colonoscopy pain

i had a colonoscopy on 6th october 2018 it was really painful and the consultant didnt care i was screaming for him to stop and all he said was that it was taking him too long with all my screaming, he eventually aborted the procedure and used a smaller camera which was a little better but not much. he didnt go right to the end of my colon and was very dismissive about my trauma.I felt very let down as nothing was explained to me at all, only that as far as he could see there was no cancer, so what were the lesions on my colon that were seen on a ct scan. I will be reporting this as soon as i can. and by the way NO the sedation didnt work.

  • I had sedation as the surgeon refused to do it without and it was still horrendous. The camera wouldn't pass an area and the doctor kept moving me around and pushing to get it up and then he chastised me as my bowel wasn't fully clear despite me following the instructions as best as I understood so he gave up without seeing my upper tract. I'm sure it's fine though. 2 years down the line and there's nowt but IBS symptoms to worry about.

I had gas and air only for both my labours and I can tell you that it's better than nothing but if you can barely tolerate a colonoscopy I wouldn't recommend getting pregnant   -- honestly though. For pain I'd rank colonoscopy above recovering from an oophorectomy but below labour and root canal. Labour is waaaaay out in front of it all but you get endorphins at the end which I wish I could get on prescription.

  • I had the strongest pain relief they can give...Fentanyl...It has 5,000 times the potency of heroin and 10,000 times the potency of morphine....but i was still in so much pain. No one has been able to explain this to me

  • Hi I’m booked for a colonoscopy in the two weeks waiting period. I’m really scared of having one but I guess if I don’t have it I will never know what’s wrong with me. I’m passing blood all the time I need toilet. I thought I had internal piles but the doctor I saw said she couldn’t feel any so I wonder where the fresh blood is coming from I’m really worried and I don’t really want this colonoscopy  the prep and all that sounds horrid. I feel I can feel a sensation of something up my bottom and bleeds fresh blood. My fit test came back positive so it’s all ruining my life at the moment with feeling preasute in my backside. My thought go out to all of you on here

  • I had a colonoscopy on Monday the 20th of this week.   Oh my goodness, how I can relate, I was in agony, particularly on my left side. I could feel the tube as he was pushing it, upper left side.  The sedation is an absolute waste of space, I was fully awake throughout.  I'm not sure if it's down to the Doctor who is performing the procedure, he was rough. The last one I had, back in 2023 was bad enough, but this was worse.

  • It does make you wonder about the sedation ,I've had it twice now and if they hadn't told me I was sedated I wouldn't have known ,like yourself I was wide awake watched everything that was going on ,answered questions etc ,makes you wonder .

  • Jules2025 my colonoscopy I had two weeks ago was horrid I felt violated it was the worst experience of my life never again I had it with nothing I just let them get on with it  I had 8 biopsies it was torture iwould rather be in labour than that again. And after all that I got bad news I have a abnormal large growth in my rectum so CT scan next week  the person I had doing my colonoscopy was a nurse training not a doctor which I thought I was having boy it was painful and then kept filling me up with gas. I felt I had a red hot poker up my bottom

  • Hi there. I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad experience too.  When you say you had a training nurse for your procedure, same, he was a training Doctor, there was another Doctor there (much older) giving him orders.  I felt he was inexperienced; prodding around unnecessarily, all the time instructed.  They also took biopsies, 15 of them, apparently i'm extremely inflamed.   But thank goodness they didn't find any cancer, it was a cancer surveillance colonoscopy, the last time I had one they found a tumour, which has been operated on.  The whole experience sent my anxiety and stress levels through the ceiling, I didn't feel any pressure in my bottom, my pain was on the left hand side, my god, it was awful.  The sedation, they are having a laugh, I've got stronger co codamol tablets.  Good luck with your results.

  • Jules2025 hi this person I had doing the colonoscopy was a nurse doing training in colonoscopy’s this just seemed to be a added field she was in and not a proper doctor doing it  there was two other people in the room a carer and a male nurse  I was led to believe I was having a proper doctor in that specialty  there was even his name on my email who was going to do it. But it wasn’t him this was a female  don’t get me wrong she was nice and polite  but all I can say the whole experience was horrid and they was talking to each other over me and I could tell they found some thing by the way they was talking  all I said while played there was have I got cancer  and she said you have a large growth there  so now I’m waiting for the biopsies to come back  and my CT scan is next Thursday. Xx

  • That's all i'm hearing is nightmare experiences, it petrifies you for any future procedures.  Saying they are waiting for biopsies, is perhaps a good thing.  They usually know, they  told me then and there, the lead Consultant took me into his office, 15 minutes after the colonoscopy and told me I had a cancer tumour 5cm, and that I would be seen by a surgeon in two weeks, and insisted that I phone my spouse, but I refused to have him in the consulting room.  Again, good luck, let me know. x

  • That must have been terrifying Jules because I've had 2 Colonoscopies and I know they have to tell you if they see cancer ,luckily on both occasions its been something else for me ,but had they took me into a room like that I would have passed out ,my heart goes out to you and anybody else going through this its not nice at all , I sincerely hope things work out well for you .
