Thyroid nodule...inconclusive biopsy and possible surgery

Hi Everyone,

I went to the doctors with a pulled neck muscle around 3 months ago and whilst she was examining me she found 2 swollen lymph nodes which she wanted checking out so I was referred for an ultra sound scan. Whilst having my scan they found a small nodule on my thyroid but was reassured that it looked fine but he would be mentioning it on my report. I was then referred to ent by my gp and the consultant there had a good look at my throat etc and seemed unconcerned but wanted the thyroid consultant to look at it. When I got to the thyroid consultant he seemed very concerned  and told me the nodule looked “abnormal” and was sent straight for a biopsy! After a a scary 2 weeks my results have come back as inconclusive and I have been given the option of another biopsy or to have it removed. Forgot to mention that my thyroid is also slightly over active and I have an appt with endricology in Nov.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? My anxiety is through the roof

  • The waiting is just awful! It's taken 9 months for me to get to this point. I've tried to keep myself busy these last few weeks to take my mind off it and it's helped, I have my good days and my bad days. It's the not knowing that I can't cope with, once I know what it is I'll feel better and deal with it!

Hope you get some answers soon!

  • Hi I found a small lump on my right side of thyroid got biopsies day of the ultrasound and was told they could only tell it was a follicular lump but inconclusive about cancer, but I was told by the radio waves it was giving of it looked like it could be cancer, I was so scared when they said I'd have to have half my thyroid taken away, anyway 4 weeks ago I had it done and wasn't to bad, but I have a follow up appointment this Friday to get my results I gather, if it is cancer will they have to remove the other half or will it be ok as they took the bad half out it was only seemingly 1 and a half cm, the nodule, can any one help me that's being in the same situation please,

  • Have you had your results yet Emma? X

  • Hi Fran

Yes I have had my results and it was benign! I cannot tell you the relief! I see my consultant again today and I'm hoping I'll be discharged. I'm sending positive vibes and bigs hugs to anyone else going through their journey.

    Best wishes

  • I’m not sure what this is but I will give it a shot if someone can help me plz....I’ve had to have blood tests every 3 months for my thyroid glands and always been borderline until the last one it has shot straight up to number 9...I was referred to hospital to have a scan where they found a nodule and now got to go to the ENT but I’m a little panicky can anyone help thanks x

  • Hi,

From my Google searches (which I regret doing caus it makes u think u have symptoms when u don't), USUALLY that is indicative of something benign. 95% of nodules are benign. Have u had any symptoms?- palpitations, weight loss, anxiety, change in bowels, sweating, anxiety.

There is a small chance it may not be benign but even if that were the case, thyroid cancer is generally very treatable. I myself had a cancerous nodule but it was localised and slow growing. I know it's easy saying it but try not to jump to worst case scenario.

Hope this helps. Any more questions post on this.

  • I’ve been sweaty and keep waking up in the night very tired all the time with no energy anxiety so yes most symptoms

  • I'm no doctor, but it sounds like typical hyperthyroidism symptoms, which I think works in your favour (usually benign). Blood tests alone don't conclusively determine whether it's benign or malignant. In my case, my bloods were "normal" and I had cancer. Seemingly bloods are usually "normal" in thyroid cancer cases.

Have u had any hoarseness or pain in neck?

Once they find a nodule they have to check it out to see whether its benign or not so they can take it out or monitor it. The results should be back quick from it - it should give some indication of what they think it is.

  • IT is scary i got to have ultrasoubd next week can i ask do you feel like you choke and hard to take breaths in i hope all goes ok yes im getting panic atracks too bless you x

  • Not for an ultrasound. U will notice slight pressure for ultrasound when they hold the equipment against your neck but shouldnt be choking feeling or hard to breathe.
