Thyroid nodule...inconclusive biopsy and possible surgery

Hi Everyone,

I went to the doctors with a pulled neck muscle around 3 months ago and whilst she was examining me she found 2 swollen lymph nodes which she wanted checking out so I was referred for an ultra sound scan. Whilst having my scan they found a small nodule on my thyroid but was reassured that it looked fine but he would be mentioning it on my report. I was then referred to ent by my gp and the consultant there had a good look at my throat etc and seemed unconcerned but wanted the thyroid consultant to look at it. When I got to the thyroid consultant he seemed very concerned  and told me the nodule looked “abnormal” and was sent straight for a biopsy! After a a scary 2 weeks my results have come back as inconclusive and I have been given the option of another biopsy or to have it removed. Forgot to mention that my thyroid is also slightly over active and I have an appt with endricology in Nov.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? My anxiety is through the roof

  • Hi Emma,

I am in a very similar position at the moment however I am waiting for my biopsy results to come back. I had the biopsy done last Monday along with a CT scan. Having spoken to my consultants secretary, she’s advised that my CT results are back however the biopsy results are still with the lab (even though my radiologist at the time told me they’d be back within 4 days). They won’t tell me my CT results until I get my biopsy back so the consultant can paint a full picture which is understandable.

I have lumps on both sides of my thyroid, the right coming in at 4mm. My consultant has told me he’s pretty certain I’ll need surgery in the near future but I’m not sure if they’ll remove the whole thyroid or not yet.

I have been told that it could be thyroid cancer from one doctor and the next isn’t so sure - so I’m really unsure what I am supposed to think - just trying to stay positive and block it out but I still haven’t got a results appointment booked which is frustrating!! I was told I must cancel a two week holiday for these tests and it’s been 8 weeks since my initial two week urgent referral.

I feel frustrated for you that after a long two week wait your results have come back as inconclusive and you’re now having to weigh up the pros and cons of having surgery or opting for another biopsy. Hopefully you’ll figure it out and stay positive (easier said than done - I know!)

  • Hi, i had a large nodule last year and my results came back as negative however due to the size I had half of my thyroid removed (it was approx 5cm but the operation was optional). Once removed over a year later they sent it to histology and today I was officially told that I have cancer. However it’s the best of bad news as the one I have is the most common which is easily and quickly curable and it is contained. Looks like I’ll need the remainder of my thyroid removed and possible radiaiodine treatment but this is being confirmed tomorrow when I go back.

Im always available if you want to message me with any questions. It appears the waiting for results is the worst! I had to wait a month! X

  • Yes I was extremely relieved when I found out the news, and if you do have to have the operation as a precaution (even if it comes back non cancerous) then it’s really not bad at all x

  • Thank you for your replies...

I’m so anxious about the whole thing. I’m now waiting to hear back from the nurse so she can explain what the inconclusive result actually means as I have no idea.

RLJ0304 I hope you get your results soon

  • Hey Emma ! I called ENT today and they’ve told me my appointment has been requested but I still don’t have a date. Apparently it’s a “6 week follow up” from the date of my scan and biopsy so I may have to wait a month as well... the consultants secretary is back in on Monday so I’ll chase up then, wish they could say something over the phone! My biopsy could well be with the lab still...!

Have you heard from the nurse yet? I can’t imagine how you must be feeling now but I’m always hear to chat to if you want too! Xxx

  • Hi!

6 weeks is a long time to worrying about your results! Hopefully if you speak to them on Monday they might be able to push it forward! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!

My nurse called on Friday and explained my inconclusive results in plain English and I’ve decided to go ahead and have surgery. Just waiting for an appt now to see my consultant.

    Again thanks for the reply

    Take care

  • Hey Emma! How are things? I have my results appointment at the beginning of next week! 3 weeks after my initial biopsy and CT scan so thankfully I’m not waiting much longer; will keep you updated! Xx

  • Hi , I’m looking for advice . I had a double biopsy on my thyroid 27 th August . Nodules on both sides . I went back for my results 17 th September  and was told the nodule on right was benign ( relief) but the ones on left were inconclusive . Now I’ve waited for the last 6 and a 1/2 weeks to see what they propose doing . They were having a meeting to decide , which I wasn’t asked to attend . My doctor says I should have operation as something def wrong with nodules on left , also my sister had her thyroid removed 6 months ago for cancer . What should I do

  • Hi, do you have a consultant you can contact? 6 weeks seems a long time for results! I’d be chasing every day. Don’t be shy or embarrassed to do so. I think if it came back as cancerous then you should have had it removed by now and at least a plan of action in place.

