Stressing into depression!

Hi there,

so im after advice, possibly even someone to help me feel better who has been through this!

Background: granddad died at 73 with bowel cancer, father died 4 years ago at 52 with bowel cancer and I am now 28.

6 years ago I had a colonoscopy due to bleeding that came back completely clear no polyps just slight piles and no further treatment required.

august last year (2018) I had 9 days where I felt (only way I can describe) as a lead ball in my back passage so I went to the doctors had a digital rectum examination, bloods, and stool sample that all came back fine.

since around the 10 th of December it came back, a constant feeling of something being there that was relieved slightly by going to the toilet, (no other symptoms and they have since died down) during this time I went to the doctors 3 times and they have only tried to give me laxatives that did not work to be honest!

the past 10 days my stools went really narrow, then I caught a cold! Everything I ate made me feel sick for around 2 hours! I was having sharp pains every 5/10 minutes so I took myself to A&E and guess what?? Supposetries and Gaviscon was the answer they gave me! So this led to me ringing my GP rather angry and managed to get a colonoscopy on the 16th of this month.

These symptoms have seemed to die off slightly although the past 2 days I have had small amounts of bright red blood on my paper and feel as though my left bum cheek is bruised? Sore maybe? But not painful.

i just don’t know what to do? Do bowel/rectum symptoms come and go? I am so stressed! I have a ten year old, a 9 month old baby and I get married in 3 weeks this is supposed to be the best time of my life but for some reason I can’t shake the thought of this being the end! Why have I had to fight to be seen?

doctors won’t listen, my family for obvious reasons don’t want to talk about or think about the possibility so I’m currently going through this on my own! Google has made it worse but I can’t help reading things! Cancer has devastated my family and I can’t leave my wife and children I just can’t :( have people had this then the all clear? Doctors say it’s unlikely because of my age but we all know cancer doesn’t care about age.

sorry if this upsets anyone that is currently dealing with this, if I feel symptoms does that mean it’s too late?

  • I am so glad you have a colonoscopy this month. You were right to fight for it. Bowel cancer runs through my husbands family and my husband gets a call every 5 years , he does suffer ibs too which doesn't help. Dr google defo isn't your friend, try and step away from it, it will drive you nuts...

Keep us posted? Fingers crossed for good news! Xx

  • Hi Marlyn,

i hope you are well well and thanks for your reply! Strangely enough I have always thought when it’s my time it’s my time, but I have two beautiful daughters and a beautiful fiancée, like everyone I have so much to live for!

i think without my family history it wouldn’t stress me out as much and doctors thought I didn’t need the colonoscopy as I had one 6 years ago?! Bloods and stools came back fine but that could just be the time of the test maybe?

im no professional, I see this site is great for helping others. I will keep updating I just wanted other people’s stories with similar situations?

    Thanks

  • I am on a different journey, I was diagnosed with breast cancer a few days before Christmas, my mum also had it when she was my age. You were absolutely right to insist on the colonoscopy, although I am curious as to why you are not on a regular screening plan considering your history. I know stress can bring on problems but you need your mind putting at ease and the procedure will do this. It's really difficult to pull yourself out of the dark places but it's only human.....looking forward to hearing good news from you young man! Xx

  • Thanks Marlyn,

i have just been reading your story and you seem very strong which is great! That is half the battle! I will keep an eye on your post also to see how you get on! As with yourself I hope everything works out for you! You seem like a lovely person.. roll on the 16th and hopefully I can enjoy my honeymoon in 3 weeks time!

    all the best

    Hi Richie,

I am so sorry to hear about these symptoms so soon before your wedding. I can understand your worries with cancer being in the family. I have been unfortunate enough to fall prey to 2 bouts of breast cancer following a string of various family cancers in previous years.

If you have had a colonscopy on 16th December and had the other tests earlier, it sounds as if all should be ok. Are you still having a lot of bother with constipation? It can leave you with the symptoms you describe.

I am on treatment for my cancer and a host of other problems. The medication for these cause constipation. Like you I was prescribed suppositaries, tablets, liquid suspensions and powders, which didn't work. An endoscopy showed piles, but they were too small to band. When I strain in going to the loo, I still get bleeding, so it is best to try and avoid this.

I now use Cosmo-Col powders. You just dilute these in a glass of water (or juice in my case, as I'm not too keen on the taste). I take one every morning and, if that doesn't keep me regular, I take another at night, until I regulate myself again. If your faeces build up and cannot be expelled, they can become very uncomfortable and, cause the prolems you decsribe.

I am not a doctor, but I wondered if you have been tested for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. This is certainly something that you can live with, but it can be uncomfortable at times. The blood in your stools could be due to you piles of 6 years ago, which could have got bigger in the interim and may now be big enough to treat. Was there no mention of these this time you had your colonscopy?

Not all cancers are hereditary and yours is not a very strong link if there are only 2 generations involved, so it sounds as if that is not the issue. I hope that this turns out to be the case and, that you can learn to manage your symptoms with the help of the right medication.

It sounds as if you may need further tests to find out exactly what is causing your trouble, but I doubt that you will get any more before your wedding. Try to put this behind you and enjoy your wedding and honeymoon.

I wish you every joy and happiness in your marriage.

Please stay in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hi Jolamine,

my colonoscopy is is this month I have not had it yet, I was hoping people who have had the same scares would get in touch but I guess they would not require this site after the all clear?

I asked about IBS and Bowel cancer and 3 GP’s said it wouldn’t be that as if they already knew?

thank you for your kind words I also wish you the best of luck with everything! It’s nice to know kind people are out there.

    Regards

  • I will be thinking of you on the 16th as that's around the time I will be getting my results! Keep calm and carry lovely lad! Xx

    Hi Richie,

Sorry, I thought that you had got confused with the months and were referring to 16th December. If it is in January, you still have time to ask if the piles have grown any bigger since last time and if there is IBS or cancer present, although I hope not.

I was picked up with blood in my stools with the routine bowel cancer screening, but, after further tests,I was told that I was all clear, apart from the small piles, so I guess that I am one of the lucky ones.

If you want to read more stories about this, go to the blue banner at the top of this page and click on the search box, insert some key words and click This will bring up previous posts on this topic. You are right in that once they get the all clear, people often disappear, so bear that in mind when you see more from people who have cancer than those that don't.

I have my fingers crossed for you for 16th. Please let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Thank you everyone, With other posts i meant that you never hear the final outcome of some people with symptoms so i can only assume they are okor the opposite and have not had time to come back on the forum.

  • Hi Richie - did you manage to get a diagnosis after your colonoscopy? Your symptoms (bar blood) are virtually identical to mine! I'm hoping to get a colonoscopy next week!

    Thanks,
