Swelling in left scrotum/testicle

i have a slight swelling in left scrotum but didn't notice any kind of lumps so far. This coincidently happned the day after my treadmil work out at the inclination of 12 and walking speed of 7.2 KM (Usually my inclination would be at 6). Hence i am not sure if its because of trauma or something else. If i use ice pack the swelling is going away but coming back in few minutes. also swelling is reduced when i lie down. Its not actually paining but i am having some kind of burning sensation in scortam , groin and thigh together. Booked GP appointment in a week but am really worried and not able to concentrate on my work thinking about cancer

    HI Ramco,

I am sorry to hear about your concerns, but am glad that you have made an appointment with your GP to get it investigated.

Hopefully, this is more to do with your gym activity than anything untoward, but you are best to make sure.

It is always a worying time when you are waiting for answers.Try to keep yourself busy over the next week to distract yourself from the wait.

Please keep us updated and remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks for your reply. Yes will keep posted after my GP visit. But i have few basic questions:

    1. As stated earlier i dont feel any lumps but left scortam is swollen ?does it always have lumps if its cancer ?

    2. Also when i lay down , the swelling is greatly reduced and my testcile almost feel like normal ? but i have slight burning sensation here and there ? would testicular lump go away when we lay down ?

    3. also if i keep ice pack my scortam is back to normal and shrinked (due to cold) . since it is shrinked i can easily look for lumps and i don feel any. i am just confused between TC and Varicocele.I dont have any pain or swelling in groin.

    Hi Ramco,

I am not a medic, merely another cancer pilgrim - breast cancer in my case. The best way to get answers to your questions is to either post in the Ask the Nurses section or phone them and discuss your symptoms. Their telephone number is at the bottom of this page and is Freephone. They are available from 9.00am - 5.00pm, Mon - Fri.

Many people don't feel lumps and, as far as I know, no it doesn't have to have lumps to be cancer. When you lie down any swelling in the body will dissipate, but will swell again when you stand up. Cancer doesn't have to be painful.

This could also be variocele, which are the dilation of testicular veins. Don't be afraid to ask your GP all about the difference between both.

I hope that you get some answers soon.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hi ramco_GB. Welcome to the forum.

I should start out by saying that I'm not a medic or a doctor.

Reading your posts it all sound very familiar to me because I have suffered from something similar over the years.  From what you write (and bearing in mind I have NO qualifications) this sounds like either an infection or traumatic irritation/injury.

There is a structure at the top of each testicle with the tongue-twisting name of "epididymis". This is prone to getting infected on one side or the other, giving a disease with the even more tongue-twisting name of "epididymitis". I can attest that this is no joke - the pain can be dreadful and just as you describe it.

Since you're in pain, I think you should phone your GP's surgery now and ask if you can have an urgent appointment today or tomorrow.  Your GP will assess the problem, hopefully will put your mind at rest over cancer, and prescribe any necessary meds.  Don't forget to ask for painkillers - you'll probably need them.

  • Hello,

I am just back home after getting checked by GP. doctor assured that there are no lumps in any of my testicle. but he asked me to come back if my pain getting worse going further. He said he can feel dialted veins inside my scortum and this coule be varicocele.

but i am not fully relaxed as i have swelling on and off. Would there be lump always if its cancer ? or can cancer come without lumps ? He said at this point there is no need of Ultra sound scan.

  • Hi ramco_GB.

I'm not a doctor, but I think the lump would not come and go if it were cancer. It would be there and the doctor would be able to feel it.

FWIW, after months of persistent low grade pain in my testicles and my second or third attack of epididymitis last year, my doctor referred me for an ultrasound. I believe this was done by a doctor. He did the scan and said there was nothing wrong with my testicles, and with my permission he wanted to extend the scan to see if he could find anything wrong higher up. I agreed and he scanned again. And once again he could find nothing wrong.  No explanation for the pains, but cancer ruled out.

I suggest you now wait and see for a few months. If things settle down again then fine, but if they don't then go back to your doctor and ask again for an ultrasound.

  • Thanks for your reply. Its reassuring.

Let me wait for a week. so far today the swelling as gone down although not fully. But am not having any discomfort or burning sensation or pain for last two days which was there last week. does that mean something is healing ??

  • Guys,

I am having a follow up GP appointment in few hours for my swollen testicle. In previous appointment (happened in last week) doctor examined and assured that there are no lumps.  But its been almost a week but my left testicle is swollen on and off. but now its not paining . Ice pack bringing the scrotum back to normal shape and even swelling reduced when i am lyng down. As per the doctor it shold be a varicocele.

    1. Should i ask GP for Ultra sound for safer side to rule out cancer ? would they prefer US even if they feel that its varicocele ?

    2. Would there be swelling always if its a varicocele ?

I am confused on what to ask my GP today.

  • Hello guys..just a follow up.

had an ultra sound today. and the US guy said that i have a varicocele in my left scrotum. atlast some releif that its not an cancer.

Is there any chance that cancer not get spotted during US ?