  • Hi,

I have just had a lobectomy on the left of my thyroid over a week ago for papillary carcinoma. Size estimated to be around 3.4cm, which will be confirmed by pathology.

The nodule was found by chance during a routine  visit (was having  my bloods checked by my gp the end of March). Reason I went to gp was I had been told I got thin in the face and pale looking. The nodule felt solid and could be seen when I swallowed by my gp. I had no symptoms and was healthy up until this. Bloods were all ok (including thyroid function).

Gp referred me for an ultrasound which was conducted in early/mid April which showed one nodule on the left lobe. Early may I got a cancellation spot for a consult with endocrinologist who examines nodule, reflexes and listed symptoms to see if I had any (which I didn't). He took a blood sample and ecg (all were ok), said it could be benign but will do a biopsy to make sure.

Longest wait ever to get my biopsy. In mid August I had my FNA biopsy which was not as bad as I thought i'td be. Results from it took around 6 days -papillary carcinoma was the diagnosis. I then got referred to the endocrinologist in mid September (same one I saw in May) who referred me to an endocrine surgeon for a consult. Surgeon told me plan to remove left lobe as nodule was <4cm. Said I shouldn't need treatment. Consult with surgeon was end of September who gave me surgery date for Oct 24th.

Had pre op assessment which involved having bloods, bp, health questionnaire/medical history, ecg and vocal cord check which was ok. 9 days over op and doing quite good. Voice slightly hoarse but that should pass, can eat ok, have to be careful with neck movements (was hard to get comfy in bed first few days after), didn't need much pain relief at all (some after op through canula and 2 panadol night after op). They measure BP after it and had me on iv. Took bloods next am which were ok for calcium (that was my ticket home the next day). Wound healing good so far. Have apt with surgeon nov 22nd to check progress. Hope this helps someone who is in similar situation.

  • Hi I found a small lump on my right side of thyroid got biopsies day of the ultrasound and was told they could only tell it was a follicular lump but inconclusive about cancer, but I was told by the radio waves it was giving of it looked like it could be cancer, I was so scared when they said I'd have to have half my thyroid taken away, anyway 4 weeks ago I had it done and wasn't to bad, but I have a follow up appointment this Friday to get my results I gather, if it is cancer will they have to remove the other half or will it be ok as they took the bad half out it was only seemingly 1 and a half cm, the nodule, can any one help me that's being in the same situation please,

  • Have you had your results yet Emma? X

  • Hi Fran

Yes I have had my results and it was benign! I cannot tell you the relief! I see my consultant again today and I'm hoping I'll be discharged. I'm sending positive vibes and bigs hugs to anyone else going through their journey.

    Best wishes

    Emma xx

  • I’m not sure what this is but I will give it a shot if someone can help me plz....I’ve had to have blood tests every 3 months for my thyroid glands and always been borderline until the last one it has shot straight up to number 9...I was referred to hospital to have a scan where they found a nodule and now got to go to the ENT but I’m a little panicky can anyone help thanks x

  • Hi,

From my Google searches (which I regret doing caus it makes u think u have symptoms when u don't), USUALLY that is indicative of something benign. 95% of nodules are benign. Have u had any symptoms?- palpitations, weight loss, anxiety, change in bowels, sweating, anxiety.

There is a small chance it may not be benign but even if that were the case, thyroid cancer is generally very treatable. I myself had a cancerous nodule but it was localised and slow growing. I know it's easy saying it but try not to jump to worst case scenario.

Hope this helps. Any more questions post on this.

  • I’ve been sweaty and keep waking up in the night very tired all the time with no energy anxiety so yes most symptoms

  • I'm no doctor, but it sounds like typical hyperthyroidism symptoms, which I think works in your favour (usually benign). Blood tests alone don't conclusively determine whether it's benign or malignant. In my case, my bloods were "normal" and I had cancer. Seemingly bloods are usually "normal" in thyroid cancer cases.

Have u had any hoarseness or pain in neck?

Once they find a nodule they have to check it out to see whether its benign or not so they can take it out or monitor it. The results should be back quick from it - it should give some indication of what they think it is.
