time lump will be nothing serious.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello, you did the right thing, the clinic will soon sort things out....it's hard not to worry though...it's only human.

fingers crossed it's all fine....keep us posted if you get time? X

  • Thank you for your response and kind words.

I feel sick not knowing and waiting. I have hospital appointment with breast surgical team next Wednesday to have mammogram, ultrasound and possibly biopsy. Now it seems more real. Turned into this crazy person who checks the lump every day praying it’s gone but it never does!! Longest 2 weeks of my life!!

    Will keep you posted

  • What you are going through is perfectly normal. I did the same when I found my lump, kept checking it every day. Even day I had my lumpectomy I was still checking. The waiting not know is the hardest part your mind goes into over drive. Although I had to have a lumpectomy done my results finally came out benign but was such a stressful time. Please keep us updated how you are and how the appointment goes. Always here if you need any help x

  • I’m glad yours turned out benign..just hoping for same results. Been away for few days so I can think of other stuff rather than my appointment. Not sure how I’m going to get through tomorrow but still convinced it’s a cyst and or something to do with my ribs so that’s what I’m going to keep thinking until I’m told different.

    Thanks for your support xx

  • Good luck for tomorrow will have my fingers crossed for you x

  • Been thinking of you all day hope your ok x

  • Thank you for all your support!!

After a mammogram and ultrasound and what seems like like forever waiting I can confirm I’ve been given all clear. The lump I could feel was not my imagination but was in fact one of many cysts. The dr explained that it is probably due to the wonderful onset of the menopause!! Oh and be prepared for other symptoms like hot sweats etc... can’t wait. To say I’m relieved does not come near it. She has advised to make sure I check myself regularly and if any new lumps appear or I notice any other changes I should get them checked out. This has taught me a valuable lesson to check more regularly and know your boobs. Anyway thank you all x

  • So pleased for you! Now just do as your told and check regularly! I have download the breast check app it sends a reminder when to check and you can make notes if you think you found something! Now go and celebrate x

  • Thank you I’m going to do that today.
