angiomyolipoma kidney tumour?

A few months ago I started getting uti symptoms which are still ongoing. I had an ultrasound last week and it picked up a 4mm shadow on my left kidney. The doctors report said they believe it’s a angiomyolipoma. I stopped googling this shortly after I started as it terrified me with things like haemorrhaging etc. I’m an otherwise healthy 35yo woman. Has anyone had experience with one of these? I’m going to be having further tests in the coming weeks so they can rule out other things. I can’t help feeling that 4mm is really small to give that diagnosis based on an ultrasound, it’s apparently quite a rare benign tumour. I’m just really scared and wanted to see if anyone out there’s had one of these and knows anything about these/kidney ultrasounds? Thank you x

  • hi there

i was disgnosed with this last year too. I was told that its something i have probably had since haviing ny children and it wont kill me. The hospital said they will keep an eye on it and i only need to worry if it gets bigger. They seem to think it has been there years and is harmless if it doesnt grow. I was told it was an incidental find as they were looking for something else when they found it. I have just accepted it is there but i do not worry about it as it causes me no pain. Hopefully your results will be fine x

    Hi Coco,

Welcome to our forum. I am afraid that I cannot help with this type of cancer, as I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer. However, if you want to find out more, you could try searching this forum, instead of scaring yourself on Google.

If you go to the blue banner at the top of this page and click on it , then click on the search button and, insert angiomyolipoma kidney tumour, it will bring up previous posts on this topic.

I hope that you get your other tests carried out soon. One good thing about this is that it's benign, so try not to worry about it.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you for your reply Cariad that’s really reassuring. Did they tell you if this was quite common? How big is yours and how often do you have it monitored if it’s okay to ask. Is there a connection between having children and these for them to say that? My only worry is that I coincidently had a kidney ultrasound last February and it wasn’t picked up on then so looks like it’s new. Did they do any other tests with you to confirm diagnosis? Sorry for all the questions... I’d rather hear it from someone who’s actually got one than google. There doesn’t seem to be much on them on here after searching. Thank you so much x

  • Hi Coco

they said that they are quite rare but you get them in your childbearing years. My children are 16 and 18 so mine must have been there a while. Mine is 4mm like yours. I was referrrd to a kidney specialist and had a scan. When i went to see him he said they had had a meeting about me and decided there was no need for concern. He indicated they would monitor it on a yearly basis to check for growth but was quite sure it would not grow. That was approx 12 months ago and they have not contacted me so i may just chase it up.please try not to worry. When they say the word tumour its hard not to panic, but we are kucky that they are benign. Dont worry about asking questions, am happy to helpbif i can. Take care

  • Hi Coco321  Hopefully by now you have been seen; and the AML treated. Just wanted you to know you are not alone. Mine kicked off early last year with UTI symptoms: blood in urine but no infection, incontinence, pain etc. After test, after test, scan after scan I was then diagnosed and operated upon with keyhole surgery early this year, the AML was 7.5cms. In hospital for two days and two night. I no longer have 'any' UTI problems and have made a complete and full recovery.  When first told, I was really frightened, but the surgeon gave me some good advice . . .' don't Google it!' I didn't, but I did afterwards and I can now see how 'really, really' frightened I could have become!  You take care.

  • Hi, my name is Caroline and last year I was diagnosed with angiolipoma in my right kidney, I couldn't sleep or rest until I had a second opinion and a private scan but yea got told the same results, I couldn't understand how they could tell wether it was benign with out doi g a biospy but apparently they can, mine was 12mm and just had my second scan last month and no change, how are you?

  • Hi Caroline, I understand from what I have read that AML's are non-cancerous, but need to be monitored as they can grow and become invasive or bleed.

Mine was bleeding, hence my problems. But, I am so grateful to the AML, as when they found it, they also found a small tumour on the same kidney which they were able to remove at the same time they removed the AML, they also saved my kidney.

I have had no further treatment other than a CT Scan every six months and I have never looked back and feel great.

    Fingers crossed for you Caroline!

  • Hi, how big was your aml? And what was the other tumor? X

  • Morning!

The AML was 7.5cm, the tumor was 3cm and cancerous. They found the tumor at the same time they found the AML and not while they were doing the surgery. Take care and don't overthink this.

  • Im 26, had an abdominql scan yesterday and they've accidentally found a 4cm lump on my left kidney. The sonographer said she reckons it's AML. The doctor called my on the same day to say they need to refer me for further tests just in case but he also reckons it's AML, very reassuring, he told me it's probably nothing serious and not to lose my sleep over it. I've got hospital appt next week, one stop clinic ? What made me worry so much is the fact it's all happening so quick, results on the same day, appt next week. Is it a normal procedure ? I've got symptoms, no pain. The sonographer also said I've probably had it for a loong time and it's probably nothing to worry about. Would my GP tell me if he was suspecting something serious ?? I've become really anxious since I've had my baby 11 months ago. (And I've googled it too )
