Rectal bleeding

Hi everyone.

Im a 27 year old male and have been experiencing some sort of rectal bleeding over the past 8-12 months. I can’t pin point exactly when it started, it might be over a year.

The bleeding happens not at the time. I had an episode this morning where I passed a large/wide stool (with very little to no pain).  There was no blood in the toilet but when I wiped there was a lot on the paper. The last episode before this was about 3-4 weeks ago which was the same thing and happened a couple of times over 2 days. The time before that was about 3 months before.

I have been to my GP once about this before about 4-5 months ago and he gave me a quick  inspection with a finger to look at the anus. He said he didn’t find anything worrying and that he wasn’t concerned or worried about it being cancer. He gave me some laxatives (movicol). I used these for a week or so and it stopped at the time. I had to stop taking this though as I started getting random urges to go to toilet and feeling flushed out!

Without being too descriptive, I notice that the bleeding usually happens when I pass a reasonably sizeable stool and not smaller and softer ones. This morning for example I passed a large stool and had blood. But afterwards I passed again and I intentionally didn’t strain at all I just let things pass almost with gravity. It came out sort of ribbon like but there was no blood.

I want to see my GP again because I’m just worried that it keeps happening to me. Does this sound serious? I’ve not lost weight although recently I’ve veen through a stressful period and naturally haven’t eaten too much so lost about 3 pounds but nothing big. My habits are pretty normal and nothing major changing.

Please help i feel scared.

  • Hello, firstly I am no medic, but your symptoms do sound likea pile or fissure? Your doctor should be able to confirm this for you , make another appointment to put your mind at rest, I am sure there is nothing to worry about...xx

  • Thank you for replying. I hope it is something like this.i don’t want to have a colonoscopy or anything. And I’m only 27 so surely it can be so serious? ️

  • I am sure the odds are on your side, a colonoscopy can be unpleasant! But the doctor should easily see or feel a pile...( they certainly did for me when I was 16)

Also, try and stay off dr google.....that will defo makes things worse! Lol xx

  • Several months ago, my GP did a quick examination on me but he said he couldn't feel anything and just put it down to a fissure and put me on laxatives.  He said he wasn't concerned it being cancer because of my age.  I looked up the incidence rates for my age and its 3 cases 25-29 year olds in the UK last year per 100,000 people which makes me feel better. That seems extremely low but I think Im reading the graph right. But still feel worried as re-occuring blood from stools isn't normal. :(

  • Did you ever get to the bottom of this? Im in the same situation as you right noe x

  • Hey! So since I wrote this my last episode of bleeding was in December. Basically I went private to a gastro person to get a specialist opinion. He said because of me age it was highly unlikely to be anything serious. He said it was likely to be a hemorrhoid and a bit of IBS.

I had stool samples done - my first set came back as mildly inflamed ( I'd been unwell the week before I did them) and so they asked me to repeat the test 6 weeks onwards. I did so and I didn't hear anything back from them so no action was taken. I was offered a colonoscopy to rule out any IBD but I refused as i didn't have many symptoms for that.

I was told bleeding at a young age can be many things - most often not serious. When I pass stools now, I don't ever strain - as I'm sure blood has only happened when I do this.

  • Thank you for replying! Ive had blood on and off for over a year, i went to doctors and they said possible fissure but are sending me for bloods monday and then said if they come back clear ill need a colonoscpy to investigate further as they said there dont think its ibs i think the pain i get in my stomach is from having a c section a year and half ago x
